The Block Island Sound-- Ending Spoilers

PLOT SUMMARY: A strange phenemenon disrupts life at Block Island Sound. When Harry's father disappears, Harry must get to the bottom of the mystery. Our fascination with the unknown is what spurred studies and experiments which in turn has led to advancement in science. We have always been curious about the world beyond our planet, have we not? Surely, we cannot be the only ones in the whole galaxy. There must be someone else on another planet, and it is that intrigue that has driven the imagination of countless writers. We have imagined the aliens to be blue or green, with giant heads and bulging eyes; with superpowers even. But this begs the question, have we wondered what the aliens must think about us if they truly exist? For all the movies and jokes about humans wanting to probe aliens...perhaps they are just as curious? THE BLOCK ISLAND SOUND Movie Plot  The movie begins with an old man called Tom waking up on his fishing boat, feeling confused. He sees a dog leash and wonder

Scary Urban Legends: Baku--The Dream Eater

Baku-san, come eat my dream. Baku-san, come eat my dream. Baku-san, come eat my dream. Did it work? Did Baku-san eat away all my nightmares? Legend has it that there was once a creature called Baku-san who was made up of 'leftover' animal parts. It has an elephant nose, rhinoceros eyes, a bear's body, tiger's feet and an oxen's tail. This creature features in both Chinese and Japanese legends. While in the Chinese legend, Baku was an animal hunted for its pelt to create a talisman that would protect the wearer from evil spirits, in the Japanese version, it was known as a dream-eater. As in the Japanese legend, if a kid had a nightmare, they could call upon the creature and have it come and devour the dream. But here's the catch, the Baku is a creature that has a voracious appetite and the nightmares must be very intense. If it's simply a tame nightmare, and the Baku is called upon to feed on it, chances are it might not be satisfied and stick around to fe

Urban Legends: Mirrors and the Seven Year Theory

Mirrors, for a long time, have been the only screen where we can see our true selves. This is the only way we can look at ourselves, at the clothes we are wearing and if they suit us, to help us apply makeup, to check for pimples, moles, unwanted hair...the list goes on. Can we imagine going a whole day without looking into the mirror even once? Probably not. Mirrors have existed for a long time now and of course, centuries ago, there were a lot of superstitious people who associated everything with bringing them either good or bad luck. So of course, mirrors have their own legend. Break a mirror and you will be cursed with seven years bad luck is perhaps the most popular myth. It stemmed from the theory the Romans had about life-renewing every seven years. If you look at yourself in the mirror and then accidentally break it, you've broken your cycle and must now go through a brand new seven-year cycle. And since this occurred unnaturally, the seven-year cycle is said to bring mis

The Fear Street Trilogy

It's been more than a week since the last part of the Fear Street Trilogy was released and I have to admit I can't get those movies out of my mind. It's a teen slasher movie done exactly right and in a way, it played like episodes of a TV show with an efficient cliffhanger at the end of every movie. Usually, when movies have a lot going on, the plot gets convoluted, the pacing becomes slow and there's a very good chance to lose interest in the proceedings. But somehow, the director Leigh Janiak and the team of writers manage to accomplish the tremendous task of delivering an engaging movie every week. Can the Fear Street series become the next cult hit? Of course. It has all the elements of a cult classic after all. There's a couple of teens who are treated like a pariah, a summer camp with a killer on the loose, a woman who is accused of being a witch because she dares to be different. The Fear Street book series was already popular in the 90s. Which 90s kid hasn&

Upcoming Horror Movies: Don't Breathe 2

Remember in 2016 a riveting horror movie, Don't Breathe was released? Remember how good it was?  The twist with the old blind man?  Turns out, when a group of robbers break into the old blind man's house expecting some easy money, they didn't expect their plans to be thwarted by the ugly and dangerous secrets.  The blind old man isn't as helpless as everyone thought; he was a cold-blooded killer. Worse, he has a woman tied up in his basement and plans to impregnate her with his sperm because his daughter was killed by that woman in an accident. But because she was found by the robbers, the blind man kills her and then has another woman (one of the robbers) take her place.  Of course, she is saved and manages to get away from the blind old man whom she thinks she killed only to see later in the news he survived.  And now what does he intend to do?  Feature in a sequel of course.  The Don't Breathe 2 trailer is out and we pretty much get to see th

Game Over-- My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: A woman is given three chances to survive a night when an intruder breaks into her house.  Our experiences are what defines us. It is how we react to a situation is what either makes us or breaks us. Going through a traumatic event takes great courage but what makes it difficult is to live with it long after that event has passed. It's not surprising to hear about people suffering from PTSD after an emotional event. The challenging part is of course that people will not understand your pain or what you've gone through until and unless they too have suffered through a similar event. So it becomes easy to judge you, to mock you for not getting up and feeling fine or that your decision to seek help for your depression is actually a weakness. In such cases, people either give in to the pressure and not seek professional help or ignore their so-called loved ones and get some help. Unfortunately, those who don't reach out for help, often take their own lives. So, ye

Fear Street Part Three: 1666—My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: The truth about Sarah Fier's curse is revealed. The Shadysiders have a chance to end the curse once and for all.  Did you ever wish you were born in a different era when things were supposedly simpler? The good ol' days, so to speak. While we concern ourselves with the simplicity of life back then we fail to notice that people's tolerance level was too low. Being different meant being an abomination. Speaking your mind meant the words were of the devil. Imagine never being allowed the freedom to think and do as you please. Then, the good ol' days don't seem that good anymore. Fear Street ends the trilogy with a movie that takes place in 1666, you know, the era where when anything went wrong, all the blame went to a woman someone or the other was jealous of. And of course, there's the triple six in the end...

Violation-- My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: When her brother-in-law breaks her trust, Miriam goes on a path of revenge.  Don't... Stop. These words when used in a different context can change the meaning. For Miriam, these words were used to beg to be let go and not be hurt. For Dylan, these words were an encouragement to keep going, to continue to attack Miriam because that is what she wants. Violation is a bit hard to watch and some of it is because the scenes keep jumping between past and present and we can't exactly understand whether that particular instance took place before or after the "incident". VIOLATION Movie Plot  The movie begins with a couple, Miriam and Caleb, taking a long drive to Greta and Dylan's place. Greta is Miriam's sister and the women bond over childhood stories. But it becomes apparent that Miriam shares a better rapport with her brother-in-law Dylan who she apparently went to school with and shares some stories with him. When they arrive at a waterfall, they st

Fear Street Part Two: 1978 Movie Ending Explained

PLOT SUMMARY: The year is 1978 and Ziggy and her sister Cindy are at Camp Nightwing. The fun ends when a camper is possessed and the killings begin.  Sequels can be tricky. Usually, the audience has set the expectation for the story from the first film. The first part is the foundation of the series and based on that the audience is going to return in order to find out what happens next. Very rarely you will find a sequel that is better than the first. In this case, the sequel is better than the first part . Why? For one thing, the characters are better etched out and we do sympathize with them. Secondly, the story feels complete, something that was lacking in the first part . Sure the first part is supposed to leave questions unanswered on purpose but it also makes you feel like you are watching an incomplete movie because you don't get to learn about the characters or why it is such a big issue that they simply cannot leave Shadyside if it is such a cursed land.

Forest of the Dark Exclusive Chapter!

From Chapter Twenty Rudra was telling her about his experiences in the woods and a girl he had met—Nisha, but Preeti was too distracted to pay full attention to his narration. He was holding her hand as they walked and even helped her over a fallen tree that was blocking their path. She saw no obstacles and didn’t even feel the cold. The rain was gone leaving behind a chill in the air and small puddles which Rudra navigated them around. She didn’t care how eerie the forest was or how quiet—just that she was no longer alone. Her boyfriend Abhi had held her hands many times, but not once had she felt safe like she did just now. She knew that it wasn’t the appropriate time to think about her relationships, but she wished she had never been with Abhi. Watching Rudra taking care of her right now, she thought back to the time he had proposed her and she had said no. If only she could go back in time, she would kick herself for rejecting his proposal, because now it was too late... Rudra wa

Aadita Exclusive Chapter

EXCERPT FROM   CHAPTER TWELVE Her head burned and her shoulders felt heavy, so she put down her head on her arm and stared at the paper before her.  It was pointless; she was no closer to the truth than she was when she had begun. She tapped the pencil restlessly on the desk and stared at the name she had written on the paper.   AADITA That was the name Ahan had told her.  She was supposed to be her great Aunt and it pained Raina to know that a total stranger knew more about her family than she herself did.  Then again, Ahan did live in a small town and gossip was passed on more freely than in her city where everyone thought it best to mind their own business. What did she know about Aadita?  That she had been her great Aunt and since she had seen her ghost, that meant she was dead.  Raina closed her eyes and bit her lip hard until it hurt.  This is ludicrous, her mind yelled.  Ghosts and apparitions simply do not exist and are just a conjuration of the idle mind.   Yet, granted that s
