No Way Up (2024)-- Ending Explained with spoilers

Plot: After the plane crashes into the ocean, the survivors are faced with dangerous challenges.

For a movie that is called No Way Up, you know that there is going to be a way up that is found at the very end of the movie. Right?

NO WAY UP is a fun survival movie. Yes, it isn't going to win any awards, and the acting is just passable. At times the tense moments are plain funny and rather than sitting at the edge of your seat, you may fall back in laughter.

But again, No Way Up is an interesting addition to the shark movie genre. Sharksploitation? Yes, Shark movies have become a popular sub-genre in recent years and this movie is just another one that you will find yourself enjoying.

NO WAY UP Plot

The movie begins with Jed and Kyle at the airport, waiting for Jed's girlfriend Ava to show up. Her father is a politician and his posters are hung up around the airport.

When Ava shows up with her body guard Brandon, Jed groans as he wanted to spend time with his girlfriend unsupervised.

Ava is the one who actually wants Brandon to come with her because she feels safer after an accident where she lost her mother. Brandon wants her to live her life and have fun with her friends but he understands her and decides to accompany her.

At the airport there is a little girl with a Teddy bear. Her name is Rosa and she is travelling with her grandparents. The movie becomes a little too focused on the Teddy bear. Rosa keeps losing it and people have to go to great lengths to find it for her.

Ultimately, spoiler alert, she decides she doesn't want the Teddy anymore and chucks it into the ocean when one of the characters makes a great effort to find it for her.

Back to the story, Rosa drops her Teddy bear and Ava sees it on the ground but doesn't pick it up until she spots Rosa crying and assumes it is hers. She finds it and gives it back to her. From then on, they become sort of friends.

They all board the plane and Rosa and Ava give each other a nod from across the aisles.

Kyle makes fun of the steward Danilo who gets his revenge by spilling a beverage on him "accidentally".

The flight takes off and Ava is naturally nervous but focusing on spending her vacation with her boyfriend and his friend.

Rosa looks out the window after getting a treat from her granny and is shocked. The jet engine is on fire and the flames are spreading.

In the next instant, there is an explosion and the plane begins to descend. Ava is terrified and she looks on to Brandon who reassures her.

They land into the ocean and since the plane nosedived, and our protagonists were sitting at the back, they are fine. Only the pilots were killed and most of the passengers sitting up front.

Ava looks at her boyfriend and Kyle with wide eyes. Kyle's arm is badly twisted. He freaks out.

Luckily, Rosa and her grandmother are also safe. The grandfather did not make it. And Danilo is fine too. None of the others who got any screen time in the beginning, makes it alive.

Brandon, who is specially trained to deal with crisis, volunteers to retrieve an oxygen tank from one of the passengers who was ill. Since the passenger was killed, he has no use for the oxygen tank.

Brandon tries to be a hero and dives into the water but not before Rosa's granny requests he also bring back the grandfather's cap. Brandon is like, seriously? He has to put his life at risk for a cap?

He swims to the front and sees the huge hole in the wall of the plane. Guess who enters the plane?

A shark, of course. It attacks Brandon who swims quickly up front with the tank and grandpa's cap.

Before Ava can cry about not being able to handle this situation, the shark drags Brandon away. A pool of blood forms as Ava snivels.

Just as Kyle is having his arm fixed by Nana who used to be an army nurse, there is helicopter rescue , hovering about. Just as predicted, they have arrived after finding out that the plane has lost contact. But they are unable to find any evidence of wreckage.

Meanwhile, Jed who has been studying to be an engineer, thinks that the structure they are currently in can hold for much longer. Just as the words leave his mouth, the plane goes further down and rests on the edge of a cliff. They are deeper than before and will run out of oxygen in three to four hours.

They all decide to swim for it and decide to use the life vests. Rosa tells them that at school she had read that sharks are afraid of bubbles. Did she also learn that sharks don't really target and attack humans aggressively for no reason?

Anyway, in horror movies, sharks think humans are a delicacy and will do whatever it takes to eat them.

Back to the movie, the survivors are getting ready to swim out while the helicopter rescuers have finally spotted some wreckage but uh-oh, they have run out of fuel.

Fortunately, the scuba divers are sent in for rescue and so the survivors are actually going to survive now, right?

Nope.

Just as the divers spot the plane and the survivors, a shark attacks them from behind. They are clearly bad at playing charades because the survivors try desperately to warn them with sign language but they are unable to understand it.

One of the divers is chomped by a shark while the other is dragged away. The passengers try to find the second diver to help him or at least steal his gear but Jed ends up getting his leg bitten off by a shark in the struggle.

Rosa's granny tries to stop the bleeding but she tells Ava to not have much hope. Kyle and Jed have a sweet moment after which Kyle succumbs to his injury.

Ava dries her tears quickly and decides to go into the baggage area to find the scuba gear she and her friends were going to use on their vacation.

Danilo could have gone instead considering he knows the plane layout better than her but Ava wants to play hero. So off she goes, manages to get spooked by sharks but retrieve the gear.

Right before Ava makes a dive to follow the others, Rosa's granny tells Ava that she will be staying back because...there's no reason except that she may be slowing everyone down because...of her age?

It doesn't make sense why she makes this sacrifice. Ava happily accepts the sacrifice because that means more oxygen for them.

NO WAY UP Ending Explained with Spoilers

The plane keeps going deeper and the passengers are trying to dodge the sharks while dealing with oxygen shortage.

Kyle is the next to become the shark's dinner. Ava uses Rosa's bubbles trick to distract the sharks.

They find the second diver floating from a seat and steal his tanks.

Ava gives the oxygen tank to Danilo and signs to take Rosa with him. Their life vests are inflated and they begin to float up to the surface.

Ava isn't too lucky. She is chased by a shark for a long time and is at risk of losing her oxygen. She sees the shark heading straight for her at one point and manages to make a clean escape just as the plane moves further down.

Ava tries to swim for the surface but it is too far and she loses consciousness.

When she surfaces, she is floating face down.

Is she dead?

Nope. Somehow, she begins to breathe again without CPR. And she also spots the Teddy bear Rosa lost yet again.

She grabs it and swims just as helicopter rescue arrives to take her up. She is relieved to find Danilo and Rosa okay. When the pilot asks if there are any more survivors, Ava shakes her head sadly. Rosa notices and weeps a little bit when she realizes her granny is gone too. She then chucks the Teddy into the ocean, saying that she doesn't need it anymore.

Ava has great patience as she sees this. She did make an effort to save the Teddy after all.

The helicopter flies away and the movie ends.

No Way Up can leave you feeling breathless at times but also incredulous at the scenes in the climax.

It's just one of those movies that are made for pure entertainment and not meant to analyse that much.
