Silent Night--My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY:  A family invites over their friends and relatives to celebrate one last Christmas before catastrophe hits.

Let's suppose you know exactly how you are about to die. There is no way to save yourself, all you can do is save yourself from extreme pain by taking a pill that will let you pass away peacefully.

What would you do? Would you take the pill? Or would you be sceptical of what the government is telling you to do and see what is actually happening?

SILENT NIGHT Movie Plot

A family invites over family and friends to celebrate Christmas. It is also yhe eve of the day when a poisonous gas storm is set to hit their location, that promises instant and painful death.

It seems everyone has made peace with what is about to happen.

The party is taking place at Nell's grandmother house although the grandma is elsewhere. Her husband is Simon and children Art and  the twins Thomas and Hardy.

Art is the only one helping his mother with the cooking while Thomas and Hardy are busy playing video games. Art, while cutting carrots, bleeds all over the carrots. Nell comes in and is more concerned about the blood on the carrots than her son's bleeding hand. This is supposed to be a little funny considering this is horror comedy. Unfortunately none of the subtle jokes are funny. The attempt at dark humor makes a miss.

The guests arrive one by one. First, it is Sandra and her husband Tony and daughter Kitty. Kitty immediately asks for sticky toffee pudding which Nell forgot to make. Sandra warns her that Kitty is bound to make a huge fuss now.

Simon and Tony are sent to the store to get some pudding. Meanwhile, James and his pregnant girlfriend Sophie arrive, as well as couple Bella and Alex.

Art has been watching the news and seeing ads for the exit pill that will save people from the pain of the poisonous gas. Art has also been subjected to conspiracy theories regarding the pill and the gas and isn't too keen on taking the pill.

The dinner takes place after the sticky toffee pudding arrives. At dinner an offhand remark about the queen's age is made and about how much more she wants to live and if she will be at the bunker with dog food. Again, the joke misses the mark.

Sophie doesn't appreciate the kids making fun of the elders. She is told to be quiet as they are not her kids. It doesn't matter if she is pregnant too.

After dinner, Alex feels like a complete outsider at the gathering as no one wants to play scrabble with her. Sandra reveals she had a crush on James and wondered why he never asked her out. He claims he saw her as a friend and now he is in love but with Sophie.

Sophie and Art form a friendship as both of them are against taking the pill. Nell's grandmother calls and says goodbye as the gas comes over to where she is.

Nell cries but gets over it quickly. It is inevitable death after all.

SILENT NIGHT Ending Explained with Spoilers!

There's more talking, no comedy and no horror scenes yet. A lot of people doing like Sophie because they think she's the reason Art doesn't want to take the pill. Nell and Simon plead with him and tell him he will be left all alone after his whole family dies and Nell doesn't want to leave him all alone. Art doesn't change his mind and runs out.

He comes upon a car where a whole family, including and infant, have died after inhaling the poisonous gas. He screams and is led away by Simon.

Sophie comes to apologise and help and is told rudely by Nell to go away and stop interfering in her family matters.

Alex keeps drinking.

Soon enough, they find Art passed out and bleeding from his ears and nose. He has supposedly died.

The others realize that it is after midnight and the poisonous gas has reached their location. They take the pill quickly and lie down on their beds.

Alex is passed out and Bella makes her swallow the exit pill and then takes one herself. Moments later, Alex wakes up and throws up. Bella realizes her girlfriend will not die with her and needs to come up with another plan.  Her plan? To stab her girlfriend.

James convinces Sophie to take the pill despite her reservations. He tells her it is better as he doesn't want her or his unborn baby to suffer.

Everyone has now taken the pill. The poisonous cloud arrives.

The next morning we are shown that all of the characters have passed away.

It is then that Art opens his eyes. He is alive. Turns out the poisonous gas wasn't so poisonous after all.

The question is, what happened to the family in the car? They've been in the cold for a long time. As was the infant.

And Nell's mother. Did she die too? Had she taken the pill?

Nell and Simon were worried about Art being all alone after they died. Turns out it was Art's fate to end up alone.

But he did inhale the gas and there was blood out of his nose. Is he going to suffer some mutation now?

Silent Night isn't too scary nor comical and does a terrible job of explaining the threat that is supposed to be a turning point in the movie.

It is sad really, considering the star cast was good.

Scare scale: 2/5
