Halloween Movie Recommendations

It's that time of the year that horror fans everywhere look forward to.

Halloween is when the majority of horror movies are released around that time.

This year, there were several horror movies that proved to be profitable at the box office.

There were sequels from popular franchises and then there were indie films that left a lasting mark not only on the box office but viewers as well.

So far, 2023 has been an absolute delight for horror fans who were served a bouquet of movies.

But there were some movies that were hyped but didn't really impress. However, they still ended up raking up success at the box office.

Here are some horror movie recommendations (if you still haven't see them) for the perfect Halloween night.

1) Five Night at Freddy's

This has been the most anticipated movie of the year with fans on the videogame practically badgering the makers for any updates throughout the year.

When the movie finally released, it broke many box office records but failed to impress critics.

FIVE NIGHT AT FREDDY'S is about a security guard taking the job at an abandoned family entertainment center out of desperation. What he doesn't know is that when night comes, the animatronics come to life.

While the concept is interesting, the focus is on the protagonist and his desperation to find out what happened to his kidnapped brother that is the crux of the film.

The animatronics barely get enough time to be proper villains and much of the violence happens off-screen.  This was probably intentional so as to keep the rating PG-13 and attract more audience to the theatres.

There are barely enough scares and the characters never appear to be in actual threat.

That said, Five Night at Freddy's ticks all the boxes for a family fun movie night. It is entertaining but don't expect any scares.

 2) Saw X

This has got to be the most gripping and tense movie in the entire series.

For the first time, John Kramer is at the center of the movie and we see his desperation in trying to heal from his ailment. He puts his trust in an experimental treatment only to be betrayed. This causes him to show the con artists the error of their ways in the most gruesome manner.

Saw X can be difficult to watch but you will also not want to look away. John Kramer is given a human side and the real villain turns out to be someone else.

There are traps aplenty and difficult choices with terrible consequences. Blood pours copiously but there is that edge-of-the-seat quality about it that is hard to ignore.

Saw X is a definite must-watch for this season.

3) The Exorcist: Believer

The movie served as a direct sequel to the 1973 movie which means that we had to wait fifty years for a sequel that barely did justice to the concept.

To be fair, The Exorcist: Believer starts off on a strong note with the two girls, Angela and Katherine reported missing only to return and display odd behavior.

Soon enough the parents realize that their daughters are possessed and so bring in the experts, including Chris (  Ellen Burstyn )from the first movie who is estranged from her daughter Reagan following the success of her memoir.

But poor Chris suffers a major disservice and is subjected to a quick and violent attack which blinds her and removes her from the important exorcism scenes.

There is family drama galore and little in terms of scares which makes this a tepid fare.

However, if you are a fan of the The Exorcist series, you won't want to miss this one simply because it exists in the franchise.

4) The Nun II

One of the top grossers in horror films this year, NUN II had a promising trailer but the movie itself is lukewarm at best.

The Nun 2 follows the events of the first movie. Sister Irene is now in Italy but Valak is not done with his work just yet. Sister Irene is pretty much ordered to help defeat Valak once again.

The Nun 2 suffers from a slow pace and doesn’t make proper use of its villain. It feels as if the makers are afraid to push the envelope and truly show what the demon is capable of. Instead it shows the demon trying to alert people of its presence using collages.

But the Nun 2 is an improvement over the first one at least. THE NUN had a weak storyline and maybe just one frightening scene.

The Nun 2 may be low on scares but has a decent storyline.

5) Talk To Me

This year's surprise hit was an indie movie that gained a lot of attention from horror fans and critics.

Talk to Me is about a group of friends using an embalmed hand to talk to the dead. Things go awry when the rules of the game are not followed which unleashes terror into the real world.

The movie starts off very strong and is carried on the strong shoulders of the cast who perform remarkably well.

The third act may be convoluted but the movie is a must-watch for all horror fans who enjoy being spooked and getting nightmares.

Which one was your favorite this year?
