The Dead Girl in Apartment 03-- My take on the movie with spoilers!
PLOT: After finding her roommate Elizabeth dead, Laura experiences a series of strange incidents that makes her realize that her life may be in danger.
Remember the 90s and early 2000 sitcoms where people who didn't know each other, came to live together in an apartment and within an episode became the best of friends? By the time the series finale rolls out, at least two of the friends are romantically involved and getting married.
Because of these shows, having a roommate sounds fun. Imagine having a friend for life? Imagine just hitting it off with them the very first time you meet them.
But reality can be disappointing, can it not?
Sometimes, in horror movies especially, people don't get along. To the point that they may not even realize that one of them is dead.
In this movie, which has a very long name, it takes Laura a days
to realize her roommate is dead.
The movie has a decent start, a bit messy middle and then although a clichéd climax, acceptable.
Fortunately, the movie is just a couple of minutes over an hour making it a decent watch with decent pacing.
THE DEAD GIRL IN APARTMENT 03 Movie Plot
Laura is in her room doing her work with headphones on when she hears a noise. She pulls out the headphones and hears a scratching sound. She calls out for her roommate Elizabeth but receives no reply.
Laura goes over to her room and opens the door. She screams.
In the next scene, two detectives are called. One of them, Detective Miller is being extra nice to Laura which makes his partner Detective Richards roll her eyes.
They question Laura about Elizabeth who they guess has been dead for a day or two. Laura is clearly not close to her roommate and the only information she can give out is that Elizabeth had a boyfriend called Derrick who is obsessed with her but in a good way.
Note how she still used the word obsessed.
The detectives are unable to determine what caused Elizabeth's death and assure Laura that they will fast track the autopsy.
Before leaving Detective Miller slips Laura his number.
Laura calls her mother and tells her about Elizabeth who is shocked to find that her daughter hasn't made as many friends as the sitcoms suggest. No matter how small a town a girl comes from, the people in the city find her endearing and want to be immediate friends. That hasn't happened to Laura and this is probably one of the realistic elements of the movie.
Laura has no place to go and the cleaning crew the detectives had recommended gave 24 hours service, aren't free until the next morning.
Laura argues that they were supposed to be open 24 hours but they assure her that she isn't the only person who requires a cleaning crew at this house. There are plenty of crime scenes all over the city.
Laura is still not bothered by the fact that the crime rate in her city is obviously so high she can't book a cleaning crew. She decides to get about cleaning the apartment herself.
But then she experiences a haunting and immediately calls her ex boyfriend Christian. He is having a guy's night out but still takes her call.
Christian puts on his best "You're not my girlfriend anymore so I don't have to bother about you" persona while Laura whines about him being terrible.
When she tells him about Elizabeth, Christian sighs and reminds her he's not her boyfriend any more, remember, and so he isn't obligated to be a decent human being to her and be there for her.
Laura roams about in Elizabeth's room and finds creepy clown dolls on a shelf. But that’s not all she comes across. A push of the bed and she notices a symbol drawn on the floor, something the police completely missed during the investigation.
There are some scenes where Detective Richards offers Detective Miller advice and recounts her own experience with getting involved with witnesses. But this is all pointless. We know the Detective is going to involve himself. The question is, will he survive after getting involved in something that is very clearly black magic?
Derrick pops by and mopes around the apartment. Laura calls the detectives who tell her to send him away if she is uncomfortable. Should he not leave, she should call them.
Luckily Derrick does leave and Laura goes about calling everyone including Christian who realizes he was being a jerk to her and decides he wants to help her.
Laura sends him photos of the symbols she found on the floor and he promises to help her.
Meanwhile, Laura fixes herself up after she calls the detective. It wouldn’t look nice to be shabby in front of guests.
When he comes over, she shows him the scratches on the door, another thing the police missed when they were investigating the room.
Just what were the police doing to have missed out so many clues? Luckily there's Laura.
The detectives then tell her that there was bo evidence of physical harm on Elizabeth's body but they haven't ruled out poison yet.
They leave.
Christian performs a basic search online and finds out what the symbols mean. Couldn’t Laura do it herself, you ask? It was the first result Christian clicked on.
Chances are the paranormal activity interfered with the wifi in Laura's apartment which is why she had to seek Christian's help.
THE DEAD GIRL IN APARTMENT 03 Ending Explained with movie spoilers
Christian is horrified to discover what the symbols mean and tells Laura he will be right over and that she is in danger. It is a long drive for him but he is willing to make it.
But just then Christian is attacked by something that looks from another world.
Laura calls the detective too but then she sees an intruder in the house wearing a cow skull. She is knocked out.
When she wakes up, she finds herself tied up and Derrick roaming about.
He explains how Elizabeth was shy but in love with him and so conducted a ritual to get him attracted to her. He knew this but rather than finding it creepy, he found it flattering.
The problem was that Elizabeth didn't take him seriously and so she was taken by the entity with whom she made a deal with.
Now the only way he can get Elizabeth back is if he sacrifices her and let Elizabeth's soul possess her.
He raises the knife and is shot instantly by the detective who reached in the nick of time.
Now we didn’t see Derrick perform a ritual but it somehow still worked and when the detective asks Laura if she is fine she answers that Laura isn't here.
In the next scene we see Christian being questioned. He wasn't killed for some reason by whatever thing that came into his apartment. It couldn't be Derrick, could it? He couldn't have made the drive. And if it was the entity that Elizabeth made a deal with, then it wasn't that evil. It didn't kill Christian, did it?
Christian claims to not know where his ex-girlfriend went nor what happened to the detective whose neck was slit from ear to ear.
We will never know what happened either.
Somewhere out there, Elizabeth is living in Laura's body without the man she loves for whom she had made a deal with the demon.
The movie with the long title finally ends.
In spite of its obvious flaws, The Dead Girl in Apartment 03 isn’t all that bad to watch and at least the first half packs enough mystery and thrills to keep your attention.
