Horror Weekly News: New Amazon Series Takes Inspiration from Sweeney Todd
Amazon Prime Video’s new TV series, THE HORRORS OF DOLORES ROACH has a new trailer.
Releasing on July 7th, the series is based on a podcast of the same name.
The story is about a woman called Dolores Roach who has just been released from prison. Unable to find a job, her friend who runs an empanada shop, allows her to use the basement as a masseuse centre since he believes Dolores to have “magic hands”.
Dolores finally finds stability in a job, however, when he livelihood is threatened, she is shocked to discover she will go to great lengths to protect herself, even if it means using her “magic hands” to kill someone.
Her victims are then used as ingredients for the empanadas that turn out to be so delicious, that her friend’s business also takes off.
The Horrors of Dolores Roach is said to be inspired by the tale of Sweeney Todd who was a murderous barber. His victims’ remains were used by his baker friend to bake pies.
The tale of the barber from Fleet Street originated when Sweeney Todd, the fictional character, made an appearance in The String of Pearls, a serial from the penny dreadful series.
Ever since then, the tale has been adapted several times in various media forms, including theater and movies. Sweeney Todd was believed to have really existed by some although there is no evidence that he was was real.
The character was brought into spotlight in the 2007 movie which starred Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. The movie was directed by Tim Burton and went on to win several awards.
Sweeney Todd’s story has captivated the audience for several years and now the tale is being reimagined with the release of THE HORRORS OF DOLORES ROACH.
Considering the success of the podcast, no doubt, the series will also be well-accepted by the audience.
Justina Machado, Alejandro Hernandez, and K. Todd Freeman star in this series alongside others.
The series will consist of eight episodes that will stream all at once on 7th July.
The series is produced by Amazon Studies and Blumhouse Television.
