Quick Book Review of I FOUND A LOST HALLWAY IN A DYING MALL

The first line of the book will grab your attention immediately. It’s about a mannequin’s head dragging against the floor of the mall.

Now, we have all been to malls that haven’t seen enough business and you know will close down soon. We’ve also seen mannequins and creeped out by their lack of facial features. Yes, they are great for modelling clothes but they are also faceless and still, and posed awkwardly sometimes.

So when you read the first line, these eerie images immediately pop in your mind and you know you are about to be drawn into a really scary story.

Lisa, who is the assistant manager, is taking a walk around the mall with Hank, discussing whether or not to move when Lisa runs into a retired employee of the mall. He clearly has dementia and Lisa wants to help him.

That is when Lisa notices a mannequin moving about, and even turning around to face her, as if it can actually listen.

Lisa’s ex-co worker Saswin is clearly in need of help and so Lisa calls for help.

The author uses imagery to deliver a chilling story that creeps up on you. While the beginning may be a little all over the place, once the story focuses on Saswin and Lisa, it finally gains pace.

Farthing’s choice of words creates an indelible impression and a palpable sense of dread that you cannot easily shake off. The characters are relatable and the story is packed with enough terrifying twists and turns to keep your attention.

To Read or Not to Read?

Ben Farthing’s I Found a Lost Hallway in a Dying Mall is an entertaining book and since it is short, the story doesn’t waste time in getting right to the creepy bits.

The story is engaging and the writing is descriptive and flows well. It is one of those books I would definitely want to read more of.
