Horror Movies of 2021

There have been plenty of horror movies to satisfy the palate of a horror movie fan this year. But not many movies impressed and some of the low budget movies were exceptional and enjoyable.  Here’s my list of favorite horror movies:

Miranda Veil-- Horror Movie Ending Spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: On her birthday, Miranda realizes she is unable to die. This she discovers when she is abducted by a serial killer.   What if you could live forever? Would you want to? And what if you're stuck in that one age for the rest of your life? How enticing is that idea to you? If you think about it, you could stay at that age where you're not too young nor too old. You are at the perfect age. Your mind will grow but the drawback of this curse or gift, however you see it, is that your loved ones will age. They will grow older, get diseases and perhaps you will have to watch them die. But you remain the same age forever. Now would you really want to live forever? Miranda Veil, is in all aspects a good movie. Not horror-wise as much, and most of the scenes border on comedy. What's interesting is the characterizations  that are unlike any you have seen in movies before. We have a girl called Miranda who is terrified, yet fascinated by her new gift. It is how she comes to

Creepy Urban Legends: BakeNeko-- The Monster Cat

Have you heard of the Bakeneko?

First Impressions: Scream (2022)

In 1996, the first Scream movie came out, quickly becoming a box office hit and reviving the slasher genre. It was supposed to be a satire movie, relying heavily on cliches. Scream quickly became a cult favorite with Ghostface, the villain wearing the white scream mask, becoming one of the popular costumes to don on Halloween.  Soon enough, sequels were announced, with only the fourth one performing disappointingly at the box office, while the third one generated more negative reviews.  Still, the hype of Scream lives on, and now twenty-six years after the first film was released, Scream (not Scream 5 as it was originally planned) would release on January 14th 2022.

The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made me do it---Horror Movie ending spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: When Arne murders his landlord, he claims he is possessed by a demon that escaped during an exorcism the Warrens performed.  The Conjuring is one of the most popular horror franchises. Based on the cases of Ed and Lorraine Warren, two popular paranormal investigators who worked on around 10,000 cases during their lifetime. While the Warren's have now passed away, their cases and stories are still remembered and adapted into movies? The reason their stories are still talked about today is that several sceptics over the years have posed a question on the authenticity of their cases. Did those hauntings really happen or were they an invention by the Warrens? But the Warrens did claim their investigations were thorough and they did look out for hoaxes, something that was partly covered in Conjuring 2 where the Warrens thought the family being haunted had staged it for fame. Of course, it turned out towards the end that the nefarious Nun, who is actually a demon calle

Book of the Week: The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman

Christopher Buehlman’s newest release THE BLACKTONGUE THIEF is the horror book of the week.  The book ranks number one in humorous fantasy and number two in horror fiction.  The plot is as follows (Taken from Amazon.com)   Set in a world of goblin wars, stag-sized battle ravens, and assassins who kill with deadly tattoos, Christopher Buehlman's The Blacktongue Thief begins a 'dazzling' (Robin Hobb) fantasy adventure unlike any other. Kinch Na Shannack owes the Takers Guild a small fortune for his education as a thief, which includes (but is not limited to) lock-picking, knife-fighting, wall-scaling, fall-breaking, lie-weaving, trap-making, plus a few small magics. His debt has driven him to lie in wait by the old forest road, planning to rob the next traveler that crosses his path. But today, Kinch Na Shannack has picked the wrong mark. Galva is a knight, a survivor of the brutal goblin wars, and handmaiden of the goddess of death. She is searching for her queen, missing si

A Classic Horror Story--My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: When Elisa travels with strangers in a bus that meets with an accident, she finds her life upturned when they are all stranded in a strange location.    If you look closely, you'll find many horror movies with a similar pattern. The popular ones are where a family moves into a haunted house, teens being on a serial killer's list, road trips going haywire when taking a wrong turn...there are probably a dozen more. These movies are made, we still watch them because sometimes they have a different twist or sometimes a favourite actor is playing a part or simply because they are entertaining. More often than not, filmmakers will try to merge two or three subgenres and try to make a "different" movie out of it. They barely work out in the end but we still give them a shot. As Horror fans how can we not try to watch a different movie every now and then?

THE LEGEND OF AMARA BOOK 1

Not every legend is about a hero.  Everyone at HarborOne City thought a little girl called Amara had saved their city from ferocious wolves all those years ago.  When high school student Kiara Someri loses a friend in a tragic incident, she learns the grim truth about Amara.  Amara was never the innocent girl everyone thought her to be. Koi Janne Na: Horror Movie ending spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: When Kabir's fictional character from his book, Zaran Khan, is blamed for all the murders in the city, Kabir must solve the mystery before he is the one put behind bars.  Roughly translated to 'Nobody Knows' this movie will have you ask questions like: Nobody knows why I'm watching this movie. Nobody knows why the writer decided to write such a convoluted tale. Nobody knows why the editor did such a shoddy job. Nobody knows why the actors decided to sign on for this movie. The list goes on...

Horror Book of the Week: The Sentence by Louise Erdrich

Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award-winning author Louise Erdrich’s latest release THE SENTENCE is book of the week!  Released in November 2021, this book is quickly climbing the list in Ghost Fiction and Horror.  The plot is as follows (Taken from Amazon.com) Louise Erdrich's latest novel, The Sentence, asks what we owe to the living, the dead, to the reader and to the book. A small independent bookstore in Minneapolis is haunted from November 2019 to November 2020 by the store's most annoying customer. Flora dies on All Souls' Day, but she simply won't leave the store. Tookie, who has landed a job selling books after years of incarceration that she survived by reading 'with murderous attention,' must solve the mystery of this haunting while at the same time trying to understand all that occurs in Minneapolis during a year of grief, astonishment, isolation and furious reckoning. The Sentence begins on All Souls' Day 2019 and ends on All Souls' Day 2

The Final Scream-- My take on the movie with spoilers!

Plot Summary: After numerous rejections, Kia thinks she's landed a big break in a movie only to discover the true horror of her new role.  We’ve all heard stories about aspiring actors who are sometimes exploited with promises of getting the “big break”. The entertainment industry seems all lights and glamour until you read these kinds of stories and are horrified. Hopefully, these casting couch incidents don’t happen anymore. THE FINAL SCREAM Movie Plot When the movie begins and you meet Kia Anderson being told by the director that she would have to take on an unpaid role that requires her to do nudity, you expect to see yet another story being told of exploitation.

1922: Horror Movie ending spoilers!

Plot Summary: A farmer conspires to kill his wife after she wants to sell the farm off and move to the city. But his actions have deadly consequences.  There's always that one year that holds meaning for us and it's not because something eventful happened every single day, but because something eventful happened one day of which the repercussions traversed through a couple of days or weeks. It then becomes known as the year of something bad happening. Good moments are rarely attributed a whole year and perhaps it is because those are little moments that last hardly for a day. Having a bad year becomes memorable. It is that one bad occurrence that shapes our future and our lives. The good days and moments are like consolation prizes for getting through the bad days which is why we think more about the bad days that keep going on and on. 1922 is a movie about such a year. Only the character in the movie brought upon his own bad days by the one single bad thing he did. 1922 Mov

Horror Book of the Week: King of Battle and Blood (Adrian X Isolde Book 1) by Scarlett St. Clair

Bestselling author Scarlett St. Clair’s new release King of Battle and Blood (Adrian X Isolde Book 1) is the book of this week.  Published by Bloom books, this dark fantasy horror book has already topped the lists on Amazon’s Bestsellers. It currently holds the number one spot in the Dark Fantasy bestsellers list.  The premise is as follows (taken from Amazon.com) Their union is his revenge. Chucky TV series Season One Recap

PLOT: In this coming of rage story, Jake, a teenager, picks up a Good Guy doll at a yard sale not realizing that the doll is possessed. The first season of Chucky has come to an end with a thrilling finale, complete with all the ingredients that make the Chucky series so popular. There are humorous dialogues, some old faces from the Chucky movies, a lot of stabbings, and a lot of Chucky. The series begins with the introduction of teenagers into the Chucky universe. There's Jake, who has an obsession with building sculptures made of doll heads that his father highly disapproves of. There's his cousin Junior who dislikes his cousin Jake because he thinks all the disharmony in his house is linked to him after Jake's father dies and Jake moves into the house. Blood Night: Legend of Mary Hatchet-- My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: A group of teenagers become a target of the local legend on the day Mary Hatchet's killing spree is celebrated.  Most movies have a tendency to show small towns as an ideal place to grow up in. The people are friendly, everyone knows your name, and everyone helps you when you are in need. It's a community that always comes together. In fact, the people are so desperate to gather and celebrate that in the case of Blood Night: Legend of Mary Hatchet , they are ready to celebrate a horrible murder because clearly, they have run out of things to celebrate.  It would have seemed more decent if they celebrated the weather rather than a horrible incident in which a girl kills her family in her sleep, is raped in the mental institution and gives birth to a dead baby. Mary, the girl's name, becomes even more unstable and goes on a rampage, killing practically the whole staff. The cops arrive just in time to shoot her several times.

Seance-- Horror Movie ending spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: When Camille enrols in Edelvine Academy, she is pulled into the mystery of the murdered girl whose place she took. Camille and the other girls have a seance to find the truth. As a kid, I always found it fun to either read ghost stories in the dark or have them be told to me. And by ghost stories, I meant the PG-rated ones that bordered more on comedy than actual scares. I didn't get to read the "real" horror stories until I was well into my teenage years. Even then, I liked to read and hear allegedly true ghosts stories and urban legends. But did I actually want to summon a ghost by using the various methods that were all the hype in those days? Nope. For the only reason that if I did want to summon someone, it wouldn't be because I want to be chased around and killed in my own home. I would want to summon a genie that would grant me wishes; no strings attached. But it seems that there are a couple of kids out there who think ghost summoning is an
