Creepy Urban Legends: KRASUE

If you see a will-o’-the-wisp in the fields at night, accompanied with a grotesque shape floating about, you may want to think twice before you go investigate it.

You may just have encountered a Krause.

A Krasue is the spirit of the woman but wait, this is no ordinary spirit. The Krasue is a floating head with viscera. Yes, she does not have a full body. Sometimes, the Krasue is depicted with only the throat, heart and lungs and intestines. Sometimes it is with all her internal organs, now exposed. Yes, it is anatomically impossible, but this is a spirit we are talking about.

Like other spirits, a Krasue is formed when a woman has indulged in a lot of sins when she was alive. She is then cursed and can only feed on uncooked and rotten food. That is her punishment.

The Krasue curse is contagious. It is said that if you consume food or water tainted with the Krasue’s saliva then the consumer becomes a Krause too. Of course, this only applies to women.

The legend also says that Krasue behaves like a normal human during daytime, although she may look sleepy. Well, obviously, if she is hunting all night then she is bound to be tired during the day. Anyway, come night time, and her head separates from her body and floats in search of blood, carrion, pieces of cattle, anything really.

If she finds someone’s clothes hanging outside, she will wipe her bloodstained mouth and even faeces on them which is why people in villages remove any clothes from the clothesline at night. It doesn’t matter if the clothes are damp. At least they won’t be soiled.

Soon after it has fed, and the Krasue will take its time because it has been cursed with an insatiable appetite, it will return to its body and sometimes will have no memory of what it has done.

A good way to prevent a Krasue from entering your premises is by surrounding your house with a spiky fence. Remember, The Krasue has hanging entrails and is scared it will get caught and she will be stuck. If she doesn’t get to her body by dawn, she will suffer great pain.

Additionally, if the body is found and destroyed, then the Krasue too is destroyed which is why she will take great pains to hide the body. Occasionally, she may attach herself to another body but of course, as it is not her own, she will live in immense pain.

Since 2008, several people have admitted to seeing strange, luminous lights in the night and over the fields. While some experts have blamed the ghostly lights on the methane gas particles, others have pointed out that a large amount of rotted organic matter has to be present to produce that much methane gas that would then appear luminescent.

A popular Thai legend, the tale of Krasue has been depicted in several movies, with the most recent one being Krasue: Inhuman Kiss released in 2019.

The movie is about a girl called Sai cursed to become a Krasue. She does have a lover who tries to help her but when the villagers are alerted, they hunt her down and when she reveals herself to be the Krasue at night, they destroy her body. Sai, in Krasue form, and her lover, try to make an escape only for someone to shoot her in the head.

That’s it for the Krasue. Both body and head destroyed.

The tale of Krasue lives on and people are curious about its existence although nobody really wants to see a body-less spirit entering your house, do you? Have you considered getting some thorny bushes and putting them around your house?

If not, be sure to build a spiky fence and take your newly washed clothes inside at night.
