Horror News: Mike Flanagan to helm new Exorcist project. Popular 2013 sci-fi thriller gets a follow-up movie.
Reputed horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan has been tasked with expanding The Exorcist universe.
It was earlier reported that Blumhouse Productions had planned THE EXORCIST trilogy with the first one being The Exorcist: Believer followed by the sequel titled The Exorcist: Deceiver.
The Exorcist: Believer released in 2023 to poor response from critics with many calling it an unnecessary sequel.
Considering the original has a massive cult following and remembered after more than 50 years later, helming a popular movie that is held in high regard is a tremendous task.
Mike Flanagan has made his mark in the horror community with films like Oculus, Hush, and adapting Stephen King's novels Gerald's Game and Doctor Sleep.
Flanagan cemented his title as horror maestro when he wrote, produced and directed the Netflix hit The Haunting of Hill House.
He has since then created four more horror shows for Netflix which included The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, and The Fall of the House of the Usher.
All of these shows were critically acclaimed and well-loved by horror fans.
Mike Flanagan manages to balance drama and horror elements seamlessly into his shows which is why most of his shows, upon release, have hit the top of the charts.
In May 2024, Mike Flanagan was reportedly in talks to direct the next Exorcist movie after the 2023 sequel received negative reviews and director David Gordon Green stepped down.
It was then reported that plans for the trilogy was officially scrapped and the new Exorcist movie was being planned.
The movie is apparently Flanagan's terrifying take on the Exorcist universe.
Considering the massive success Flanagan has received for his TV shows, no doubt the prolific filmmaker will be able to deliver a compelling movie that will be the perfect fit in the Exorcist franchise.
As of yet, no release date has been finalized for the next movie.
