Flash Fiction: The Pier
In my dreams, I see her.
She is waiting at the pier, all hopeful and in love.
I am there to break her heart.
She weeps when I tell her we must part.
Her eyes are filled with longing and despair.
I cannot bring myself to care.
The next day, she was gone.
No one searched for her because I was the only one she had.
Years passed, and she faded in my memory.
I met someone else and went on to marry.
Another year passed, and I met her again in my dreams.
She stood at the pier once more.
She was unhappy that I had forgotten her.
I apologized to her for breaking her heart.
I was naive and young.
She doesn't take my apology.
Every night, she calls to me
Every morning, my sanity further slips away.
I begin to see her during the day.
She promises she will never leave me.
In desperation, I flee.
But she still chases me.
I abandon my family and friends.
But she still finds me in the darkest corners.
One day, I can take it no more.
I scream at her to leave me alone.
She smiles a cruel, hollow smile.
You're already alone, she tells me.
Just like she was when I left.
