Y2K-- My Take On The Movie With Spoilers!
Plot: A group of high school kids are having a party before the new millennium. But at midnight, they learn that the threat of Y2K is real.
My Thoughts About The Movie
Those who were there in 1999 will remember the looming threat of Y2K? The media had blown up over how there would be utterly chaos in the world because computers will not be able to understand the numbers 2000 and set back to 1900. Computers were thought not to be programmed to 2000, and since planes and all other programs were computerised, the whole world was going to fall apart.
At midnight, there was a hint of anxiety as the clock struck, and the new day, new year, and new millennium had begun.
Nothing happened. The computers still worked, planes were still flying, and the world was safe. There were some minor hiccups, but the machines did not attack us.
24 years later, director and writer Kyle Mooney revives the threat and anxiety everyone felt when the year 2000 began.
While it is the era of instilling nostalgia into movies to draw audiences, a movie about Y2K could have been a lot better.
It lacks humour for one, and secondly, it would have worked better as a short.
Quick Movie Review
The movie starts off well, but then after the first act, it falls flat. It seems like the director was desperately trying to stretch the premise, and it goes nowhere. The characters are not likeable enough, and you'll find yourself waiting for the movie to get over.
Y2K is best explained as an elongated SNL sketch that tests your patience.
Where performances are concerned, Rachel Zegler overacts, Jaeden Martell probably does a decent job as a timid high schooler, and Julian Dennison acts as the only saving grace in the movie Unfortunately, his role is cut short prematurely.
Y2K Movie Plot
The movie begins with Eli chatting on AIM with his best friend Danny and his crush Laura.
Remember the good old days when we used to chat with just about anyone online? Nowadays, we have several security features in place so that we can be selective with who we want to connect with.
Anyway, Laura is showing off her computer skills and makes Eli laugh with a video.
Eli goes to see Danny and meets with his mother, who thinks of Eli as his own.
Eli and Danny are planning to hang out together and stay in during New Year's Eve.
They get a video from a store and meet with their friend Garrett.
While they are getting snacks at a store, Laura and her friends come in. Eli goes to make awkward conversations with her while she reveals that she and he friends are going to steal liquor.
The friends grab beer cans and bottles and run out without paying. Eli and Danny follow. Laura invites him to a New Year's party. Soccer Chris is throwing.
Danny encourages Eli to go so that he can have his midnight kiss with her.
They also run into a bully called Farkas and his friends, which also include Ash, who likes to film everyone with a video camera.
Later, Danny and Eli go to the party, and Danny easily makes a good impression with his cool dance moves. Girls flock to him, and he shares stories about how he pranked Eli once by peeing into his soda.
Eli is humiliated and feels left out while Danny becomes extremely popular.
He finds and talks to Laura, but his efforts to flirt with her are thwarted by Soccer Chris, who wants to make a move on Laura himself.
Midnight strikes, and everyone is kissing except for Eli. He watches Laura kiss Chris and is heartbroken.
That's when everyone hears a scream. They all rush upstairs to the bedroom. There was a couple making out, and when everyone opened the door, they found the guy with part of a fan blade stuck on his head. The girl claims that the electric bed threw him up.
Eli notices a remote control car coming up behind everyone. The car suddenly produces a lighter and hairspray, then aims it at a guy, burning his head.
All the electronics go berserk and attacking people. A blender shreds someone's groin, and videotapes are thrown at people's heads. Even a Tamagotchi becomes sentient and attacks people.
The deaths are bizarre, and Rachel Zegler gives an over the top reaction to everything.
The sequence could have been comical or shocking. Instead, it doesn't make much sense because it doesn't explain why kitchen gadgets would be attacking people.
Anyway, the survivors rush out. Danny stands up to Farkas, and Eli makes a weak comment in the end.
Danny is attacked from behind by a robot made up of different gadgets. Laura thinks she can hack computers, but for that, they need to go to her ex-boyfriend Jonas' place.
Eli isn't too happy about that, but off they go. Farkas tries to skateboard on a fallen street lamp but falls and hits his head. He dies.
No one is bothered about the deaths and rush to save themselves.
They manage to get to Jonas' hideout where Garret is also present. He asks Eli where Danny is, and Eli responds with a glum face that is immediately understood.
Eli's computer is found, and Laura tries to hack into it so that the other electronics can also behave or be shut down. Instead, they come across a lot of Eli's personal stuff, which embarrasses him.
Laura is trying to use this computer to connect with the other evil ones, but this one turns evil too and throttles Laura. She is saved when some water is thrown on it.
The group is attacked by the same robot in Chris' house. There are more deaths, and Laura and Eli have an almost kiss.
The survivors make it to the video store where they meet Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, who is feeling down in the dumps. He is uplifted and asked to join them.
They all head to the school where the parents and everyone else are gathered so that they can hide.
Fred Durst performs, and Eli meets with Danny's mother and offers condolences. Eli then gives a rousing speech to everyone but ends it badly, making everyone feel embarrassed for him.
Y2K Ending Explained
Is the movie over yet? Almost.
Eli and Laura find the bug's mainframe. Laura tries to use her hacking skills, but the bug tries to electrocute everyone. Eli uses the contraceptive Danny gave him to put it on the kill code and shut everything down.
The threat is finally over. Eli and Laura finally get together.
Time passes, and everyone is graduating. Eli leaves figurines of the 70s show at Danny's grave. It was always their "thing."
While they are leaving, Ash's iPod glitches, and the threat of the bug looms again.
The movie ends.
Y2K was a hard movie to get through. It completely misses the chance to he actually funny and use the theme effectively.
It turned out to be boring and difficult to get through.
The actors deserved a better project than this.
