Obsession by Curry Barker: A Twister Horror Tale of Love and Supernatural

 

It’s never a bad idea to get into horror, and as we’ve seen recently, sometimes it is those with a great sense of humor who create the creepiest horror movies. 

Curry Barker has made his name in comedy, but last year’s YouTube horror hit MILK & SERIAL proves that he can just as well deliver unhinged horror masterpieces. 

Barker’s newest release, OBSESSION, is unlike his previous work. For one, this isn’t a found footage movie. And secondly, Curry Barker does not act in this movie. His long-time collaborator Cooper Tomlinson, however, does make an appearance and, as per reports, does not play the main character but does feature in the pivotal part of the movie. 

The story is about a young man called Bear who works at a music store. He has a crush on a young woman called Nikki, who easily friend-zones him. When Bear comes across a toy from the 1960s, a One Wish Willow, he is told that any one of his wishes will be granted. 

Bear does try to get Nikki to like him back, but when it fails, he ends up making a wish for her to love him. At first, Bear is ecstatic that his love is no longer one-sided. But Nikki doesn’t only like him, she’s obsessed with him to the point that she manages to trap him in his own house. 

Nikki’s behavior turns bizarre, and when she occasionally shows bursts of normalcy, Bear’s suspicions are proven right. The woman before him is only a shell of Nikki. Her soul is trapped in the toy. 

But will Bear let her become normal again, or will he continue on with this relationship? That forms the crux of the story and the true horror that comes with making wishes. 

If Bear does indeed continue his bizarre relationship with Nikki because he has desired her for so long, does it really make him morally fine? 

It will be interesting to see how this plot is executed. Will it be socially conscious or will it border on corruption? Let’s see when it releases. 

The plot does resemble the classic The Monkey’s Paw tale, wherein the owner makes three wishes, not realizing the dire circumstances he’s putting himself and his family into.
