Top 10 Moments from Barbarian (2022)
Barbarian was one of the most successful and critically acclaimed movie of 2022. Here are some of the best moments from the movie that shaped the story.
1) And so it begins: One rainy night, Tess arrives at 467 Barbary Street and parks in front of a house. She has booked an Airbnb here. But guess what? It was double-booked by none other than one of the executive producer’s of the movie, Bill SkarsgÃ¥rd.
He plays Keith who is super apologetic and super nice to her which Tess’ makes instantly doubt him. Because people are simply not that nice anymore.
He lets her stay the night and gains her trust resulting in Tess developing a crush on him.
2) There's something in the basement: In the morning, Tess goes to her meeting and when she returns, she is accosted by a mad man telling her to get out of here. Once inside, Tess does a bit of sneaking around and comes across a hole in the wall of the basement. Why are basements always the creepiest part of houses in Horror movies?
This basement is stuff nightmares are made of. She finds dirty mattresses and cameras set up. What is worrying is the bloody handprint on the wall.
After Tess gets locked up in the basement, she calls Keith for help who doesn’t believe the basement is creepy.
3) No, there's actually someone in the basement: The basement tunnels are creepy. Keith goes missing in the tunnels and when Tess goes to look for him, she finds Keith crawling towards her.
He tells her someone is there with him.
We get our first glimpse of the creature as she smashes Keith’s head against the wall.
4) Another character joins the party: We don’t get to find out what happened to Tess just yet.
Meet AJ who is driving a convertible and living his dreams. His pilot has just been picked up. What could go wrong now?
The Me Too movement. AJ has been accused of harassing the actress who is working on the show. AJ is promptly fired from his own show. In order to pay for legal expenses, he decides to sell off his properties.
One of his houses is the one he has put up on AirBnB. The very house Tess and Keith were staying at.
5) There is more to the house than he thought: AJ doesn’t find anyone at the house but does find some things left behind. He goes into the basement and realizes his property may be larger than he thought. That means there is the possibility of more money coming in for him. He starts measuring the floor, not caring about the cameras and the blood on the mattress and walls. That is when he comes across the creature.
He falls into a pit during the chase and finds Tess very much alive. She tells him to not scream and explains the creature is pretending to be a mother and that they were supposed to be her babies.
The creature comes to feed her “babies” but AJ isn’t ready to be babied just yet.
6) Another character intro but he is from the 1980s: A flashback explains how a man called Frank who lived in the house prior to AJ buying it, would kidnap women and do despicable things to them. The result was the creature who has been inbred.
7) Side characters don't get a chance: Back to the present, the creature gets pissed off when AJ doesn’t take his feedings. He uses this as distraction to escape. Tess and him barely make it out alive and find an ally on the man who has previously warned Tess.
In a matter of minutes, just as he has pledged to help him, he is killed by the creature.
8) AJ meets another resident in the basement: Tess must return into the house to get her car keys in order to escape the area. AJ wanders about in the tunnels of the house and finds Frank very much alive. He has recordings of the terrible things he did to his victims. AJ calls him sick even though he isn’t an innocent himself.
Turns out AJ was rightfully accused by the actress.
Frank has a gun which he uses to shoot himself. AJ arms himself with that gun only to accidentally shoot Tess.
9) AJ is up to his tricks: Tess is luck to have been shot on the side. They later manage to climb a tower only for the creature to follow them. AJ gets so nervous, he drops the gun. But he does have another plan.
And that plan includes Tess toppling down from the tower.
10) Time for the finale: The plan works because the creature jumps to save Tess. AJ climbs down and thinks the creature is dead. He apologizes to Tess who he thinks is dead too. The creature gets up to poke his eyes in and smash his head in.
Tess awakens and although she feels sorry for the creature, she shoots her and crawls away to safety.
