Humane (2024)--My take on the movie with spoilers!
Plot: As society begins to collapse due to climate issues, families are urged to enlist in an euthanasia program. One family's plan to enlist goes horribly wrong.
In this section:
What would you do to save the planet? How far would you go for your family?
Considering the movie's title is HUMANE, there isn't much humanity depicted in the movie.
Maybe a side character did shed a tear when family members are euthanized, but that's as far as humanity goes in Humane.
The film will remind you of other movies in the survivor horror genre. There's a little bit of Purge in there but unlike the franchise, Humane doesn't really make you want to sympathize or not sympathize with the characters.
You don't really connect with the characters and end up feeling disconnected when the plot takes a drastic turn.
HUMANE has all the elements of a thrilling horror movie but the weak ending dampens some of the excitement.
HUMANE Movie Plot Summary
The movie begins with a quick summary of the current events of the world where we are informed of the environmental disaster that has caused water shortage among one of the things.
The government has initiated an euthanasia program where a family member must give up their life and in return, their family will get benefits.
The whole point is that there aren't enough resources for everyone in the world and so the government is urging people to wipe themselves out instead of finding a way to multiply those resources.
We see a van going to a house from which a man exits and offers money to a woman while a gurney leaves the house. Apparently, the woman has lost someone to the euthanasia program.
The assistant in the van, gets emotional and then throws his coffee at the posters promoting the program.
The spokesperson for this program is Jared York. He is the son of Charles York who is getting dressed and seems upset.
The movers in his house make an offensive comment about Jared who is being interviewed on TV. Charles sort of agrees with them.
Charles then goes to see his wife Dawn who is busy cooking. She looks upset too and Charles comforts her. But Dawn finds more comfort in cooking.
Noah York is wandering about the streets when his sister Ashley York picks him up, suggesting that he better not flake out on the family dinner and there is no way she is going without him.
Jared enters the house and greets Dawn in a friendly manner but she is too pissed off at him since he is part of the controversial program. Since Charles emptied out the liquor bottles, there is nothing for Jared to find comfort with.
Rachel York and her daughter Mia also come. Charles isn't too pleased that Mia is here since he only wanted adults present.
On the way over, Noah confides in Ashley that he has cleaned up and even has a girlfriend called Grace. Ashley is happy for him but feels a little disappointed that he didn't confide in her earlier.
When the whole family gathers, Dawn serves exotic food, plated professionally. Noah remarks that her food is delicious and must make all her guests happy. Ashley whispers to him that Dawn's restaurant had closed down.
Awkward. Since Noah was in rehab, he probably didn't know that.
Charles makes an effort to be nice to his kids but Rachel has had enough and demands to know why they are all present here.
Charles announces that he has enlisted in the program. Jared is horrified that the program he has been supporting is being used by his father. He also tells them that Dawn has enlisted along with him. Rachel asks Dawn if she has been forced by Charles but she doesn't say anything.
The family makes a ruckus and is against the idea of Charles suddenly wanting to be a hero.
Noah talks about how he had started to get his life together following an accident which killed a woman. The scar on his face suggests the accident was severe and the woman whom he hit did not make it.
Charles goes to get Dawn who has gone to get dessert since ages.
He returns with a note. Dawn has left. Apparently she really didn't want to join the program.
The family thinks Charles should get out of it too when there is a knock on the door.
It's Bob. Mia practically slams the door on his face before calling her family. The Yorks can't believe that Charles planned his euthanasia today itself and gave the family a short time.
Charles promises his family that he will cancel since Dawn has also left.
Bob is let in and his deranged smile suggests he isn't too happy that Charles is going back on his word.
He talks to Charles privately and tells him that he has no choice and his career as an esteemed journalist is not going to save him.
He also remarks about the kind of list Charles doesn't want other people to find out about.
Charles has no choice but to go ahead with the euthanasia. We also don't find out what exactly Charles was involved in that has him scared.
He returns to his family and tells them he is going ahead with the euthanasia. He wants Noah to play the piano for him as he is administered drugs.
Bob happily sedates and poisons Charles while Noah plays the piano sadly.
The deed is done and Bob is pretty much told to get lost. He starts to leave but then stops saying that ad per contract he was promised two bodies.
The family informs him about Dawn running away but Bob threatens them, saying the family must choose amongst themselves or Jared's son and Mia will have to pay the price. They will be separated from the family and sent to camps that are not in a good state.
Bob and his team take Mia with them as the four siblings are left to decide who should be killed.
Rachel reveals that Noah has already received his share of the inheritance after the accident. Noah claims he was told by Dawn much later that Charles had paid the woman's family 3 million dollars to not press charges against Noah.
The family decide that Noah needs to go.
Noah thinks Ashley will support him but Rachel gets Ashley to side with her and Jared's decision.
Noah runs for his life as his siblings turn against him.
In the truck, Mia is throwing around attitude. Bob tries playing cards with her while the remaining Yorks are given two hours to decide.
Mia cuts out the cards when Bob excuses himself to take a phone call that informs him that Dawn was found and taken to headquarters.
He could have easily have her brought back and euthanized but prefers to play around with people's lives and doesn't tell the York siblings about it.
Rachel asks Bob whether the body he needs has to be euthanized or killed. Does he really need to do the procedure or just have a body delivered to him.
Bob doesn't mind if he receives a dead body.
The family goes to great extents to chase Noah around and attack him.
Since the mobile phones have been scrambled, Noah sends a text message to Grace and then chucks the phone out the window.
He locks himself in a room as the rest plot against him.
Bob tells Mia about how his wife had also enlisted in the program after she was diagnosed with cancer. Mia can't believe that Bob was married to a decent woman since he isn't one. She demands to see her family but isn't allowed to.
Ashley comes to see Noah and tells him she had become confused and is on his side. Noah leaves the room so he can speak to his siblings but he is attacked by them when Ashley distracts him with a childhood photo. Noah's hand is literally stabbed on the photo frame leading to cracks, symbolizing that his relationship with Ashley has now cracked after her betrayal.
There is some more running around as Noah fights back. Ashley runs away. Noah is knocked out soon after and tied up.
Grace comes to the house and demands to see Noah. Her heroics are rewarded with a bullet in her back.
Rachel and Jared now believe that Noah will not want to live after finding out that Grace is dead. Noah awakens and decides he wants to live no matter what.
He starts by stabbing Ashley and then hurting Jared and Rachel.
Rachel decides to volunteer herself. Time is running out and she thinks that since she isn't a great person, she should be the one to go.
Jared thinks he should give himself up since he has been backing the program and plus his son hates him.
Ashley volunteers too. She was a terrible sister after all. She is bleeding all over and Noah feels a little bad.
He says they do have another choice and they had it all along.
HUMANE Ending Explained
Bob is called in and he sees Ashley dead on the floor. Apparently she bled out.
Just as he is ready to take her in, Jared, Rachel and Noah attack him. Ashley helps too. She was not dead after all.
But she does get woozy as she is holding onto Bob. Bob's assistants are made to drop their weapons as the family finally gets together to thwart Bob's plans
Bob is knocked over when Ashley falls facedown on the floor.
When he awakens he sees a body covered with a sheet. He thinks it is Ashley. He tells the family to let him go when he finds out he is all tied up.
Noah reveals that the body under the sheet isn't Ashley but the woman who shot Grace. They were trying euthanasia experiments on her and didn't know what dose to give her.
They threaten to kill Bob if he doesn't let them out of the contract. While he is deliberating, Mia remarks that his wife was decent and he is not going to see her when he passes away.
Bob thinks that is true and has a change of heart.
In the next scene, Noah is playing piano at the concert. The whole family is there to support him, including Dawn.
In the mid credits scene we see Bob giving an interview where he says that this death was the most emotional one he has ever seen. He looks all bandaged up and clearly being forced to say this.
The deaths in question is of Grace and Ashley who were presumed to be friends who wanted to give their lives together.
So now the Yorks have been saved from any further government rules regarding population control. They have also received benefits since the fabricated story suggests that Ashley and Grace had done it for them.
The movie ends.
