Short Horror Film Review: Slenderman

Plot: A woman is forced to face her childhood fear of the Slenderman one night.

Monsters are not real.

That's what we are told when we were kids and frightened after having a nightmare.

We were comforted with that knowledge that monsters do not exist.

But what if they did?

 SLENDERMAN Plot

The short begins with a woman walking in the middle of the night and coming across a dark figure.

She manages to make a run to the comfort of her home where she gets into her bed and looks at her diary.

In her diary she has drawn the Slenderman and written several times that HE IS NOT REAL.

This is a way to reassure herself that the supernatural being is not real.

Unfortunately for her, the Slenderman has entered her home and bedroom. She tries to hide under her blanket and keep repeating that the Slenderman is not real. Every time she uncovers her head though, Slenderman keeps popping up around her bed.

Spooked, she keeps a knife ready by her bedside but doesn't get to use it. Slenderman attacks her and she drops her knife. Slenderman mocks her as she grows frightened until she decides she has had enough.

The woman then screams out that yes he is real but that she is not afraid of him.

Slenderman is strangling her but when he senses that the woman is truly not afraid of him, he lets go and vanishes.

Later, the woman scribbles out the word "Not" in her diary. Slenderman is real but she is not afraid of him.

The movie ends.

What we can learn from this movie is to face your fears instead of living in denial. What we fear is real even if it is just for us. But refusing to believe in fear is not a way to deal with it healthily.

The only way to overcome fear successfully is to face it and acknowledge it. One can only move past fear is by accepting it first.

The movie is obviously made on a low budget but it effectively sends a message that it needs to.

Jiya Kapur's films does have elements of horror but the ending always sends a positive message and makes you feel safe at the end of a scary ride.
