Horror Book of the Week: I Found Christmas Lights Slithering Up My Street by Ben Farthing

This week’s Horror Book Recommendation is I Found Christmas Lights Slithering Up My Street written by Ben Farthing. Published in December 2023, this book is on the bestsellers list for U.S. Horror Fiction and Horror Suspense.

Customers who bought this book were already fans of the author’s work and found this to be another engrossing read. They described the book as unsettling, emotional and thrilling.

Quick Book Review of I Found Christmas Lights Slithering Up My Street based on sample

Douglas is setting up Christmas decorations around his house. His friend David and his friend Harold are helping him set it up. It is established that something tragic has happened in Douglas’ family but we don’t get to find out  what it is just yet.

Douglas has been borrowing decorations from his neighbors, and sometimes even resorting to stealing them, just so he can reinstate the Christmas spirit in his parents again.

That is when he notices the lights coming from the sewer drain near his house. The scene is quite reminiscent of the famous scene from the horror novel IT. But instead of a creepy clown, Douglas spots a string of Christmas lights. He is overjoyed as he imagines wrapping them all around the house.

But his joy is short-lived when he also sees carolers in the drain. There is something off about them and he is completely freaked out.

The author’s writing style pulls you into the story immediately although it seems to be stumbling at first when he tries to describe the lights from the storm drain.

For a few paragraphs, the author seems to be trying to find his footing but in a few pages, the story roars ahead and you will find yourself completely enraptured by it.

And before you know it, there is already a creepy scene to give you the chills.

I Found Christmas Lights Slithering Up My Street is a long title but it is part of the author’s I Found Horror series and just like his previous work, this book will show you how something innocuous can be frightening in a matter of seconds.

Something festive is growing in the sewer...

After last year’s tragedy, Douglas’ parents are ignoring Christmas.

But when Douglas finds an eerie strand of lights slithering through the sewer, he unwittingly unleashes merry terror upon his neighborhood’s tacky lights contest. String lights spread like invasive kudzu, turning festive decorations into surreal, predatory nightmares.

Determined not to lose both Christmas and his family forever, Douglas gathers his courage to confront the source of the holiday horror: deep in the concrete pipes beneath the street.

The Limehouse Golem- My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: When Elizabeth's husband is found dead, all fingers point to her. But is it really her or the work of a serial killer? If like me, you’ve read hundreds of mysteries and are enthused about Sherlock Holmes tales, THE LIMEHOUSE GOLEM is actually pretty predictable. Set in the Victorian Era, it promises to instil fear in you. Before Jack the Ripper, there was Golem- such is the tagline and you do want it to be the kind of movie that keeps you guessing until the very end as to the true identity of the killer.   Unlike the Jack the Ripper legend, Golem is easily recognizable in the very first instance the character is introduced.

Delirium (2018)— My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: After leaving the asylum and put in house arrest, Tom begins to believe the house is either haunted or he is hallucinating.  Most times, when we think about criminals, we wonder what could possible have prompted them to fall into a life of crime.

Look Away— my take on the movie with spoilers!

Plot Summary: A bullied girl switches places with her reflection. She soon regrets her decision as people start dying.  What matters most? Looks or confidence? When we see someone for the first time, we do notice their looks, the way they dress. Personality and their ability to initiate and hold a conversation comes second, doesn't it? Imagine meeting someone who is good looking but is dull to the core. Now imagine someone with average looks but is someone you can have fun with or have an intellectual conversation. Which seems more attractive? Look Away takes a very bold stand where appearances are concerned. But also about self-confidence. In the end, the only argument it makes is that one cannot possess both attributes. LOOK AWAY Movie Plot  We are introduced to a timid girl, Maria whose father is a plastic surgeon. Her mother is shown to have no say of her own. She is left to watch her husband ridicule his daughter about not being careful with her looks. Maria has a friend Lily
