Horror Book of the Week: Bloody Mary by Belle Zimet
If you have always been enchanted by the legend of Bloody Mary, you will enjoy this week’s Horror Book pick.
This week’s Horror Book Recommendation is BLOODY MARY (URBAN LEGENDS SERIES 1) written by Belle Zimet.
The book is the first one in the Urban Legends series that also includes stories about the Ghost Ship and The Black-Eyed children.
Bloody Mary is on the bestsellers list for Occult Ghosts & Haunted Houses as well as Ghost Fiction.
The book was published in August 2020 and has since then garnered positive reviews by readers who found the story gripping and the characters absolutely relatable.
Although the readers found this story to be creepy, some thought that the ending was too rushed and didn’t clarify what happened to some of the characters.
Quick Review of BLOODY MARY based on the sample
The year is 2009 and Kat is with her friends Kayla, Erik, and Juniper. They are enjoying each other’s company and take a few pills to have a good time.
Conversation quickly turns to the occult and Juniper claims she has seen a ghost in her house since she was a young girl. She claims to have seen a woman who was nice in the beginning, only to turn antagonistic when Juniper told her parents about her.
Kayla suggests they play around with the Ouija board and soon enough they come into contact with a spirit who seems to want Erik.
After the friends stop playing and start feeling the effects of the pills they had taken earlier, Juniper demands they play the Bloody Mary game.
Although Kayla is against the idea and believes Juniper’s sudden change in behavior is due to the pills, Kat agrees to play the game only to appease her friend.
Kat plays the game without incident but something happens to Juniper which causes her to want to claw her eyes out.
Years later, Kat is a successful blogger who has returned to town for her reunion. She is apprehensive about reconnecting with her friends after the incident but still meets with them.
Before that, she meets a stranger at the hotel called Ian who is a blogger too and chases the paranormal.
The writing is engaging and the author stays on point of the story. Kat shows character development in the very next chapter. She goes from being a teenager who is in awe of her popular friend who also wants to do whatever her friends ask of her, to being this confident woman who approaches men and flirts with them.
The story is definitely compelling and since the theme is on Bloody Mary, no doubt the story will turn towards its own retelling of what happened to Mary that turned her into such a hostile and vengeful woman.
Bloody Mary is definitely a recommended book for horror fans.
