Shook-- My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: After fellow influencers begin to get murdered, Mia must find a way to save herself when she finds out she's the next target.

People think being an influencer is easy. After all, what does their "job" actually entail? Posing for pictures? Taking pictures of random objects and sunsets and their fancy drinks?

Must be pretty easy? Right?

Well, not exactly. While influencers have their work cut out for them by staying relevant, they are also a target for vicious trolling.

And in the case of Shook, a target for murder.
SHOOK Movie Plot

We are quickly introduced to Mia, who runs a social media blog on makeup, Makeup with Mia. She is standing behind a building having her pictures taken with two other influencers when one of them who is carrying a dog rushes to the bathroom after being peed on by her pet.

It's a horror movie so going to the bathroom means risking your life. Especially in a bathroom where there are flickering lights and the walls and floors are browned.

Soon enough the influencer is attacked and is stabbed by her own blue heel. The dog runs away to save its own life.

Meanwhile, we are shown shots of Mia smiling at the camera to cement the fact that she is the protagonist and not the others.

Mia is an influencer so she is usually glued to her phone and apps. She has a boyfriend called Santi and friends named Jade and Lani.

Her sister Nicole lives in a big house all by herself after their mother, who Nicole was solely taking care of, passes away due to Livingston's disease.

Now Nicole has the disease because it is genetic and wants Mia to babysit her pet, Chico. Mia agrees to take over the responsibility of the dog and assures Nicole she will be there for her when the disease renders her invalid.

Nicole heads off to San Francisco for a clinical trial while Mia wanders about the house, alerting Nicole's cameras in the room she had installed to keep an eye on her mother.

Soon enough, Mia gets a call from someone called Kellan who is her neighbour and asks about his missing dog Rascal. It isn't long before Mia realizes she has lost Chico somewhere in the house.

Kellan's calls get creepier and Mia tries to ignore them by chatting with her friends. She notices them all hanging together and having a Livestream of them pretty much doing nothing but sitting on the sofa and drinking. Their followers are mesmerized by three people doing nothing but having a regular night in.

Likes and hearts keep floating up.

Mia too is engrossed but mostly because her friend is hitting on her boyfriend Santi. But Kellan keeps bugging her with incessant calls before finally showing her the dog being dragged away by his leash. The dog is mighty calm considering Kellan intends him harm. That should have been a big giveaway that something is off but Mia thinks Kellan must be a regular guest at the house for the dog to be comfortable with him.

Mia is then threatened to make choices or risk having the dog being killed. He also gives her a series of errands to do, one of which includes her voluntarily stabbing injections into her leg, and answering trivia questions such as what is the measurement of fever.

Mia doesn't know and needs to look at her dead mother's medicine pamphlets to seek the answer.

Lani then suddenly messages Mia telling her that something is going on at her house. Apparently, there is an intruder who is forcing them to say and do things.

Mia is made to choose between her friends and her dog and she keeps choosing her friends because Chico isn't her dog anyway. Kellan voices his disappointment in not choosing her sick sister's dog over her vapid friends. But Mia values human life more over pets apparently and is ready to do anything for them.

Nicole calls her in the middle to ask about her dog and Mia lies about him being fine and then apologizes for not being there to help take care of their mother. Nicole's tone turns antagonistic when Mia tells her that Chico is fine. Another hint of where this is heading...

SHOOK Ending Explained with Spoilers!

It isn't Kellan who is doing all this but Nicole who wanted to take revenge on Mia for not being there for their mother and also for not inheriting the disease.

The friends were paid to play a prank on Mia to distract them from the fact that Nicole was going to kill them.

Nicole gives Mia a choice to either save her legs or have her friends killed. Mia bashes her legs with a baseball bat to save her friends but Nicole kills them anyway because she thinks they corrupted her sister.

She also kills Kellan who is roaming about looking to date Mia. Nicole can't take her sister being more popular than her and shoots him dead.

Mia has called for an Uber but of course, he hasn't arrived yet.

The sisters struggle some more, post everything online for their followers who also have nothing better to do than watch two women have a catfight. They all have perplexed expressions on their faces instead of entertained, but at least they are getting hits.

The fight ends with Mia defeating Nicole and heading out using her mother's walker and Chico.

Mia trips and falls when the walker breaks and the dog makes a run for it in the other direction. He's clearly had it with all the drama.

Mia's Uber driver finally arrives and asks for the name and Mia says she isn't Mia. Maybe she's had it with the influencer lifestyle and wants to go back to her first name instead of her middle name.

The movie had some entertaining moments and is an okay watch.

What I'll never understand is why dogs, who are thought to be loyal, always leave their saviour's side at the first sign of trouble.

Okay,  benefit of  doubt, maybe the dog went to get the police. Maybe. Or perhaps he too shared Nicole's hatred towards the sister.

Scare scale: 3/5

Comments

  1. Me and my sister were watching this movie today and figured it out from the beginning that it was Nicole. The clue was in her Instagram profile which says "love dogs, not people" or something like that. 😄

The Limehouse Golem- My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: When Elizabeth's husband is found dead, all fingers point to her. But is it really her or the work of a serial killer? If like me, you’ve read hundreds of mysteries and are enthused about Sherlock Holmes tales, THE LIMEHOUSE GOLEM is actually pretty predictable. Set in the Victorian Era, it promises to instil fear in you. Before Jack the Ripper, there was Golem- such is the tagline and you do want it to be the kind of movie that keeps you guessing until the very end as to the true identity of the killer.   Unlike the Jack the Ripper legend, Golem is easily recognizable in the very first instance the character is introduced.

Delirium (2018)— My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: After leaving the asylum and put in house arrest, Tom begins to believe the house is either haunted or he is hallucinating.  Most times, when we think about criminals, we wonder what could possible have prompted them to fall into a life of crime.

Look Away— my take on the movie with spoilers!

Plot Summary: A bullied girl switches places with her reflection. She soon regrets her decision as people start dying.  What matters most? Looks or confidence? When we see someone for the first time, we do notice their looks, the way they dress. Personality and their ability to initiate and hold a conversation comes second, doesn't it? Imagine meeting someone who is good looking but is dull to the core. Now imagine someone with average looks but is someone you can have fun with or have an intellectual conversation. Which seems more attractive? Look Away takes a very bold stand where appearances are concerned. But also about self-confidence. In the end, the only argument it makes is that one cannot possess both attributes. LOOK AWAY Movie Plot  We are introduced to a timid girl, Maria whose father is a plastic surgeon. Her mother is shown to have no say of her own. She is left to watch her husband ridicule his daughter about not being careful with her looks. Maria has a friend Lily
