Horror Book of the Week: The Camp by Nancy Bush

This week’s Horror Book Recommendation is THE CAMP written by Nancy Bush.

If you are a fan of camp horror stories like Friday the 13th or Yellowjackets, you will surely enjoy this book as well. The novel promises a shocking twist and an intense, thrilling story.

THE CAMP was published in June 2023 and is on the bestsellers list for Horror Suspense.

The novel has garnered positive reviews and the author has been praised for her writing style as well as her aptitude to weave an exciting story with an engaging mystery.

Customers who bought this book praised THE CAMP for being a piquant thriller and thoroughly enjoyed the twist that kept them guessing until the epilogue. However, there were negative reviews about there being too many characters and that the story sometimes lost its pace.

Quick Review of THE CAMP (Based on the sample)

In the middle of the night, a young woman follows a trail and watches the fog that seems to creep up on her. She then meets a man whom she seems to know but is carrying flowers for her and a goblet. He is also in a ski mask and uh-oh, there seems to be trouble ahead.

Moments later, the young woman is strangled and the man clearly has feelings for his victim, which also appears to be one-sided. The man returns to camp and we then meet the other characters, lots of them, and are made to participate in their Truth or Dare game, except it is all truth.

The protagonist, Emma, is introduced and we learn of an incident that takes place later at night that she finds curious, especially when one of her friends goes missing.

The story is well-written and there is a hook that draws you in. But the author’s writing style becomes a little erratic towards the middle. At one point you will get all the details of what is going on in the scene. In the next instant, there is a rush to quickly end everything and end the scene so that the author can write about the next plot twist.

The story sees a lot of changes in pace during a chapter itself which can be discouraging to a reader. However, the mystery is compelling and you may find yourself wondering how everything is going to end.

The Plot (Taken from Amazon.com)

he perfect summer suspense thriller, evoking 1980s horror movies set at sleepaway camps but with a fresh twist, from the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of The Babysitter and The Neighbors.

There are always stories told around the fire at summer camp—tall tales about gruesome murders and unhinged killers, concocted to scare new arrivals and lend an extra jolt of excitement to those hormone-charged nights. At Camp Luft-Shawk, nicknamed Camp Love Shack, there are stories about a creeping fog that brings death with it. But here, they’re not just campfire tales. Here, the stories are real.

Twenty years ago, a girl’s body was found on a ledge above the lake, arms crossed over her heart. Some said it was part of a suicide pact, connected to the nearby Haven Commune. Brooke, Rona, and Wendy were among the teenagers at camp that summer, looking for fun and sun, sex and adventure. They’ve never breathed a word about what really happened—or about the night their friendship shattered.

Now the camp, renamed Camp Fog Lake, has reopened for a new generation, and many of those who were there on that long-ago night are returning for an alumni weekend. But something is stirring at the lake again. As the fog rolls in, evil comes with it. Those stories were a warning, and they didn’t listen. And the only question is, who will live long enough to regret it?

The Limehouse Golem- My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: When Elizabeth's husband is found dead, all fingers point to her. But is it really her or the work of a serial killer? If like me, you’ve read hundreds of mysteries and are enthused about Sherlock Holmes tales, THE LIMEHOUSE GOLEM is actually pretty predictable. Set in the Victorian Era, it promises to instil fear in you. Before Jack the Ripper, there was Golem- such is the tagline and you do want it to be the kind of movie that keeps you guessing until the very end as to the true identity of the killer.   Unlike the Jack the Ripper legend, Golem is easily recognizable in the very first instance the character is introduced.

Delirium (2018)— My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: After leaving the asylum and put in house arrest, Tom begins to believe the house is either haunted or he is hallucinating.  Most times, when we think about criminals, we wonder what could possible have prompted them to fall into a life of crime.

Look Away— my take on the movie with spoilers!

Plot Summary: A bullied girl switches places with her reflection. She soon regrets her decision as people start dying.  What matters most? Looks or confidence? When we see someone for the first time, we do notice their looks, the way they dress. Personality and their ability to initiate and hold a conversation comes second, doesn't it? Imagine meeting someone who is good looking but is dull to the core. Now imagine someone with average looks but is someone you can have fun with or have an intellectual conversation. Which seems more attractive? Look Away takes a very bold stand where appearances are concerned. But also about self-confidence. In the end, the only argument it makes is that one cannot possess both attributes. LOOK AWAY Movie Plot  We are introduced to a timid girl, Maria whose father is a plastic surgeon. Her mother is shown to have no say of her own. She is left to watch her husband ridicule his daughter about not being careful with her looks. Maria has a friend Lily
