Itsy Bitsy-- My take on the movie with spoilers!
PLOT SUMMARY: A family moves into a new house only to be stalked by a giant spider.
We’ve all heard the Itsy Bitsy Spider nursery rhyme as a kid.
It seemed so innocent then, didn’t it? It’s about this little spider trying to climb up but getting washed down by the rain. Does the spider give up? Nope. As soon as the rain stops, he climbs again. Whether or not he succeeded in this endeavour, is never revealed.
Perhaps this is why I never developed a fear of spiders. Spiders seemed so innocent in the poems and stories we read as kids. And they did get rid of the pesky flies.
And then, of course, there is Spider-Man. He got bit by a spider and look how his life turned around.
So, no. I’m not afraid of spiders but I wanted to take up the challenge of watching a horror movie that featured spiders. Will I finally develop a fear for the eight-legged creatures?
After watching the movie, still no. The giant spider still looks like it can be taken down with a swing of a bat. And it kind of does get taken down.
ITSY BITSY Movie Plot
The movie begins with a scene from a long time ago. A tribe is performing a ritual where a sacrifice is being made to appease a god. That very scene is a bit disturbing and I was glad it lasted only a few minutes.
Cut to the present, a mother is driving her kids to a house where she has been hired as a caretaker for an elderly man suffering from a disease.
The man has plenty of artefacts gathered from his travels when he could still walk. He is visited by a man and the meeting doesn’t go well.
We return to the mother, Kara who wants to give her two kids Jesse and Cambria a good home and life, but she is suffering from PTSD which caused her to be fired from her job.
Apparently, she was in an accident that caused the death of her other son. Unable to get over it, she has asked her son Jesse to take care of his sister Cambria.
The poor boy has to do everything; even placate his sister after she has nightmares.
Kara, on the other hand, is struggling with her addiction to pills and it isn’t long before she picks a few from the elderly man’s closet.
ITSY BITSY Ending Explained with Spoilers!
The stranger who had gifted the elderly man a large egg returns covertly, but when he is found out, he escapes and breaks the egg.
He drives away in a van but it isn’t long before he finds a large blister on his arm that cracks open and kills him.
What is inside the egg? Just some gooey yellow-green stuff. But was there something else in there?
Yes, there was.
The ancient god who was being prayed to has returned and taken the form of a spider. Only this time he isn’t going to bring a good harvest. He is angry and wants to gouge people’s eyes out which it does after a couple of scenes.
The kids meanwhile are stalked by the spider but Kara is hardly aware.
Soon enough she finds her kids missing and goes up the attic to find Cambria stuck on a web. Since she loved to wear her butterfly wings all the time, the spider thought she was a flying insect and his next dinner.
Jesse saves her with scissors and when the spider comes to attack, Kara becomes the protective mother she was supposed to be all this time.
The family escapes after Kara tears off the spider’s limbs.
But of course, the spider didn’t perish before laying eggs.
In the last scene, we see spiders inhabiting a dollhouse.
The movie had some interesting scenes to deliver but they were hardly horror related. Kara’s character was especially well written as was Jesse’s.
The family drama took over the horror elements in the movie to the point that you just want to swat at the spider yourself so you can focus on how the family is going to get back together and heal.
An interesting family drama with some tepid horror scenes.
Scare scale: 3/5
