PLOT SUMMARY: After finally getting pregnant, Lucy learns of a dark secret about her fertility doctor.
Babies...sometimes when two people decide to get together and decide they want to spend a lot of time together with each other and have a family, they decide to have babies. Because the more, the merrier, right?
In Lucy's case, it would seem she should have thought twice before making the decision to get a baby.
FALSE POSITIVE Movie Plot
The movie is about Lucy, a woman desperate to have a baby, and her supporting husband Adrian who readily agrees to everything she says. This alone should have made her suspect her husband's integrity in the first place. No one agrees so quickly to something without a proper argument at least.
But Lucy thinks she's one of the privileged ones who is going to have it all. In fact, she actually says that in the movie, "Am I going to be one of those women who is going to have it all?" Well, something along those lines anyway.
When Lucy can't get pregnant after so many attempts, her husband Adrian sets up an appointment with the charming Dr Hindle who guarantees Lucy will have a baby with his treatment.
Lucy is ecstatic and presumably begins to dream about babies and therefore manages to completely miss the evil twinkle in her doctor's eyes. She also doesn't think too much about the fact that the nurse, upon registration, calls her Lucia instead of Lucy.
Now, Lucia is supposed to be Lucy's actual name but she changes it because she thinks 'Lucy' is a far more modern name that will help her career. In fact, she hates the name Lucia so much she makes sure the nurse changes it immediately.
Adrian is being the dutiful, loving husband who used to be a doctor too but was thrown out of the hospital he worked in because he did a pro bono treatment for a patient against rules. But he misses his life as a doctor and he and Dr Hindle are really, really close.
Lucy finds out much later how close they really are.
Soon enough, Lucy has her treatment and a few days later, while she's working, she throws up and of course, that's an indication she's pregnant and not food poisoning.
Tests confirm that Lucy is pregnant and she is super excited. Dr Hindle is the best thing that's ever happened to her.
But the minute she's gotten what she wanted, she suddenly decides she wants to go the 'mid-wife' way based on the cover of a magazine on which Dr Hindle and the mid-wife, Grace is. To add insult to injury, she steals the magazine from the waiting room not realising it may be the only copy in circulation, because a couple of scenes later, a nurse from the clinic comes all the way to see Lucy and collect it.
By then, Lucy has already contacted the mid-wife, joined a group of new mommies, one of whom she quickly gels with, Corgan, a woman who can't get an appointment with Dr Hindle and wants to do nothing but get pregnant.
Lucy thinks she's on top of the world because, at her office, she is getting the promotion she thinks she deserves, has an amazingly supportive husband, a baby on the way, a delivery plan, just...everything.
But then she gets an unpleasant surprise with the news that she isn't pregnant with one but three babies. And unfortunately, due to a complication, she would have to go for a reduction procedure wherein she would have to choose between twin boys or a girl who is already smaller than she should be. Dr Hindle's advice...keep the boys.
But more than anything, Lucy always wanted a girl because of Peter Pan, Wendy...her mother...?
At this point, the movie is trudging along and taking too long to get to the point, so it's easy to get distracted by the fly on the wall.
It's something to do with Peter Pan.
Lucy decides she wants the girl no matter what and doesn't care the girl might have complications upon birth or that she's sacrificing two healthy boys. She doesn't even take a day or two to think about it.
No, she wants a girl because...Peter Pan and Wendy.
Adrian agrees after something that is barely an argument. That right there should have made Lucy suspicious but she still thinks she's the woman who is going to have it all because of a classic tale of a boy who never grew up.
The reduction treatment takes place and for some reason, Lucy never suspects she's carrying twins. Wouldn't she have felt two babies in her belly? Did she not go to a single sonography after that? Was Dr Hindle that great at hiding twins from an expectant mother?
Or perhaps, he was drugging Lucy so that she would be too busy hallucinating to notice that she was carrying two babies inside her.
Things start to get muddled and uninteresting. Somewhere along the lines, Dr Hindle gets an award given to him by Adrian. Lucy suspects Dr Hindle is up to something because he's just too charming and too arrogant about him being smart. She suspects Corgan of being in cahoots with Dr Hindle after finding some pills in her bathroom. What was Lucy doing in Corgan's bathroom? Snooping, of course.
Lucy finds pictures in Adrian's safe of her meeting with Grace and realizes she's being followed. She hallucinates Dr Hindle and Adrian having an affair. Because of her erratic behaviour, Lucy is asked to step down as lead from a project at work.
Lucy has now become the woman who has lost it all. She even loses the magazine she stole from the waiting room.
Soon enough she goes into labour and Grace is called. But Grace quickly asks the couple to call an ambulance because Lucy is giving birth to the twins.
When the twins come along and are placed beside Lucy, she isn't happy to finally have babies but is pissed off that she was lied to. She tries to carry on her motherly duties but has no affection for the babies she didn't want to have.

Eventually, Lucy loses it completely, possibly as a result of postpartum depression.
She picks up her twins and in her mind, has set them free out the window. She hallucinates them flying just as Peter Pan and the kids must-have. Fortunately, that horrific scene isn't true and it was just Lucy hallucinating doing something so evil.
When Adrian comes in, she tells him to take the babies and leave forever.
After that, she goes to confront Dr Hindle who proudly lets on another secret, it was his sperm all along.
He wanted to create more people like him but didn't want to go the cloning way. He wanted several younger versions of himself who would be blessed with his superior intelligent and good looking genes. He even shows off the refrigerator where he's kept his superior sperm.
Lucy isn't impressed and attacks the doctor and destroys the sperm by dropping the refrigerator with her superior strength. The nurse comes along and is attacked too. Dr Hindle is killed as Lucy is on a rampage. All she wants is her dead daughter who is attached to the placenta.
She takes it home and unwraps the package. In her mind, the baby is alive and turns its head to breastfeed.
The movie's tagline may have been to trust a mother's intuition but it was mostly about a mother dealing with mental health issues and not getting the help she wanted. It didn't help that the people she was supposed to trust, betrayed her but it was Adrian's fault for not seeing that Lucy needed help for her mental problems before she got pregnant to have a 'superior genes baby.
He should have noticed how fixated she was on the Peter Pan story. Sure, he wanted to get back to being a doctor and a partner in the practice, but was that at the risk of breaking his marriage? Did he not care about Lucy at all?
Did he want to be the man who has it all? The man who had babies from his actual lover, Dr Hindle; become a doctor again...and what about Lucy? Just a nanny for the babies?
Adrian clearly did not think his nefarious plan through if he didn't take into account that Lucy was strong-willed and obsessed with having the 'right' baby.
Eventually, it's a movie about people with twisted desires who want to bring innocent babies into this crooked world filled with hidden agendas.
