Quick Movie Review
It's What's Inside has an interesting premise that would have been more impactful if we had a proper backstory on all the characters. Because when the plot takes a turn, you won't find yourself as invested and find yourself confused, rather than find the entire situation humorous or creepy or whatever the filmmakers wanted us to feel when we watch this movie.
Nevertheless, the ending has some redeeming qualities, so at least there's that.
IT'S WHAT'S INSIDE Movie Plot
Reuben and Sophia are getting married, and so before that, the friends gather for a get-together.
The focus is more on Cyrus and Shelby, who have been together for a long time but are not even engaged. On top of everything, Shelby is frustrated because Cyrus isn't as interested in her and insists she wears a blonde wig.
The friends meet up at the house and are so happy to see each other. Reuben reveals he also invited Forbes.
The others are weirded out by it, considering how they left things with Forbes.
Dennis and Forbes had gotten into a fight at a party, and things had come to a blow. The friends had sided with Dennis when the school authorities had intervened, but the reason Forbes was expelled was because he had brought his underage sister Beatrice to a drinking party.
The friends are all gathered at the table and talking. Reuben keeps staring at his ex Maya. Nikki is an influencer, and Brooke is addicted to social media.
There's not much to differentiate between personalities, which is why when the twist comes along, it doesn't leave you as shocked.
Anyway, Forbes enters with a large suitcase. The friends are curious about what he has been up to, and he fumbles through to explain that he has been in tech and that he and his colleagues have been working on an invention for five years.
He tells them that since he was always known as the Game Boy, he brought a game with him.
It is when he opens the suitcase and removes the electrodes that everyone gets apprehensive. Forbes manages to convince them to try it out, and they all place electrodes on their temples.
At the first jolt, everyone gets out-of-body experience. When Forbes switches it off, he explains that the game can help them switch bodies.
There is much discussion about whether or not to take a risk playing the game. Shelby definitely doesn't want to play it, but Cyrus manages to convince her and encourages her to have fun.
Forbes has brought a Polaroid camera and takes everyone's picture. He says whoever manages to guess the right friend gets a photo pinned on them.
The game begins, and everyone is transferred to another friend's body.
This is also when we must take out our notebooks and figure out just what is happening.
At this point, the friends are simply having fun, and there's not much going on except Cyrus is thought to be Dennis' body. Except, Cyrus is in Ruben's body and wonders why "Dennis" is lying. Forbes is the one in Dennis's body.
The real Cyrus asks real Forbes what is going on, and Forbes replies that he just wants Cyrus to have fun.
Maya, who still likes Reuben, is in Nikki's body. She flirts with Reuben, who is actually Cyrus.
Maya pops in, and the two stop making out. Who is in Maya's body? Who knows.
The round ends, and when everyone returns into their bodies. Cyrus is freaked out about Forbes' lying and tries to convince Shelby not to play the game. But now Shelby is having too much fun and wants to go again.
Cyrus reveals that Forbes lied about him being in someone else's body. Shelby still doesn't care.
Cyrus comes up with the idea to rub their eyebrows as a signal so that at least they both know whose body they jumped into. Shelby agrees.
When the second round begins, Cyrus is in Forbes' body. He rubs his forehead, but none of the girls return the gesture.
Cyrus keeps trying to talk to the others and guess which one is Shelby. Eventually, he hears Nikki scream, and Cyrus guesses that it is Shelby inside her because she has the "spider scream."
Nikki says that yes, she is Shelby but didn't reveal it to him because she wanted to have fun.
Shelby seduces Cyrus/Forbes and tells him that now she doesn't have to wear a blonde wig anymore because Nikki has blonde hair already.
The two start making out.
Elsewhere, Reuben, who is in Dennis's body, and Brooke, who is in Maya's body, start talking. Reuben/Dennis takes Brooke/Maya to the balcony where they begin to make out. Reuben is just attracted to Maya's body and so acts upon it. As they begin getting more intimate, Brooke reveals her true identity, as does Reuben. But since they are so into it, they don't care they are hooking up.
The force of their intimacy causes the balcony railing to break, and the two fall to their deaths.
Everyone rushes outside and is shocked by what they see. Now that Dennis and Maya's bodies are gone, the real Dennis and Maya no longer have a body to return to.
Everyone begins to fight. Forbes, who is in Reuben's body, begins to run with the machine. The others catch him.
Dennis, who is in Cyrus' body, checks his phone and sees his bank account has been drained.
Everyone begins to fight with everyone until Shelby/Nikki gets Cyrus/Forbes to come up with a plan. She proposes that they both run away together and since he always liked blondes, she remain in Nikki's body.
Forbes agrees because he probably always had a crush on Nikki.
Since Shelby is also the only one who knows how to operate the machine, she takes control of it.
Dennis/Cyrus calls the police because he thinks his friends stole from them.
Everyone eventually agrees to use the machine just as the police burst open the doors.
IT'S WHAT'S INSIDE Ending Explained
We then come to the final part and see Beatrice riding in her car. She already has a black eye and gets into a fight with another fight with a woman driver.
We see her with further scratches on her face. When she reaches the wedding venue, the bride is crying, the police are roaming about, and Forbes is the only one seen sitting on a chair.
As soon as Beatrice sees him, she goes up to him and punches him.
Forbes is revealed to be Dennis, who looks confused before he recognizes Beatrice as Forbes' sister.
But here comes the twist. It's not Beatrice, but the real Forbes in his sister's body.
After Beatrice was sent to the mental hospital following the incident at the birthday party, she vowed revenge on the friends. Forbes, who has invented the machine, thought he would be helping his sister by exchanging bodies with her. However, she knocked him out and ran away from the mental hospital.
Dennis/Forbes reveals that Beatrice is now in Nikki's body, and since she drained Dennis's account, she is rich as well.
Elsewhere, Cyrus is in prison because Dennis, when he was in Cyrus' body, confessed to killing Dennis and Maya. Shelby is not going to help him because she is pissed that he agreed to running away with her when she was in Nikki's body. She feels he never really loved her, and so she will not be helping him.
The movie ends.
And finally, so does the confusion.
Final Thoughts About The Movie
The trouble with the ending is that it could have been a funny and triumphant moment, except everything is still so confusing regarding who is in who's body, that it is impossible to concentrate on the remaining story.
Nevertheless, it's an interesting premise even if it needed a lot of clarity.
