Heart Eyes--My Take On the Movie With Spoilers!
Plot: Every Valentine's Day, a serial killer targets romantic couples. This year, Ally and Jay may just be able to stop him.
Quick Movie Review
Valentine's Day is supposed to be a day for romance and gifts to show your partner that you care for them.
It's also a day for certain people to be so sick of the repulsive public display of affection, and in horror movies, especially a day when a serial killer is let loose.
Heart Eyes is a strictly okay horror comedy. There's nothing memorable in the movie, but you will have some fun watching it.
The movie has a lot of ingredients thrown in that can seem messy at times. There's a meet-cute, a gory killing, a perfunctory chase, and a twist reveal. Most importantly, while the actors do a good job, the main couple, Ally (Olivia Holt) and Jay (Mason Gooding), lack chemistry. You may care about them individually in the movie, but together, they're just "meh!"
Anyway, here's what happened in Heart Eyes.
HEART EYES Movie Plot Summary
The movie opens with a couple, Patrick and Adeline, standing in a romantic setting.
Patrick proposes to Adeline after being directed by her. He then calls a photographer he hired, Nico, about whether he managed to get a good shot. When Nico replies in the negative, Patrick takes back the ring and proposes to Adeline again. Unknown to them, as Nico begins to take a photo, someone plunges a knife straight through the lens and into his eye.
After the (re)proposal, Patrick is checking up with Nico when someone shoots an arrow at his head. The arrow has a heart at the end of it.
Adeline freaks out and runs right into a wine making facility to hide. The serial killer who is wearing a mask follows her inside and kills the security guard.
Of all the places, Adeline hides in the grape crusher and clamps a hand over her mouth so the serial killer doesn't hear her.
The serial killer finds her, and she manages to land a strike at his hand before closing the small window in the barrel.
The serial killer, clearly Heart Eyes, locks up the barrel, turns on the switches, and Adeline freaks again when she realizes that she is going to be crushed.
The machine crushes her, and her blood is squeezed out of her body and drips down to be collected by the machine.
Cut to news reports about the Heart Eyes serial killer who targets couples on Valentine's Day.
We then meet Ally, who is at a cafe with her friend Monica. Ally has just broken up with her boyfriend, and Monica is encouraging her to move on since her ex already has.
The barista announces a coffee order that sounds like it has more sugar in it than coffee. Ally goes to grab it, but a guy makes a grab for it, too.
Ally argues it's her order, but so does he. The batista informs them that Ally's order isn't that unique and tells both of them to move after giving them another glass of what is supposed to be coffee.
Monica gives a thumbs up to Ally as she moves to the side with the guy who introduces himself as Jay. He offers her a straw, but she removes her metal straw that she carries with her everywhere to be environmentally friendly.
As they are chatting, Ally drops something, and when they both try to grab it, butt heads. Jay gets a bleeding nose, and Ally gets embarrassed.
She rushes off to work. Monica offers a hurried explanation that Ally is nervous about being fired.
At work, Ally's presentation of a jewelry ad doesn't go well. She has portrayed doomed lovers in the ad, which has nothing to do with jewelry. Worse, it is coming at a time when the Heart Eyes killer is on the loose.
Her boss announces that she has recruited someone else for damage control. In walks Jay. Ally is mortified as she is sure Jay is about to take her job. However, he wants to work with her on the ad and invite her to dinner. Ally tries to discourage him, but he doesn't take no for an answer.
Monica tells Ally that since he invited her on Valentine's Day, she may as well consider it a date. Ally
is too cynical after being dumped, and so even when they go shopping for a new dress, she picks something that looks like a business suit.
At dinner, Ally is left waiting for Jay all alone while the servers look on at her with pity.
Elsewhere two detectives, Zeke Hobbs and Jeanine Shaw, are investigating the Murders and finding a wedding ring with initials J.S.
Spoiler alert: one of the detectives is Jeanine Shaw...J.S.
Anyway, the Heart Eyes killer claims two more victims at a spa where a couple was having a romantic massage.
Back at the restaurant, Jay finally arrives and indulges in small talk. Ally only wants to talk about work and makes a cynical comment, which makes Jay leave. She rubs after him to save her job but then sees someone behind him and suddenly grabs Jay and kisses him.
Jay is surprised but then realizes Ally kissed him to make her ex Collin jealous. Collin has just arrived with his new girlfriend, and Ally clumsily shows that she has moved on, too. She gets inside Jay's Uber, and they drive off together.
Ally is dropped off at her home first, and Jay notices that she is rummaging through her purse for her keys. Jay decides to help her break into her house. He covers his hand and punches through the glass, only to bleed out again.
Ally invites him inside and bandages his hand. She is embarrassed about the mess in her bedroom, especially a certain toy that is at her nightstand. She hides it behind her back and goes to her closet to throw it in, when she opens it and finds the Heart Eyes killer standing. She throws the toy at the killer, but it doesn't deter him.
Ally and Jay run out and call for the Uver driver, still waiting. A heart arrow strikes the driver's head.
Ally and Jay run to an amusement park and hide. The Heart Eyes Killer attacks them, and Jay climbs atop him, only to be fling down and knocked out.
Ally runs towards a carousel and, when the killer appears, manages to shove him off. He disappears when the police finally arrive.
As Ally is being tended to, she remarks about the detectives' names, Hobbs and Shaw, but they don't make the connection to the iconic characters.
They then announce that the Heart Eyes Killer has been caught. Ally sees Jay in the backseat and tries to explain that he's not the killer, but the detectives do not believe her.
Jay is pissed off at Ally because she abandoned him but she explains it was because the killer was chasing her. Jay doesn't care for her explanation.
Ally visits the police station to try to set things straight while Jay is interrogated by the detectives.
A guy walks past and says he recognizes her. He introduces himself as David, the IT guy at the station. Ally doesn't recognize him until he says he saw her on an app. He asks her out, but she explains she was just attacked by the serial killer tonight and isn't looking to date anyone. David walks away, and Ally is joined by a police officer who is convinced that the threat of Heart Eyes is over with Jay's arrest.
The lights go off, and Ally arms herself, certain that the Heart Eyes killer has arrived. The officer doesn't believe her. She does when she is killed by the Heart Eyes killer.
Ally runs around while the Heart Eyes killer attacks Shaw and kills him Hobbs.
Jay is still handcuffed to the table and freaking out. Ally finds the keys and uncuffs him.
Ally and Jay run out and manage to escape to a drive-in where a Valentine's Day special event is taking place. They realize they may have lured the Heart Eyes killer to an all you can kill buffet.
For some reason, this town has amusement parks and drive-ins within running distance.
Ally and Jay manage to hide in a van where a hippie couple is making out.
Jay and Ally reconnect but their heartwarming reunion is cut short when the couple makes too much noise and attracts the Heart Eyes killer who plunges a tire iron into the couple creating a hole big enough to see Ally and Jay in the front seat.
The two run out as Heart Eyes begins to slaughter couples whose romantic dates are cut short thanks to Ally and Jay bringing the killer to them.
Guilt-ridden, Ally decides to stay and fight back. Jay is willing to put his life at risk as well.
They distract the killer as he's killing someone and lure him to a spot where they lunge at him. The two manage to overpower Heart Eyes, and before he can hurt them, kill him.
Ally sees the blood and pukes all over the Heart Eyes killer. This confirms that she could have never been a nurse because she can't handle blood.
The masked killer turns out to be a stranger, therefore confirming the story isn't over yet. A serial killer is always someone the audience already knows, even if the characters don't.
Shaw arrives, and so do the medics. Jay says he has to catch a flight to his friend's wedding. Ally has grown feelings for him but doesn't want to seem too eager. Shaw drops Jay to the airport while Ally's blanket is taken away for another accident that has taken place.
Ally calls up Monica, revealing she has fallen for Jay. Her friend encourages her to run to the airport to stop him since that's what couples do in romance movies.
Ally goes all the way to the airport and is stopped by security for carrying an environmentally friendly metallic straw. They let her pass, but she can't find Jay.
Ally receives a call from the real killer who calls her to a chapel.
HEART EYES Ending Spoilers
Ally makes it to St.Valentines Chapel, where she finds Jay tied up and on his knees.
The killer reveals himself to be David, the IT guy who had just asked Ally out.
He is joined by Detetive Shaw, who is his accomplice. The two are a weird couple with a fetish for killing romantic couples.
They tell Ally that she wasn't the target until she decided to kiss Jay outside the restaurant. Their target was initially Ally's ex-boyfriend.
Ally is then given a choice to either kill herself or Jay. She picks up the gun and confesses to Jay that she has developed feelings for him. She shoots Jay through the shoulder so that it can hit Shaw.
Everyone gets into a fight for a while with a tied-up Jay managing to plunge an arrow into David's eye and let him fall on the lit candles. Shaw is pissed off and attacks Ally, who plunges the metal straw into her neck and then pushes her into St. Valentine's statue, decapitation her.
This time, Ally doesn't throw up after seeing the bloody mess.
David gets up, but Jay plunges another arrow into him.
Ally and Jay reunite.
A year later, Ally decides to return to medical school. She meets Jay at the drive-in, and he asks her to move in with him. Ally looks disappointed and instead surprises Jay by asking him to marry her.
Jay says yes.
Ally receives a phone call from Heart Eyes, but it is a prank by her friend Monica. The call then gets abruptly cut off.
Sequel?
The movie ends.
Final Thoughts About The Movie
Heart Eyes is gory and is funny in parts, but unfortunately, it isn't very memorable, probably due to the lack of chemistry between the protagonists.
Scare Scale: 3/5
