You're not alone-- My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: Emma feels like she is losing it when she moves into a new house with her daughter Isla, and unexplained things begin to happen.

It’s come to a point that from now on real estate agents will not only have to disclose if there have been any murders taken place in houses but also reveal if anyone is living behind the walls.

How many movies have used the same idea of an attacker living behind the walls, spying on the family, finding some weird, voyeuristic joy in stalking them before killing them?

You're Not Alone Movie Plot

The movie begins with Emma finding out that after her husband Patrick’s death, he’s left everything to her, including the house. Of course, custody of daughter Isla goes to her, much to the displeasure of Patrick’s mother who doesn’t like Emma. The reason? Emma and Patrick had apparently separated before his death. The reason for that is disclosed towards the end.

Emma takes Isla with her to her new home. She has a daughter who she doesn’t connect with, a waitressing job she isn’t good at and a new house she can’t maintain properly.

During dinner, she tells Isla that they will always have complete transparency between them. The next day, Emma thinks she is going to win her daughter over with a flip phone. Isla looks at her like she’s gone nuts before saying her classmates have phones they can watch videos on.

At work, Emma is told to keep her hair tied. She gets late to pick up Isla and to make up for all her shortcomings, she offers to take her for ice cream. But before that, she meets Mark, a friend from her past who clearly wants more than friendship from her.

At night, the security alarm keeps going off and Emma senses someone has entered her house. She keeps seeing dead birds outside her house and assumes it’s her neighbour’s cat who keeps bringing the birds to her house.

She also finds Isla not in her room one night and finds her near the woods scared and talking about lost ghosts. To connect with her and make her happy, Emma teaches Isla how to make clay figurines.

Isla takes to it immediately and is inspired by the cat clock they have on the wall.

Emma is still haunted by her past where she keeps remembering herself in the tub when Patrick bursts in and screams at her. She has blood droplets falling into the bathwater.

At work the next day, Emma sees a pregnant woman and remembers how happy she was when she was pregnant. The thought disturbs her and she rushes out the restaurant. Her boss keeps yelling at her to stay and complete her shift but Emma is already gone. Somehow she still manages to keep her job in spite of her eccentricities.

She’s late picking up Isla again, but Mark, fortunately, is there to help her. Except he’s also in her house and Emma doesn’t seem interested in asking what he’s doing inside her house. (He could have easily called her. He has the key to enter Emma’s house but doesn’t have her number?)

Before leaving, he leaves behind a softball bat, a gift for Isla and Emma.

Isla is still making figurines and talks about the lost ghost trying to make contact. At night when the security alarm goes off again and Emma gets antsy, she goes to see her sister Ashley whose boyfriend is allergic to wearing shirts. She cheers up her sister and lets her stay the night.

The next morning, Isla is still at home, clearly not interested in doing well at school. She thinks she will do better as a clay figurines maker. Ashley comes in and mentions wanting to give Emma a surprise by cooking for her. She plays hide and seek with Isla but only manages to be abducted by whatever is in the closet.

Isla doesn’t bother telling Emma her sister had come and that she is missing. Who cares?

Emma is losing it and consults her psychiatrist about starting to lose it. He doesn’t want to give her any more free advice on the video chat and asks her to make a proper physical appointment so he can bill her.

That night, the alarm goes off, there’s a pile of dead birds and Emma thinks she saw an intruder in her house. The police don’t want to do a proper search of the house and blame Emma for not shutting her door properly.

When Emma goes back to Ashley’s, nobody is home, not even the shirtless boyfriend. Emma thinks her sister probably went on the vacation she was always talking about. Isla says something about people always turning up in the end. Sadly Ashley doesn’t make an appearance again.

Emma decides to install cameras but doesn’t use a drill. Her walls are soft enough for her to just screw in the cameras. She sets up two cameras, an idea she gets at work where cameras are being installed. Emma as usual doesn’t care what she’s serving customers but interested in whatever is being added to the restaurant.

The two lousy cameras hardly show anything. Emma finds a bloody box, in a pile of boxes she still hasn’t unpacked since she moved. It’s been enough days since she moved in. She finds the dead cat and tosses it into the garbage, knowing her neighbor would be devastated.

The next day, the neighbor looks for her cat and Emma doesn’t bother to look at her or sympathize. She hated the cat and her neighbor.

The neighbor knows Emma knows more than what her nonchalant expression implied. She breaks in because somehow it is easy for anyone to enter Emma’s house. Her security alarm is set only at night too.

Mrs Wilis finds something astonishing and well, that’s the end of her role.

Emma is still not aware of what is going on in her house. She returns to see the camera broken and calls Mark who is always lurking about. He manages to get the video feed on and Emma sees her neighbor snooping.

She gets upset and Mark decides it’s the best time to take advantage and makes a move on her. Emma pushes him away and this angers Mark who leaves in a huff.

Emma decides the only one who can help her is the priest. We find out that she tried to kill herself when she was pregnant with Isla that created a rift between her and her husband. She asks for forgiveness and the priest tells her that she made a turn around so she can come back to the church.

You're Not Alone Ending Explained with Spoilers!

Emma no longer wants to go back home because of the strange occurrences, Mark’s repeated visits and Isla drawing on walls and ruining the wallpaper, they sleep in the car and are awakened by a cop. She takes Isla to the church to get her baptized against her wishes. Isla screams when she’s dunked, Emma sees blood dripping from the people’s hands and rushes out with Isla.

Isla demands Emma tell me honest with her and she reveals that she didn’t want her at first because she was sick but now would do anything to save her daughter.

The intruder behind the fireplace decides to finally come out. He’s done with the boring family drama. Emma runs around the house and finds her neighbor dead. Mark comes in and tries to attack her too because he’s pissed off at being rejected by her. The intruder in a mask and hood kills him.

Emma runs around some more and finally gathers up the strength when he’s about to hurt Isla. She stabs him on the face and collapses. She doesn’t bother removing the mask to see who it could be.

The police come and Emma is taken to the hospital. The medics bring out the intruder and remove the mask. It’s Mark.

But Emma knows it can’t be him because Mark and the intruder were there in the same place at the same time. She keeps saying it’s not him but nobody pays attention.

We will have to wait for the sequel to find out who was squatting at her house and watching the family drama unfold.

The movie had some thrilling moments, but the tired formula of someone living in the house, unknown to the family, is just too unbelievable here.
