Best Horror Books of 2023

2023 was a great year for horror fans. There may have been plenty of TV shows and movies, but this year, we were also treated to a variety of horror books to suit every taste.

There was historical horror fiction that made the bestsellers list, and horror comedies that made us chuckle and spooked at the same time. Young readers also got a few books to scare them into having nightmares.

Horror was intermixed with mystery and there were several haunted house books. There was something for every horror fan out there and it was interesting and reassuring to know that after all this time, people not only picked up books but also wanted to discuss and analyze them.

On a personal note, I too was able to find some gems in the vast sea of horror fiction and found several I enjoyed reading. While I still try to finish reading them, I also found some books I added to my library and will be getting to them soon this year.

Here are the Top 10 Horror Books of 2023:

1) How To Sell A Haunted House by Grady Hendrix

Released in January 2023, HOW TO SELL A HAUNTED HOUSE became a quick favorite of horror fans because of its moving plot and genuine haunting scenes. Some of the complaints horror fans usually harbor is the lack of frightening scenes in ‘haunted-houses’ books. But this novel does not disappoint and is actually one of those books you will consider reading again once you’ve read the last page.

This novel still sits on the bestsellers list for Ghost Thrillers and is a favorite among Facebook Groups dedicated to Horror Novels, and book clubs.

2) Holly by Stephen King

The protagonist may have made her introduction in Stephen King’s previous books, but here she gets her turn to shine.

HOLLY was released in September 2023 and while it received acclaim it was also criticized for being a little too political.

However, the book comes from the mind of Stephen King and so obviously, it is hard to put down. The mystery is gripping and readers have found that the serial killers depicted in the novel are truly horrifying,

The book still sits on the bestsellers list for Suspense Thriller and is a must read for every Stephen King fan.

The Limehouse Golem- My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: When Elizabeth's husband is found dead, all fingers point to her. But is it really her or the work of a serial killer? If like me, you’ve read hundreds of mysteries and are enthused about Sherlock Holmes tales, THE LIMEHOUSE GOLEM is actually pretty predictable. Set in the Victorian Era, it promises to instil fear in you. Before Jack the Ripper, there was Golem- such is the tagline and you do want it to be the kind of movie that keeps you guessing until the very end as to the true identity of the killer.   Unlike the Jack the Ripper legend, Golem is easily recognizable in the very first instance the character is introduced.

Delirium (2018)— My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: After leaving the asylum and put in house arrest, Tom begins to believe the house is either haunted or he is hallucinating.  Most times, when we think about criminals, we wonder what could possible have prompted them to fall into a life of crime.

Look Away— my take on the movie with spoilers!

Plot Summary: A bullied girl switches places with her reflection. She soon regrets her decision as people start dying.  What matters most? Looks or confidence? When we see someone for the first time, we do notice their looks, the way they dress. Personality and their ability to initiate and hold a conversation comes second, doesn't it? Imagine meeting someone who is good looking but is dull to the core. Now imagine someone with average looks but is someone you can have fun with or have an intellectual conversation. Which seems more attractive? Look Away takes a very bold stand where appearances are concerned. But also about self-confidence. In the end, the only argument it makes is that one cannot possess both attributes. LOOK AWAY Movie Plot  We are introduced to a timid girl, Maria whose father is a plastic surgeon. Her mother is shown to have no say of her own. She is left to watch her husband ridicule his daughter about not being careful with her looks. Maria has a friend Lily
