Horror Book of the Week: The Haunting of Hangnail House By B.J. Conroy

This week’s Horror Book Recommendation is THE HAUNTING OF HANGNAIL HOUSE written by B.J. Conroy.

The book was published in May 2023 and sits on the bestseller list for Ghost Fiction.

The book has amassed positive reviews for it’s unique story, creepy scenes, and a satisfying ending.

Quick Review of The Haunting of Hangnail House based on the Sample

We are introduced to Kate and immediately sense that she is a woman of secrets. It is the way her character behaves and reacts that will make you wonder just what is going on with her.

And then there is Brett. Kate has seen him often at the cafe where she works and he always orders the same items on the menu. He is affable, a dedicated twitcher, and knows when to mind his own business.

Kate is right to be careful with a stranger, but the way the story flows, you begin to wonder about her past.

Their friendship is based on their mutual like for birdwatching and one day, after weeks of seeing each other, Brett invites her to go see the rare and elusive hangnail bird. To see that, they will have to go up to a house and stay there for a couple of days.

Initially, apprehensive, Kate gives in, wanting to see how far her friendship with Brett will go and if it has the potential to turn into something else.

Along the way, Kate is the only one who sees a woman dressed in an outdated fashion.

Is that woman real or a ghost?

Based on the title, something sure is about to happen once they are at the house.

The story flows well and the writing style definitely keeps you on the hook.

In spite of a slow start, and lack of horror scenes in the first chapter, it is the characters that will hold your attention and make you want to continue reading.

The Plot of The Haunting of Hangnail House By B.J. Conroy

Kate is drifting from town to town on the east coast of Australia, working at cafes. She forms a friendship with Brett, bonding over a love of nature. He claims to work online in technology, moving from place to place for birdwatching.

A birding trip to remote Hangnail House might allow them to deepen their relationship. Kate is happy to be spending time together, but Brett is anxious to spot the hangnail, a bird so rare that no images exist of it online.

Kate and Brett are about to discover that some things are best left unseen.

The Limehouse Golem- My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: When Elizabeth's husband is found dead, all fingers point to her. But is it really her or the work of a serial killer? If like me, you’ve read hundreds of mysteries and are enthused about Sherlock Holmes tales, THE LIMEHOUSE GOLEM is actually pretty predictable. Set in the Victorian Era, it promises to instil fear in you. Before Jack the Ripper, there was Golem- such is the tagline and you do want it to be the kind of movie that keeps you guessing until the very end as to the true identity of the killer.   Unlike the Jack the Ripper legend, Golem is easily recognizable in the very first instance the character is introduced.

Delirium (2018)— My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: After leaving the asylum and put in house arrest, Tom begins to believe the house is either haunted or he is hallucinating.  Most times, when we think about criminals, we wonder what could possible have prompted them to fall into a life of crime.

Look Away— my take on the movie with spoilers!

Plot Summary: A bullied girl switches places with her reflection. She soon regrets her decision as people start dying.  What matters most? Looks or confidence? When we see someone for the first time, we do notice their looks, the way they dress. Personality and their ability to initiate and hold a conversation comes second, doesn't it? Imagine meeting someone who is good looking but is dull to the core. Now imagine someone with average looks but is someone you can have fun with or have an intellectual conversation. Which seems more attractive? Look Away takes a very bold stand where appearances are concerned. But also about self-confidence. In the end, the only argument it makes is that one cannot possess both attributes. LOOK AWAY Movie Plot  We are introduced to a timid girl, Maria whose father is a plastic surgeon. Her mother is shown to have no say of her own. She is left to watch her husband ridicule his daughter about not being careful with her looks. Maria has a friend Lily
