House of Darkness-- My take on the movie with spoilers!
Plot: When Hap gets himself invited at Mina's house, he is unaware of the dangers within.
There is an internet joke about Justin Long always suffering a terrible tragedy in horror movies. Well, in the case of House of Darkness, it is true again.
At this point, casting Justin Long in horror movies is just like giving away spoilers before if is released.
House of Darkness plays out more like an extended scene than a movie. It is different, and that is not necessarily a compliment.
With only four characters in the movie, the story doesn’t get complex and relies on lengthy dialogues and little action.
HOUSE OF DARKNESS Plot
Hapgood, or Hap as he likes to call himself, drops Mina home and gets himself invited. He thinks Mina is the most beautiful woman he has ever seen in his life. Her fashion does imply she may not be of this decade.
They do this whole thing where they call out on each other for being the first one to flirt with the other. Mina acts a little coy but her words show she is anything but.
Hap is mesmerized by her mansion and for a second thinks there is someone else in the house even though Mina insinuated she lived alone. He then realizes he was looking into a mirror even though the figure he saw clearly belonged to a woman.
They flirt, and drink, then flirt and drink some more. Mina gets him to confess that Hap was married although he is separated. Somewhere along the lines, Mina also informs him she had been married once. Both of them, when asked, chose not to answer directly and evade the question for a full two minutes before replying.
Eventually Mina and Hap start making out, and that is when a woman walks in with a greeting. It is Lucy and she introduces herself as Mina's sister.
There's some more drinking, and eventually Hap passes out. He dreams he is in the dark, tied up. His surroundings appear to be a cave. Something strange seems to want to grab him.
He awakens and finds Mina gone for a while. Hap turns on the charms for Lucy who he claims is easy to talk to.
Eventually, the sisters pull him back into the sitting room and demand they share ghost stories. Hap has to go first.
He is terrible at it and admits it. He is right. The sisters aren't impressed and Lucy tells him that every good story starts with Once Upon a time.
Hap's stories have no ghosts in them so he disinterestedly inserts floating objects that the sisters don't care for.
It is then time for Lucy to tell a tale.
HOUSE OF DARKNESS Ending Explained
Lucy tells Hap the story of a girl who lived in a farm with her family. When her parents die, the little girl is left all alone and rather than helping her, some men abducted her, took her to the forest, and have their way with her.
The girl was left battling for her life when a kind man with two daughters found her.
At this point, another sister called Nora surprises Hap. He is shocked and gets the inkling that something is up.
The story continues. The girl is revived by being fed drop by drop.
Hap asks what they mean with drop by drop. The sisters avoid the question.
The girl then avenged herself and from thereon, preyed on men.
Hap is freaked out. He calls the story disturbing and demand that they let him leave.
He checks the front door and it is locked. He storms in and demands they open it when the door automatically opens.
He steps out only to find Mina standing there. She attacks his neck and tears out a big part of his flesh. Blood gushes out.
Hap collapses and Lucy and Nora come to tear him apart. Blood flows endlessly.
The story and the movie end.
HOUSE OF DARKNESS would have worked so well as a short rather than a full-length movie. It is supposed to be a slow burner but ends up fizzling out toward the end.
Scare Scale: 2/5
