Horror Book of the Week: THE PATH OF THORNS

This week’s HORROR BOOK OF THE WEEK is THE PATH OF THORNS. Written by A.G. Slatter, this book was released in June 2022 and was published by Titan Books.

The book is on the bestseller’s list for Fairytale Fantasy and Folklore.

The story has been described as a gothic fairytale and reviewers have praised the author for creating a spellbinding tale that will keep you captivated until the very last page of the book. It’s also described as being deliciously dark with enough twists and turns to keep you hooked.

Customers who bought this book loved it, especially because of the inclusion of supernatural beings and the magical elements. Readers also commented on how it was one of those books that was hard to put down. The book was further praised for being well-written with atmospheric tension and thrills.

Quick Review (Based on Sample):

The book begins with the protagonist’s POV. We meet Asher and see her walking over to the house where she would work as a governess. The author has provided enough descriptions to set the scene and at times it feels like it takes away from whatever is happening in the story.

We are given a glimpse into Asher’s past and hinted at her secrets. The author manages to hold interest and as a reader it does make you want to pursue whatever it is the character wants to eventually reveal.

The book is well-written and the writing flows seamlessly.

THE PATH OF THORNS Plot (Taken from Amazon.com)

A lush and twisted dark fairy tale suffused with witchcraft, dark secrets and bitter revenge from the award-winning author. Exquisite, haunting and at times brutal, readers of Naomi Novik and Erin Morgenstern will be entranced.

Asher Todd comes to live with the mysterious Morwood family as a governess to their children. Asher knows little about being a governess but she is skilled in botany and herbcraft, and perhaps more than that. And she has secrets of her own, dark and terrible – and Morwood is a house that eats secrets. With a monstrous revenge in mind, Asher plans to make it choke. However, she becomes fond of her charges, of the people of the Tarn, and she begins to wonder if she will be able to execute her plan – and who will suffer most if she does. But as the ghosts of her past become harder to control, Asher realises she has no choice.

From the award-winning author of All the Murmuring Bones, dark magic, retribution and twisted family secrets combine to weave a bewitching and addictive tale.

The book is available on Kindle, Paperback and as an Audiobook

The Limehouse Golem- My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: When Elizabeth's husband is found dead, all fingers point to her. But is it really her or the work of a serial killer? If like me, you’ve read hundreds of mysteries and are enthused about Sherlock Holmes tales, THE LIMEHOUSE GOLEM is actually pretty predictable. Set in the Victorian Era, it promises to instil fear in you. Before Jack the Ripper, there was Golem- such is the tagline and you do want it to be the kind of movie that keeps you guessing until the very end as to the true identity of the killer.   Unlike the Jack the Ripper legend, Golem is easily recognizable in the very first instance the character is introduced.

Delirium (2018)— My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: After leaving the asylum and put in house arrest, Tom begins to believe the house is either haunted or he is hallucinating.  Most times, when we think about criminals, we wonder what could possible have prompted them to fall into a life of crime.

Look Away— my take on the movie with spoilers!

Plot Summary: A bullied girl switches places with her reflection. She soon regrets her decision as people start dying.  What matters most? Looks or confidence? When we see someone for the first time, we do notice their looks, the way they dress. Personality and their ability to initiate and hold a conversation comes second, doesn't it? Imagine meeting someone who is good looking but is dull to the core. Now imagine someone with average looks but is someone you can have fun with or have an intellectual conversation. Which seems more attractive? Look Away takes a very bold stand where appearances are concerned. But also about self-confidence. In the end, the only argument it makes is that one cannot possess both attributes. LOOK AWAY Movie Plot  We are introduced to a timid girl, Maria whose father is a plastic surgeon. Her mother is shown to have no say of her own. She is left to watch her husband ridicule his daughter about not being careful with her looks. Maria has a friend Lily
