Top 10 Reasons You Need to Watch the TV Show FROM
If there is one show you need to start watching immediately, it is FROM. The show streams on EPIX, which has now been rebranded as MGM+.
FROM is one of those shows that you would walk into with low expectations. It hasn’t been marketed as well, and the poster doesn’t yield any hints as to what the show is about. Go online, and you will find that the premise of the show has been shrouded in mystery too.
All it says is that people in a town are trapped and are threatened by creatures in the forest. So is it another show like LOST?
You may just think that and believe it to be an imitation of the hit show.
But FROM is not what you think it is. And because the title uses a generic word, you may not find a fandom for it yet.
FROM is a well-crafted, creepy show that needs to be on your watch list. Why?
Here are the Top 10 Reasons You Need to Watch FROM:
1) The Characterization
As with all shows and movies that show people trapped in a never-ending nightmare, FROM has a multitude of characters too, but the focus is on a dozen and each of them have a unique personality.
The characters are well-written and the acting takes the show a notch higher.
These characters are trapped in a town where after sundown, monsters come out. They must live in constant fear. Each of these characters are shown to react differently to this threat while understanding that they must stand together as a community in order to survive.
While most shows with similar themes have that one character who is annoying and keeps getting the others into trouble, there isn’t a single one here that you wouldn’t end up liking at the end of the episode. Or at the very least, feel sorry for them.
2) The Horror Scenes
Not all horror movies and TV shows can boast about having effective frightening scenes. Yet, FROM is different from the others. The setting is laid out, the threat is mentioned and you expect something horrific to happen.
But when it does, you will still not be prepared for the goosebumps brought on by those creepy scenes in the dark. FROM weaves the frightening scenes so well into the story that you will find yourself dragged into this nightmare and feel every bit of terror the characters feel.
3) The Supernatural Setting
Whenever a characters is brought into town, they see a large fallen tree and a murder of crows. That should be an omen about what the characters are about to face and it is.
The only thing is, that each of the residents in this new town, have come from different states, drove a measly few miles, yet ended up here. Just where is this place? Nobody knows and they are unable to contact anyone else from their homes.
And then there is the talismans. The protagonist, Boyd, accidentally finds them in a pit a few days after he entered the town. When he notices the creatures from the forest, just walking away from him because of the talisman, he brings it into town and distributes it to every house to keep them safe.
There is something about the talismans that keeps the creatures away.
The creatures in the forest look like regular humans until they attack. Once you see their true faces, you will have nightmares.
4) The Way Mental Health Issues are shown
Being trapped in a town where one must face something horrific every night, can take a beating to one’s sanity. While some are barely able to keep it together, we see characters like Sara and Victor, who hear voices and see people that may or may not be. They believe their actions will help all the people return home.
When Sara plots to kill a young boy because the “voices” tell her it will help everyone go home, she almost gives in only to be stopped by her brother whom she accidentally kills.
Rather than being punished for her sin, she is spared by Father Khatri and then later Boyd who understands her mental state and desperation to go home because his wife, Abby, had fallen into a manic state too, and killed a lot of innocents.
The show doesn’t criminalize mental health problems but shows that one must be patient, yet safe, when dealing with people who are starting to go over the edge.
5) The omission of unnecessary love tracks
A few episodes in, and pretty much every story that is set in a lost world, ends up with a couple of characters falling in love with another. FROM doesn’t have those gratuitous love scenes that wander off from the path of mystery and terror.
Everyone in town is too scared to think about anything else but how to survive the night.
However, there is a small track between Kenny and Kristi, but their scenes are never dragged to the point that we forget what the episode is about.
6) The Family Ties
We meet the Matthews family in the first episode and it becomes evident that not all is right with them. Julie keeps relentlessly teasing her younger brother Ethan, while Jim and Tabitha try to be responsible parents.
An episode of so in, we see that the reason Julie is bratty is because she knows her parents wanted a divorce and the whole reason they were on this cross-country RV trip was because they wanted one last “hurrah” before separating.
When the family members are given a choice to either stay at the Colony House or in town, only Julie decides to stay in the Colony House, away from her family. Still, she cares deeply about her family, and the bonds are strong, because when Ethan gets into trouble, the first thing he does is run to his sister.
Then there is Kenny and his parents. While his father tragically dies in a few episodes, he shares a loving bond with his mother who takes on Jade as a house guest, only to include him into their family rituals, thus making him family too.
The townspeople are shown to deeply care about one another just like in a family.
7) The Twists
Like any good horror show, there are twists in every episode and it will keep you hungry for more. The first episode especially, ends in a cliffhanger that will want you to check out the next episode immediately.
Unfortunately, the show releases its episodes weekly, so you have to wait.
The twists amplify the dangers of the town and show that what they fear isn’t only in the forest.
8) The Mystery
FROM is a scary show but it is the mystery element that will keep your interest going. There are so many unexplained things, like the fallen tree, or the Faraway trees that lets people teleport. Or the voice on the radio that knows Jim and what his wife is up to.
Also, just what is that symbol Jade keeps seeing and one Victor has in his books, too?
9) The Pace
FROM has entered the second season, and yet it has kept up the pace. There are no long drawn out scenes about characters moaning about their lives or how unfair everything is. Everyone is fight mode. They all want to get out of there which means they don’t want to sit and crib about their plight.
As viewers, this part of writing is advantageous to us because we can experience the thrills one after the other.
10) The Effects
There are shows and movies that rely heavily on CGI effects to make things scary. FROM has creatures of the forest but uses the effects sparingly.
They are just creepy people that although wear normal, human clothes, the minute you see them, you know something is off. The effects come into play when they suddenly transform into monsters. That is when the things get too creepy.
There are several scenes where the visual effects have been used to highlight a creepy scene, especially one where Boyd walks towards a tree and sees his dead wife screaming. She’s covered in spider webs and there are large spiders crawling everywhere.
Or when there is something squiggly squirming under a few character’s skins.
FROM makes good use of effects to provide scares. But the real terror comes from the well-structured writing.
