Our House— My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY:  Ethan thinks he's invented a device that helps him communicate with his dead parents. However, he soon realizes that the channel he has opened has brought something sinister into his home.

Life is sometimes about making connections with other people. The world can be dark, scary, and unforgiving, so it's always nice to have someone by your side who sticks by through thick and thin.
Having your parents support you is a blessing and having good friends, a boon.

Sometimes, though, bad things happen, and you are left without a support system. Your friends may leave and go live far away, your parents may not be by your side forever.

It's a shuddering thought but unavoidable. As much as we appreciate people being there for us, we must live with a sense of fear, because something could happen to our loved ones and we would be left all alone.

Our House addresses this issue and shows the aftermath of the parents' death.

OUR HOUSE Movie Plot

Ethan is an inventor who is working on a device that is supposed to create wireless electricity. Yes, SUPPOSED to.

He devotes so much time to his project, that he ignores his family and his responsibilities. As he is leaving to go out at night, his father reminds him that his family should be his priority as well. Ethan promises to give all his time to his siblings Matt and Becca.
Ethan's project fails at the trial and the next morning he receives a call from his brother Matt, that his parents died in a car crash.

Three months pass and Ethan has taken full responsibility for his siblings and taken up a job as well. One day he receives a package and decides to resume his project.

His dedication to his project causes him to miss out on picking up his siblings, and Matt especially is pissed off because he blames his brother for working on the device when he should have been there that night. According to him, his parents would still be alive.

Ethan apologizes but explains he wants to keep working on his project.

Then an astounding thing happens. Every time Ethan starts the machine, dark, swirling smoke appears that also leaves behind messages: We are here.

It doesn't take long for the three siblings to believe their parents are trying to contact them. How? The device apparently opens a channel for ghosts to appear.

But, for the moment, their parents only seem to be talking to Becca, the youngest. And a girl.

Now if you've seen a lot of horror movies like me, you can guess what must be happening, though it in no way hampers your viewing experience. The ghosts are only talking to a little girl. She keeps talking about a new friend she has made who lives in the house.

Yup, the ghosts are evil.

They ask Becca to convince Ethan to strengthen the signal so they can come forth and he does exactly that with the help of his neighbor Tom who lost his wife recently.

He helps Ethan and the signal gets stronger, causing the black smoke to manifest into a human figure. This, I have to admit, looks really creepy.

Soon Tom is visited by his dead wife and realizes Ethan's machine does more than create wireless electricity.
Hannah, Ethan's girlfriend and Co-creator of the machine, shows him a video of the black smoke appearing on their first trial.

Ethan is now convinced it is not his parents who are contacting them but something more sinister.

He visits his neighbor who tells him that Becca's friend Alice was actually a girl who lived in Ethan's house with her foster parents, and who disappeared. Allegedly, the foster father had something to do with her disappearance.

Hannah later points out to Ethan that his machine didn't create a channel, but simply amplified the energy that was already there.
The ghosts appear and attack the siblings as well as Hannah.
Ethan manages to destroy the machine just as the ghosts are about to harm Tom and the siblings.

Ethan decides to sell the house and the movers find a doll Becca likes to play with. She takes it but leaves it back at the house.

The family moves into the new house.

But uh-oh, one of the boxes contain the doll.

Is Alice or Henry, the foster father, still looming around, haunting the family?

Well, hopefully, they can't get to the family without the device. And Ethan won't be inventing any more machines, would he?

This was an interesting movie that dealt with the loss of parents realistically. The family is still grieving, Ethan is trying to get it together, but he is like a young parent without too much help.

The scenes with the apparitions were well executed and actually give you the creeps.

A nicely made movie with an interesting, and frightening concept.

Scare scale:  4/5
