Horror News: Munjya Trailer Drop
After Stree, Roohi, and Bhediya, it is now time to introduce another character from the Indian folklore, Munjya.
Dinesh Vijan's latest offering from his horror comedy universe is a tale about Munja, a tormentor ghost, as he is known.
According to the legend, when a young boy between the ages of 8 and 13, finishes a ritual that introduces him to religion and has a sacred thread tied around him, he becomes at risk of becoming a ghost if he dies within 10 days of the ceremony.
The ghost is said to haunt Peepal trees, and should anyone misbehave around it,or throw stones at the tree, or consume alcohol under it, the Munja will haunt that person.
It was earlier reported that Dinesh Vijan of Maddock Films was producing a prequel to the successful Stree that was released in 2018.
However, it is now reported that Munjya is a separate story in the horror-comedy universe. Although,Bhediya did have a link to the movie Stree as shown in the ending scene. Perhaps Munjya may still be connected to the movie Stree.
So far, the tentative date for Stree 2 is August 30th but is yet to be confirmed.
In the recently dropped trailer for Munjya, we see a village and a voice-over explaining the legend of Munja who wanted to marry a girl called Munni. But before he could get married, he died.
Ever since then, he has been waiting for his descendant so that he can use him to complete his last wish.
Now, by descendant, it probably means someone from the family is not directly related to Munja since he never married.
We then see our hero who encounters the CGI demon who resembles Gollum from the Lord of the Rings.
The hero may have been touched by the demon because a sparkling handprint on his back glows.
He is on the bus, travelling with his mother when a woman seated at the front accuses the hero of pinching her. The hero denies it and turns to see Munjya lurking at the back.
The hero's friends notice a change in his character but cannot understand what is wrong with him.
It isn't long before the hero realizes that he is the only one who can see the demon. His crush believes he may be on drugs and he has a hard time convincing everyone that he is normal.
Eventually he goes to an Exorcist who charges an exorbitant sum that his mother isn't ready to pay.
Desperate to rid himself of the haunting, the hero travels to the village where Munjya may be from. He does so without informing his mother.
His mother finds out and isn't too happy. She doesn't want him to go to the village because she suspects the people there practice black magic.
The hero goes through a lot of trouble once he visits the tree that is home to the demon.
The roots shoot out and capture him and he tries hard to rid himself of it.
An old woman, also friends with the hero's mother, may have a solution to the problem. Munjya does seem to be scared of her.
The movie is directed by Aditya Sarpotdar and stars Abhay Varma, Sharvari Wagh, Mona Singh, and Suhas Joshi.
MUNJYA will release on June 7th.
