Horror News of the Week: The Fall of the House of Usher Trailer Release. Prequel to Pet Sematary coming soon.
Shirley Jackson, Henry James, Christopher Pike, and now Edgar Allan Poe.
Mike Flanagan appears to be going through the popular works of famous horror authors.
The Haunting of Hill House was one of Mike Flanagan's biggest hit, followed by Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and The Midnight Club.
The show THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER was announced in October 2021. By January 31, 2022 filming had begun and by July 9th, the filming had been wrapped.
The Fall of the Usher story was about the narrator visiting his friend Roderick Usher. Roderick and his sister Madeline are the only surviving members of the Usher family. Madeline has a condition in which she falls into a cataleptic state.
One night she dies and Roderick uses the narrator's help in entombing her body. Shortly after, the two get increasingly paranoid until one night Madeline appears, having escaped the tomb.
Roderick is frightened by her appearance and dies. Madeline dies too. The narrator escapes, and behind him, the house breaks into two and sinks.
According to reports, the Netflix show will also include other works by Edgar Allan Poe although there is no confirmation on which stories the show would have taken inspiration from.
Based on the trailer, the story has been given a modern twist and the family is certainly larger.
We see familiar faces from Mike Flanagan's previous shows too!
The trailer doesn't reveal much about the contemporary twist and shows some of the characters dying gruesome deaths.
Something is killing them all and a woman seems to have the answer to it all.
The end of the trailer references Poe's famous poem The Raven. One of the characters keeps saying Nevermore...
Nevermore...
The show will premiere on October 12th and consist of eight episodes.
In other news…
Sometimes dead is better. But in Stephen King’s acclaimed novel PET SEMATARY, dead people coming back serves as an exciting horror movie.
The novel was released in 1983 following which a film adaptation was released in 1989. The movie did good business at the box office prompting a sequel titled PET SEMATARY TWO in 1992.
The sequel, however, was received poorly by critics who criticized the movie for not having a decent storyline nor a proper connection to the first part.
Pet Sematary then saw a second film adaptation in 2019. The movie received mixed reviews from critics but managed to rake up decent business at the box office in spite of facing competition.
Because of its success, a prequel was green-lit in 2021.
Titled PET SEMATARY: BLOODLINES, the movie will stream on Paramount+ on October 6th.
The trailer shows a young Jud Crandall, the very character who was neighbor to the Creed family and introduced Louis Creed to the ancient ritual ground called the Pet Sematary.
While Jud had advised Louis to bring back his daughter’s pet cat from the dead by burying the cat in the Pet Sematary, he had explicitly warned his neighbor about not burying people as they rarely came back all right.
And therefore the tagline: Sometimes dead is better.
In the trailer for the prequel, Jud is shown leaving town with his girlfriend when his car hits something. A tacky CGI bird flies off and the characters get out their car to see a dog watching them.
We then see the ancient burial ground along with David Duchovny’s character, dragging a body towards it.
A character called Timmy appears to be the center of the story. In the novel, Timmy was in the army when he was shot down by the Nazis. He was given a normal burial until one night his father Bill, buries Timmy in the Pet Sematary so that he can come back to life.
Of course, things go violently wrong which is why his story is used as a warning not to bury people in the Pet Sematary.
In the prequel, we will find out just how violent and frightening Timmy’s story really was and perhaps even find out more about the ancient burial ground that possesses the dark magic of the Wendigo.
The show also stars Henry Thomas, Samantha Mathis, and Jackson White.
