Quick Movie Review: A Creature Was Stirring

Plot: It's Christmas time and Faith is taking care of Charm who has a mysterious affliction. Two strangers show up and chaos ensues.

Everyone has secrets. When people have something they feel guilty about, those secrets can be damaging to one's mental state.

A Creature Was Stirring is one of those movies that have an unexpected twist but unfortunately the plot doesn’t really come together once the reveal comes to play.

The story is about a nurse, Faith, who is trying to leave but is stuck in the house during a blizzard with her daughter who is running fever.

The daughter, Charm, comes off as angsty and bratty. She doesn't seem to appreciate her mother's concern towards her.

Faith is deathly nervous and things get complicated when two strangers practically break into the house.

At first, the siblings Liz and Kory come off as intruders but then they turn out to be harmless people...almost.

There is a lot of talk of religion and it can be uncomfortable to watch but at least this part is redeemed when the movie comes to an end.

In the meantime, there is a creature roaming about the house who may be the father or something else. There is the possibility that Charm may be a helpless captive that the two strangers can save.

But it is Faith's secret that is the most dangerous of all.

Now here's the thing about the ending: it is a good one. A surprising one as well. You'll think that you definitely didn’t see it coming.

But that's because there are so many things that are not explained.

Spoiler alert: If Kory and Liz were only in Faith's imagination, part of her guilt, how is it that we are shown their parts?

Was it all Faith instead of Kory or Liz? Even when we see the two of them talking to each other?
Or why does she imagine hitting Kory with a bat?

Poor Charm seems to be real but instead of dealing with a strange affliction was possibly being drugged by her mother to the point that in her unstable state, she jumps out the window, lands on the branches and has tons of snow dumped on her.

When the snow finally thaws during spring time, Charm's body is disfigured and it looks really creepy.

Faith seems to come off her hallucinations. Does it mean she stopped taking the drugs? How did she suddenly become lucid?

A Creature Was Stirring turns out to be the guilt in a person that manifests into crazy hallucinations.

The acting is good all around. The lighting is putting off at first but makes sense towards the end when it is revealed that Faith was probably on a psychedelic trip.

This is an interesting addition to psychological horror but the story clearly needed more work.

A Creature Was Stirring is available for streaming.
