The Intruder-- My take on the movie with Spoilers!
PLOT SUMMARY: Annie and Scott buy their dream home from Charlie only to realize the former owner isn't ready to let go of his house yet.
Have you ever missed watching movie clichés but can only find parodies? How about, for a change, you want to watch a movie with the usual tropes but not in comedy form?
Well then, this movie is for you.
THE INTRUDER Movie Plot
Scott is being driven home by his friend Mike who keeps telling him to act surprised for the party. Scott has just cracked a major deal and his wife, Annie, already anticipated her husband's win and so planned a party for him which Mike made it known to his friend since he can't keep secrets.
Mike enters the house, does a decent job of acting surprised while his wife looks super pleased with herself for pulling it off.
Later they are relaxing and they discuss buying Annie's dream home in Napa. Scott asks if she's sure and Annie says, yup. She doesn't want to live in this house anymore but something more remote.
Scott and Annie head out to see the house and the first thing they hear is a gunshot. Scott says, nope, I want to leave now. Annie hesitates just long enough for the hunter to find them.
It's Charlie. He has shot a deer because the neighbours have been complaining about a deer eating grass. Scott looks horrified but Charlie tries to get them interested in venison.
Charlie shows them around the house and it's clear he likes Annie. Scott isn't finding Charlie charming considering he owns a lot of guns.
Annie and Scott head out after Charlie prices the home at 3.5 million. He starts the car when Charlie comes up with another offer: 3.3 million but they get to keep all the furniture, including the small TV that doesn't run any channels.
They don't give him a definite answer and say they will think about it. But Annie has already thought about it, she wants the house.
The next instant, Annie and Scott are directing movers where to put stuff. Charlie is watching them through the window. He isn't looking too happy.
But that's not the face he shows the couple when he goes downstairs. He maintains he is going to move in with his daughter Cassidy in Florida as his wife passed away from cancer two years ago.
Annie tells him to keep in touch via emails. Charlie doesn't give it because he probably doesn't own one. Scott tries to discourage his wife from being overly friendly. She goes ahead and hugs Charlie too.
The couple settles in and invite Mike and his wife over. Mike goes outside to smoke and then throws the cigarette on the ground. Later when he's leaving, he notices a cigarette burn on his car seat. Mike loses it and wonders if they are all being watched.
At work, Scott is busy in a meeting. But when he gets a call from his wife, he leaves his meeting to attend it. Annie tells him how Charlie just showed up and is now mowing the lawn.
Scott thinks it's weird and tells her he's heading home. Annie decides to confront Charlie but he's all cheery and nice, claiming he was helping her because now she wouldn't have to mow the grass because winter is coming. He gives her all the details on how to take care of the garden.
By the time Scott arrives, Charlie has left and Annie has invited him to Thanksgiving dinner. Scott is pissed off and thinks it's okay to be rude to Charlie when he shows up for the dinner.
Charlie says thanks for inviting him but Scott replies with: it was Annie's idea.
Mike and his unnamed wife also join them. Charlie is taken around the house by Scott who rubs it in that he did away with all the old stuff and brought in new, trendy, making Annie happy, stuff. Charlie grumbles and glares but then puts on his smiley face facade.
At dinner, more remarks about the house are made and how some amount of remodelling is going to take place. Charlie is so enraged he envisions smashing a bottle on Mike's head. But again, he puts on his smiley mask.
Later, Mike is in the garden again, smoking and putting out cigarettes on the statues to irk Charlie. Charlie keeps his cool nevertheless but leaves early with a doggy bag and a remark made about how old he is and how he needs to retire.
Annie and Mike's unnamed wife chat about how hot Charlie is. Annie continues to feel sympathetic towards Charlie.
He gets all the sympathy, Scott gets all the jealous anger when he asks for ice cream at the ice cream shop.
Scott keeps hearing creaks around the house to which Annie reminds him that they live in a noisy, old house.
Scott hears sounds in the garden and goes out to hear some High school kids creating a ruckus. Scott charges at them with a baseball bat. He hates guns because his brother was gunned down when he was young. But Scott does have a bat even though we never see him play any sports. People who live in remote places buy baseball bats only to scare away trespassers.
We don't see any teenagers but hear them off-screen doing nothing too pesky that warrants a baseball bat to their heads. In the headlights, we see Charlie standing under a tree, wearing a red cap with a deer on it, and watching Scott.
The next day he offers a gun to Scott who refuses it and tells him no guns are allowed on his property. Period. Charlie looks sad, Annie feels sorry for him, Scott leaves not thinking twice that his wife may be quite gullible.
Annie and Charlie end up spending a lot of time with each other in Scott's absence. He helps her put on the Christmas lights and when they are indoors, it becomes obvious he is checking her out.
Scott returns and is peeved to find that Annie took Charlie's help.
At work, he seems to be getting close to a client of his. Charlie shows up again to apologize to Scott with a bottle of wine. He sits with her when Annie receives a text from Scott that he won't be coming home soon.
She calls him, mad as hell because he's supposed to know that she doesn't care for texts much after what he did the last time. Turns out Scott is a cheater and we are to assume that he had texted his wife the last time he was with another woman so now Annie thinks every time she gets a text it means Scott is cheating.
As it seems, she was sort of right. Scott was with a client, a woman and had taken her to a bar. After his call, he tells her regretfully that he will have to go to his wife. He reaches home to see two empty wine glasses. He gets annoyed when he learns that Charlie showed up. He pretty much insinuates that Annie is cheating on him and she tells him to stay on the topic of him texting her which equals him cheating on her.
Later, Scott is at the store when he meets one of the neighbours who tells him that Charlie did have a wife but she didn't die of cancer but suicide. Or so it would seem...he even leaves the dots in his sentence.
Scott decides to dig into Charlie's past. The next morning when he is jogging, he is hit by a car. Annie rushes to the hospital and thankfully Scott is fine.
When Mike comes to visit, Scott tells him to go check on his wife. Mike, the good friend that he is, goes to see Annie who has another visitor: Charlie.
Charlie knew about Scott's accident and gets Annie an everything pizza. She doesn't want to finish it all and invites Charlie to share it with her. But Charlie's attempt to have a romantic time with Annie is interrupted when they hear noises from outside.
Charlie picks up an axe and goes after Mike, killing him. Mike's wife doesn't bother contacting Annie and Scott later to see if they have seen her husband. No police are involved. Mike just...disappears...
Scott, after being released from the hospital, delves further into the investigation and looks up Charlie's daughter, Cassidy. She picks up the phone, voices her wish that Charlie be dead, and then hangs up.
Scott is a little better now after being hit by a car so that means some time has passed or Charlie didn't hit him hard enough. He goes home to talk to Annie and warn her to stay away but she still sides with Charlie. That is when Scott asks her to consider this: just how did Charlie know he was hurt in an accident when he brought the pizza to her.
Annie has an uh-oh moment, realizing she should have questioned Charlie rather than drool over everything pizza. Scott finally remembers he has a friend and asks Annie if he saw Mike. She says she hadn't and Scott wonders if his friend is okay.
He later gets a call back from Cassidy who is finally ready to tell him that her father is a psycho and that she was sure that Charlie murdered his wife after she threatened to take his house away. Cassidy then tells Scott she doesn't want anything to do with this anymore and to never contact her again. She had said that before too and then called. So maybe she just might call again?
THE INTRUDER Ending Explained with spoilers!
Charlie visits Annie and she gets edgy around him and pretends to be sick. She then goes around the house and finds a secret spot where there's some bedding and cans. To her horror, she realizes that all the creaking she heard around the house at night wasn't because the house was old, it was because the old owner was walking about the house.
She gets shocked and then is promptly knocked on the head. Charlie carries Annie up to her bedroom and begins forcing himself on her.
Scott appears in the nick of time. There is a long fight scene with both Annie and Scott showing they are capable of action but cannot overpower a man older than them.
Charlie manages to go to his hiding spot to get his gun. Scott had explicitly said he didn't want any guns on his property and all this time, there was a gun right over his head!
Charlie chases the couple with a gun but Scott has his trusty baseball bat and uses it to bump Charlie on the head and take his shotgun.
Charlie goads Scott, telling him there's no way he is going to kill him with the gun because of his distaste towards it.
Annie calls the police telling them her husband shot an intruder. Scott has no choice now. He is being taunted by a psychopath and his wife has already made the decision for him. His reputation is at stake.
He shoots Charlie dead.
The end.
The movie seemed more about guns than an intruder who is making a couple's life miserable. Will Scott get over his fear and finally start using guns?
Also, the story was twisted in a way to show that guns are very important if you want to safeguard yourself and your family and house. Baseball bats can only do so much damage.
