Horror Weekly News: Founders Day killer on loose this January. New Blumhouse horror movie trailer drops.
Founders day may be a few months away but that doesn’t mean that horror filmmakers are not going to use it as a central theme for a slasher movie.
Yes, politics can too be a core theme for horror movies. Nothing scary than real world issues, is there?
Directed by Erik Bloomquist, FOUNDER’S DAY tells the story of a small town called Fairwood, gripped with violence as a serial killer targets kids.
In the trailer, we see a girl called Lily closing up the theater but is surprised by the lobby song playing on the screen. Unfortunately, the jingle is so catchy that she doesn’t notice a man in a mask and white hair wig, standing right behind her. The mask is supposed to look like one of the founding fathers.
The girl is brutally killed leading to the running candidates of the mayor election to use it to their advantage. We see one of the candidates, incite people and get them to side with her. There is teen drama, a police officer enjoying her lollipop and romances that may probably not be approved by parents.
In the middle of it all, the serial killer goes after the teens one after the other.
Just who is the killer and why is it going after high school kids?
FOUNDER’S DAY was released in recent film festivals and has already managed to garner some positive reviews. Critics praised the social commentary and the inventive slasher scenes. However, some critics noted that the acting was not all that consistent and stood out.
FOUNDERS DAY is written by Erik Bloomquist and Carson Bloomquist. The movie stars Naomi Grace, Devin Druid, and Amy Hargreaves.
FOUNDER’S DAY will release on January 19th 2024.
In other news…
Meet Chauncey. He’s a cute and cuddly bear who can be your next best friend. He will play all sorts of fun games with, even one where you have to hurt yourself. Don’t worry, it’s on the list of other fun activities you can do.
In other words, be extra careful around toys. There may be several horror movies with villainous and serial killer dolls, but now here’s a teddy bear that looks so harmless you wouldn’t suspect it of doing anything dangerous at all.
Blumhouse’s newest horror movie is about a woman returning to her childhood home with a girl called Alice who immediately goes into the basement to find a toy that was left behind.
Enter Chauncey, who sits like an innocent teddy bear but happens to movie his head ever so slightly every now and then.
In the trailer, we see Jessica roam around her childhood home with Alice and promises that her happy place can be her happy place as well. In the next instant, Alice is already playing with Chauncey, who she says was left behind.
At first, Jessica is obviously relieved that Alice is distracted and playing a harmless scavenger hunt with the teddy. In all fairness, she should have seen the scavenger hunt list before she let Alice play by herself. The last item on the list is for Alice to find something to hurt herself with. And so, shockingly, Alice bangs her arm on a nail.
In the next scene, Alice is talking to a therapist and she claims that Chauncey told her to do so because if she completed a list, she will get to go to a place that Chauncey is from.
Soon enough, Alice must realize that Chauncey is dangerous and screams at him that she cannot be friends with him anymore. What she doesn’t know is that evil toys don’t like to break up with kids.
Jessica realizes Alice has disappeared and like in every horror movie about killer toys, seeks advice from an old woman who tells her about entities that are mentioned in every culture and how they tether to the young. They are called imaginary friends but are really scary entities.
There’s a frantic search for Alice, teens getting the bratty treatment from Alice and a lot of scenes in dark rooms.
At the end of the trailer, we see a teen trying to befriend Chauncey to amuse Alice only to be told that the bear does not want to be friends. It seems the teen still seeks out the bear who has a sheet over it.
The second it draws near, it morphs into a vicious beast.
The trailer doesn’t really offer a fresh take on killer toys but as it is from Blumhouse, it is guaranteed to be an entertaining movie.
Lately, it seems Blumhouse is keen to start a franchise but has yet to see a successful and popular movie villain. Hopefully, Chauncey may start a new franchise.
IMAGINARY is directed by Jeff Wadlow, and is written by Greg Erb, Bryce McGuire, and Jason Oremland. The movie stars DeWanda Wise, Pyper Braun, and Matthew Soto.
IMAGINARY is set to release in theatres on March 8th, 2024.
