First Impressions: Shining Vale

There’s something charming about Shining Vale, and no it’s not only because of the lead characters, charming as they both are. The horror-comedy show premiered in the first week of March.  The story is about a couple, Patricia and Terry who move into a new house for a fresh start following a cheating incident. The couple has kids: a temperamental teenager Gaynor and awkward younger son Jake.  The show begins with a message informing viewers that depression and possession sometimes have the same symptoms.  We then see Patricia and Terry enter their new home, and a real estate agent who gives them a large friendly smile. Clearly, she’s hiding something.  It is then revealed that it was Patricia who cheated on Terry with the handyman following which the couple attended therapy. Patricia is a writer and has been struggling to put out the next book even though her agent keeps bugging her about it.  Patricia deals with kids who don’t respect her anymore, an impatient husband and a terr

Things Heard and Seen-- My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: Catherine has just moved into a new house with her family. Her husband is having an affair. He makes fun of her eating disorder. To top it all, she can sense a presence that seems to be warning her of danger.  How much do you really know a person? Staying under the same roof, eating your meals together, sleeping on the same bed...basically spending most of your time with that person. So imagine the shock when the person you thought you knew, was a liar. This is what forms the crux of the story of Things Heard & Seen.

Creepy Urban Legends: The Boo Hag

If you’re having trouble sleeping, if you manage to sleep and have nightmares, and if you wake up in the morning and feel exhausted, chances are that you have been visited by the Boo Hag.  “Don’t let the Boo Hag ride ya.”  That’s what you’ll often hear from people in South Carolina who will attach this expression with the common “good night”. Saying this after good night is supposed to ward off the mythical creature known as Boo Hag.  So what kind of creature is the Boo Hag?

The Sleepless Unrest: The Real Conjuring Home (2021)--My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: A group of investigators make a documentary on the infamous Conjuring House. They soon encounter something sinister in the house.   Haunted houses have always been a topic of speculation. Do they really exist? Are the hauntings real? Or is it just the pipes? Or maybe the change in temperature is what causes wood to expand and contract, thus making a creaking sound. The Conjuring was one of the creepiest haunted house stories because it was loosely based on true events. The Perrons, who lived there, experienced haunting from an angry spirit they believe was called Bathsheba. Ed and Lorraine Warren were called to investigate and they offered help.

The 8th Night-- My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: A monk is tasked with a mission to protect the world from an evil spirit that keeps jumping from one host to another.  Can evil truly be destroyed?  Ever since we were kids, we've read stories about monsters and people with wrong intentions and beastly characters. In the end, they were always, ALWAYS, defeated. That is what gave us hope and let us sleep at night knowing that if there was any danger from anything unholy and bad, the "GOOD" will come and defeat it.  Then we grow up, become more aware of the world and realize those stories were mere fairytales.  Evil is never destroyed. It can be subdued but can it really be defeated and destructed completely?

Creepy Urban Legends: Pontianak

According to a popular myth, a Pontianak or Kuntilanak, is a vampiric being that feeds on men by ripping apart their bodies and organs. She often disguises herself as a young, beautiful woman and lures men just so she can feed on them.  There are plenty of stories surrounding the legend of this vampire creature and so of course, I wrote one too.  You can check it out here on YouTube:     This one is a little scary so be warned...
