Creepy Urban Legends: El Sombreron
If you’ve seen horses and dogs with their tails braided, rest assured that El Sombrerón is nearby.
That is also when you should consider warning women with long hair to be on the lookout for a short man, wearing a large hat and clothes in black. He is most likely to also be carrying a silver guitar and will stand under balconies to serenade women with large eyes and long hair.
This all sounds a bit romantic but interacting with El Sombrerón can have drastic side effects.
He does woo women and if they too happen to fall for him, they are unable to eat or drink for days, wasting away until their death.
For some reason, any food these women are served has soil mixed in them making it inedible.
The poor woman is probably entrances or else you would wonder why she would fall in love with a short man who has an opaque face and in some renderings, looks like an old man.
His appeal is thought to be the songs he sings for his beloved, one that only the woman can hear.
The El Sombrerón appears at dusk, bringing along with him mules and dogs on a chain. As soon as he sets his sight on a woman with large eyes and long hair, he is smitten and marks her by tying up miles outside her house.
If the woman isn’t already braiding her hair, she will suddenly be seen with braids, another sign she is being wooed by El Sombrerón.
There is no escaping this bogeyman who waits until the woman he desires dies after being unable to eat. Then he collects her soul and goes away from that town.
There really is no way to escape El Sombrerón, is there?
