Abigail (2024)-- My take on the movie with spoilers!
Plot: Six criminals are brought together to kidnap a little girl, unaware that she isn't an ordinary girl.
Finally, a good and entertaining horror movie.
This will most likely be your first thought while you are watching this movie.
It's funny, scary, thrilling and the kind of movie where you aren't sure who to root for.
The cast has chemistry, the story has pace and the ending is satisfying to say the very least.
Abigail should be on your list of movies you definitely watch this year.
ABIGAIL Movie Plot
The movie begins with a little girl doing ballet. Abigail, that's her name, is doing a perfect routine as she practices for a recital.
Behind the stage, there are three criminals, waiting and planning.
They were picked up one by one in a van, and no names are used. They have never met each other before and only have instructions on how to kidnap the girl. They refer to the girl as Tiny Dancer since they don't even know her name.
Abigail is done with her practice session and heads on outside. As she is resting, three of the six criminals, grab her. Abigail fights back and it is the woman who manages to subdue the girl by injecting her. She also stops a man from hurting the girl.
They manage to get her into the van where three other criminals find the perfect route to make their escape.
They head to a mansion where they were told to go and chain up the girl in a room before meeting a man called Lambert who immediately confiscates their phones.
So yes, one horror movie trope is added to the movie.
Lambert tells them that they must remain in the mansion for twenty four hours and keep an eye on the girl. Each of them are going to make millions and have only to babysit the girl.
One of them asks why they cannot know each other names. Lambert names them all. So we have Joey, Frank, Rickles, Sammy, Peter and Dean.
Only Joey is allowed to go to Abigail since Lambert wants the blindfolded girl to hear only one voice.
The six then get to drinking and trying to guess each other's true identity. Joey is the one who tries to show off. She guesses that Dean, although good at his job, is not a professional. She guesses Peter is the muscle and may have been a bouncer. She doesn't make a guess about Rickles because he doesn't have money to play the game.
She guesses Sammy comes from money and does criminal activity for fun.
She then guesses that Frank was an ex-cop and a possible detective but probably got mixed in with the wrong crowd and doesn't work for the law anymore.
Frank counters that Joey was a junkie and probably not an available mother for her kid. He makes that guess based on her affinity for eating candy every few minutes to subdue her cravings for something else.
Pissed, Joey heads to check on Abigail, and gains her trust be removing her blindfold. Joey makes sure to cover her face though. She comforts the frightened girl and pinky promises that she will not let anyone harm her.
Abigail tells her that her father does not care for her and will not pay the ransom money but Joey doesn't believe her. Just before she leaves, Abigail tells her she is sorry for what is about to happen to her.
Rattled by this threat, Joey goes to talk to the others and asks if they know whose Abigail's father is.
None of them know. Frank gets curious and goes to check on her and unfortunately walks into the room without covering his face.
Frank freaks out and tries horribly to hide his face when he sees Abigail staring at him without a mask. He puts a gun to her head and demands to know who her father is.
She replies with Kristof Lazar. Frank exits the room, picks up his jacket and bids adieu to the others.
He's like, nope, I'm outta here.
Joey demands to know why he's so nervous. When Frank drops Lazar's name, everyone is shocked except for Sammy who has not heard of the name.
So she, along with us, are told who Kristof Lazar is. Apparently he's the underworld criminal boss who is likened to the Antichrist.
Frank had worked undercover and Lazar's hitman Valdez had killed four of his fellow officers. Their deaths were brutal.
Peter also decides to leave but when they try to open the front door, it is locked.
Meanwhile, Dean who is obsessed with Sammy tries to get her attention by first spooking her in her room while she is watching cartoons. Sammy is obviously not interested and throws him out.
Dean hears sounds in the kitchen and goes downstairs but something attacks him and drags him. Another horror movie trope.
When Sammy comes downstairs, she sees Dean sitting with his back to her. She approaches him and pop, his head falls off.
Everyone comes downstairs and wonder what kind of animal could have done this. They speculate that Valdez is here to take them down. And since the house is now locked, they are in so much trouble.
Rickles and Joey are sitting at the bar when he suggests that Frank may be Valdez as he was the only survivor in the attack on the officers from years ago.
Rickles tells Joey that he only trusts her and that since Frank may be taking them all down to increase his share of the ransom money, they should take him down.
As Joey turns away to look for the others to possibly get rid of them too, she hears a sound. She turns to find Rickles staggering and then collapsing. Someone has taken a bite of him as well.
Everyone is alerted and guns are pointed at each other as Joey tells everyone that Frank is Valdez because that is what Abigail told her.
Frank is furious that a little girl managed to get into her head and turn them all against each other. He decides to kill her and then escape.
Joey isn't happy about it because she pinky-promised Abigail that she would let no harm come to her.
Frank barges into the room and is getting ready to kill her when Joey tries to defend Abigail.
Peter is screaming about somewhere while Sammy is by the door, watching the drama.
Abigail, almost on the verge of tears, wants to know what is happening. While everyone is arguing, Sammy notices Abigail calmly removing her handcuffs while contorting her hands.
Sammy finally gets everyone's attention by screaming "Guys!" When Abigail gets up and stands before him. That is when she bares her monstrous teeth.
Everyone is shocked and scared as Abigail reveals that she is a vampire and everyone assumes she was Valdez who had decapitated her enemies.
They manage to run and lock the door in time.
Realizing that they are all trapped with a vampire, they wonder if Lambert knew about this.
Frank comes up with a brilliant idea to kill the vampire. Joey doesn't agree. She wants Abigail alive so they can trade her for their lives.
Frank gets Sammy and Peter to agree with her. They all brainstorm on how to defeat a vampire.
They refer to Twilight for knowledge. Peter has a cross he decides to use. Sammy wants to use garlic and Frank decides to use stakes.
Since it is still night, they can't use sunlight to their advantage.
Sammy has never cooked so she can't tell onions from garlic which angers Frank who realizes he has to do everything himself.
The three look for Abigail in her room but she had long escaped. She is downstairs, practicing her ballet routine with Dean's headless body.
The trio lunge at her. Sammy's garlic trick fails miserably because Abigail sniffs lovingly at garlic before tossing it away.
Peter is stabbed with his own cross and Frank is also stabbed through the leg with a stake. The three manage to escape and Abigail doesn't really give much chase.
Joey is smug when Frank comes limping to her. He warns her not to say I told you so. Joey keeps her mouth shut but helps Frank with his wounds.
Joey then tells them that Abigail cannot be taken down easily and they will have to set a trap for her. She tells them that Abigail's pulse did get slow when she used a tranquillizer.
The others agree to give it one more shot.
Frank goes in with a gun and shoots Abigail in the head but she recovers quickly. The others have a tough time holding down the tiny Dancer and as luck would have it, just like in most movies, the tranquillizer is kicked out of Joey's hands at the last minute. And it goes through a grill and her fingers can barely touch it.
Joey still manages and finally Abigail is injected. She goes down but not before she but Sammy.
Sammy is terrified that she will turn into a vampire too now.
Abigail is put in a cage. She wakes up and is hardly worried about her state. She tells them that she was the one who brought them here as revenge since they indirectly impacted her father's business.
Sammy is actually Jessica who stole her parent's money and ran away. She also stole money from Lazar's subsidiary. Peter was muscle for a gang who had also caused problems for Lazar's subsidiary.
Then there's Frank whose undercover operations messed up Lazar's operations. Lastly there is Joey who used to work as a medic for the army, got addicted to morphine and had to work treating criminals. She nicked a criminal's artery while high. The criminal was one of Lazar's closest aide.
Abigail also tells them that there was never any money. Everyone's face drops as they had made plans how to spend their 7 million dollars.
They all decide to make a run for it. Frank thinks Abigail has hinted at a secret room and thinks Agatha Christie's And Then They Were None is a clue since Abigail used that phrase. He pulls out the book with fanfare only to be embarrassed when nothing happens.
Abigail, meanwhile, has ripped open the cage. Joey and Frank have teamed up to find a way out while Peter and Sammy are the other team.
Soon enough, Sammy starts to feel peculiar. She grasps her throat as her voice falters and she hears Abigail's command. She's completely under Abigail's influence and tricks Peter before attacking and killing him.
She tries the same trick on Joey and Frank but Joey realizes something is up. They run and when Sammy blocks their path, Joey, who had previously ripped off boards to let sunlight in and ward Abigail off, uses a tray to reflect sunlight.
Sammy explodes and chunks and blood splatters everywhere.
Joey and Frank eventually find the secret entrance by chance and see Lambert inside with a feral expression. He's a vampire too and working for Abigail since two years. But he no longer wants to be her slave. He entices Frank into joining him, deciding that Joey will be of no use to him.
ABIGAIL Ending Explained
Frank lets Lambert bite him. He then drinks his blood and vomits it. But the transformation is complete. He immediately attacks Lambert causing him to blow up. He turns towards Joey who runs away.
Abigail comes into the picture too and they decide that they will have to work together to thwart Frank's plans to take over the criminal empire.
Plus there was a pinky promise involved and a sweet moment where Abigail wants to know more about Joey's son whom she calls Justin even though his name is Caleb.
Frank, amped up with vampire strength, attacks Joey and has her speared through and pinned to the wall.
He attacks Abigail and she becomes weak. He then pulls Joey towards him and bites her, hoping to turn her and become his puppet.
Of course that doesn't work because as Abigail points out when she wakes up, it takes time to perfect Vampire powers.
They stake Frank together and he explodes with such force that Joey is thrown back.
Abigail lets Joey walk away and tells her to be a good mother to Justin. She tells her his name is Caleb. Abigail already knows that.
Her expression changes however when she spots a man behind Joey.
It's her father Lazar. He's come to find out what is going on with his daughter.
Abigail tries to impress him by saying that she took down his enemies for him. He's not that impressed. She tells him that Joey saved his life.
Lazar lets Joey go.
She walks out, covered in blood. She sits down and finds a candy in her packet. Some moments back, she thought she had run out. She enjoys her treat as she drives off.
The movie ends.
Abigail is a fun horror movie, and while it doesn't shy away from using the usual horror movie tropes, it does make good use of them so that they are enjoyable.
It also helps that the cast does a good job with the material.
Abigail is a must-watch for all horror fans.
