Sick-- My take on the movie with spoilers!
PLOT: Parker and Miri head out to the lake during the pandemic and become targets for a serial killer.
Late in 2019, when the Covid virus made news, no one believed the impact of the virus would be so much that it would effect our day to day lives.
Come 2020 and there was still some uncertainty regarding the spread of the virus.
And then it happened.
The virus entered every country, infected a lot of people and created chaos. Curfews were implemented. Schools and offices were closed down and everything became online.
Masks had to be worn everywhere. Social distancing had to be maintained. The lack of footfall ensured the failure of several businesses.
And then the vaccines rolled out. Soon, the majority of people were vaccinated and the severity of the disease lessened.
There were a lot of people who argued that the vaccines would have adverse effects. There were also those who didn't believe the virus existed and blamed on government conspiracy.
The Covid cases may be on the downside at the moment but the threat of the fast mutating virus looms.
Which is why it is no surprise that there would be horror movies on this topic.
SICK is a slasher movie but eventually it is a movie about the impact of Covid in the lives of people.
It does start off strong but towards the middle, it loses its steam and becomes a tad mediocre in the middle before the shocking finale.
SICK Movie Plot
Tyler is at a supermarket when he gets texts from an unknown contact. He ignores it only to receive a photo of his backside. He turns and flips the bird.
The rest of the customers are probably wondering what is going on and why some random guy is showing him the finger.
Tyler heads home but that really isn't his safe place anymore. He is attacked and while he tries to fight back, he is in a slasher movie and is easily killed.
The scene cuts to Parker receiving texts from an unknown number too. She is busy posting photos on social media and making sure all her followers are aware where she is headed. Whether her followers are turning up online to see her posts or not is another story.
She is joined by her friend Miri who reminds her that a pandemic is going on. The year is 2020. Miri is particular about masks. Parker tells her they are outside and so masks don't matter. Miri refuses to get in the car until Parker dons a mask. Finally, Parker does and off they go.
At the lake, the girls are basking in the sun. The water is too cold, however, and so Miri doesn't want to swim. Parker moans about her ex DJ and then the messages she has been receiving about having fun and jumping into lakes. Miri reminds Parker of her obsession to post everything online. So no wonder everyone knows where Parker is.
Later in the evening, the girls think they are being stalked only to realize it is DJ. He wants to get back together with Parker who isn't interested but still allows him to stay the night considering the long drive he made.
Miri also agrees to him staying on. After she heads to bed however, DJ tells her that although they are not in a serious relationship, there is something between them. Parker doesn't deny it. But DJ does confront her about her public make out session with a guy called Benji. Parker is nonchalant about that and tells DJ she is too tired to have a serious discussion.
At night, Parker wakes up to hear music. She thinks it is DJ and goes out to scream at him when DJ shows up. It isn't him. There is someone else in the house who was lurking around that Parker hadn't noticed.
He tells her to go wake up Miri while he does what male characters do...try to protect women but instead get killed.
It's a horror movie after all.
DJ also tries to put up a good fight like Tyler but ends up getting killed in a brutal manner.
DJ seems to walk outside and towards the car that Parker and Miri manage to start. That is when Parker notices DJ isn't walking but dragging his toes.
The masked killer is behind him, holding him up with a stick. So...just how strong is this killer?
It doesn't matter how strong he is, he is going to end up being no match for the girls.
The girls try to drive away but their tyres are slashed so they head back indoors.
Parker and Miri go up the stairs and try to escape through the window with the killer hot on their heels. Somehow, Miri falls off the roof and lays sprawled on the ground. There's no blood pooling under her so there's hope for her yet.
Parker does some running around until she ends up in the kitchen and brawls with the killer. She ends up getting the upperhand when she gets a bucket and smashes the killer's head with it.
There's no way the killer is going to pull a Scream and get up after that hit.
He doesn't. But there's still some time for the movie to end and Parker barely takes a breath before she sees another masked man enter the house. This man kneels beside the dead killer and weeps. Clearly these two have an intimate relationship.
Parker manages to run outside and thinks about crying over her friend but doesn't need to. Miri is alive but has injured her leg. Parker plans to go across the lake to get help and so Miri pretends she is dead as the killer comes to sniff around.
Parker goes to a neighbor's house who thinks she is an intruder and points a gun at her face. Parker has less than ten seconds to convince her neighbor he knows her since she was a kid. The neighbor puts down the gun for two seconds before he realizes he should have never put down the gun. The masked killer not only reached the house first but also managed to break into the house from another entrance.
There goes the neighbor while Parker watches in shock. Then she does some more running around until she reaches a road and flags down a car.
The woman inside isn't too keen to let her in since Parker isn't wearing a mask.
The killer is coming after her and Parker manages to convince the woman to open the door for her. The woman hands her an extra mask and Parker gets into the car.
But the mask smells funky and it isn't because it was taken out from a stinky bag. It's chloroform.
Parker loses consciousness and wakes up back in the house.
It's time for the big reveal.
SICK Ending Explained with Spoilers
The killer reveals himself to be the father of Benji, the guy Parker made out with at a "I don't believe in Covid" party. Turns out she should have believed in it a little bit because she infected Benji who then later died in a hospital.
So the plan was to track down who infected Benji. Parker was the one. She claims to not having Covid but against her will, she is given a nose swab test.
Turns out she is positive but asymptomatic. She in turn was infected by Tyler, the guy who was done away with in the first scene.
The family wanted revenge and then killed everyone Parker knew and came in contact with. Is it because they were going to end up dying of Covid? They might have not, you know?
In their mind, it was okay if the others died because of Parker. Even their other son?
Miri is up and has already made a makeshift cast using cling film to hold everything down. She manages to get to her laptop and send emergency messages.
The killer notices that the WiFi is being used and breaks the router.
Miri isn't certain if her messages have gone through but she does know that she may be infected by Parker.
He goes in search of Miri who manages to come up behind the vengeful mother and push her out the window. She frees Parker just in time for the killer to come. He is pushed too and he falls on the antlers and dies. Hopefully.
The girls run out only for the woman to come at them. The girls manage to set her on fire and she run amok before collapsing on the road.
Sirens are heard and the girls hold hands. Miri has accepted that she has been infected by Parker.
Hopefully the police will be told that Parker is infected and they can isolate her.
The movie ends.
SICK could have worked with more dark humor since some scenes did touch upon it.
It was an interesting take on the effects of the pandemic and the mentality of people as they went through it.
Fear of being infected can sure make people do weird things.
