PLOT SUMMARY: Eight passengers aboard a yacht face a threat from the ninth passenger.
When you come across a movie title, often, you'll check the reviews and make up your mind on whether or not to give it a watch.
Horror movies have a terrible reputation for some reason. Not many movies get a solid seven or eight on review sites.
Even a 5 is rare.
So, if I see a movie with a three-point rating, I watch it and yes, there are times when I actually enjoy the movie and feel the rating was unjust.
The Ninth Passenger does deserve the rating it has got on review sites, unfortunately.
The problem isn't with the tacky effects. Even the acting is passable.
THE NINTH PASSENGER Movie Plot
There is Malcolm who is meeting a woman for the first time after chatting on a dating app. But he's a cook on the yacht. He pretends to be Marty whose father owns a big corporation. The yacht belongs to him but Marty takes it for a ride when his girlfriend catches him talking to another girl and he wants to get back together with her.
There are Jess and Nicole, two girls who readily go aboard a yacht with Marty and Lance, the latter who gets into bed with anyone.
How many does that make? Seven.
Who is the eighth one? A guy pretending to be a mechanic but is actually stealing important files the CEO of a big firm thinks it is safe to keep in a yacht.
Now, who could be the ninth passenger you ask?
A weird mutated monster that was a result of the toxic spills Marty's father is responsible for.
Once they start to move, the mechanic is stranded. He cannot jump into the water because he's holding files on his computer.
Jess, has nothing to do since Nicole has hooked up with Lance, so she starts following the mechanic, knowing he is up to no good. She lectures him on the deck about the environment and how the big bad company hurts marine life.
The mechanic hints at the office and Jess scrambles down while the mechanic, whose name is Brady, heaves a sigh of relief for getting rid of Jess.
Soon enough, they come across an island and strange things start to occur.
Jess, Nicole and Lance stay on board, while the rest want to investigate what's going on at the island. And of course, their yacht is stranded so they want to find help as well.
Tina and Malcolm are killed. Christy confesses to Marty that she had an affair with Lance.
Meanwhile, Lance has gone paranoid after sensing a monster onboard. He uses a harpoon to defend himself and accidentally kills Nicole with it.
Marty comes on board and it doesn't matter if there's a monster roaming around, or they are stranded in the middle of nowhere or whatever, he wants to kill Lance for having an affair with his girlfriend.
Lance is stabbed but wakes up thinking he could be okay. But nope, the monster lunges at him and kills him.
Outside, Marty and Christy are taken too.
There may be more than one monster, but the cheap effects and terrible storyline doesn't make you care enough.
THE NINTH PASSENGER Ending Explained with Spoilers!
The remaining two call for help and are intercepted by a guy who sends in his guards to check the boat. He orders his men to kill anyone who is bitten by the monster.
Lance was alive in spite of a stab wound and being mauled by the monster. But he doesn't get to live. He's taken in a body bag.
Jess keeps going on and on about being attacked but everyone finds her boring and pays her no attention. Brady finally comes clean about his mission to retrieve the files for the company.
Again, the motives are not appreciated by anyone, and Jess and Brady jump into the sea.
Here's when it gets annoying.
Brady keeps screaming at Jess to get to the lifeboat, about a hundred times. Unfortunately, the monsters are in the sea and suck them both in.
Everyone's dead.
The end.
This movie was just plain silly, fails to deliver a convincing plot, and gets boring quickly.
Not the type of movie to watch even if you are bored.
