Top Horror Movies of 2024 (So Far)

How quickly time passes.

One minute it was January and in a blink of an eye we are already suffering through a hot July summer.

For horror fans, this year has been a mixed bag of treats. We got to see much -awaited movies from popular horror production houses and then we got to see the low budget horror movies that surprisingly left an impact.

There were a couple of religious horror, creature features and the usual slashers. Whether the movie scored high with critics or not, they found an audience and did well at the box office.

Here are some of the Top Horror Movies of 2024 So Far, and by that I mean the best movies from January 2024 to June 2024.

1) A Quiet Place: Day One

Hear how it all began. That was the tagline of the prequel and spin-off of The Quiet Place franchise. Starring Lupita Nyong'o and Joseph Quinn the story was about a terminally ill woman, visiting New York when the city is attacked by the blind creatures with an acute sense of hearing.

The woman is helped by an English Law Student called Eric who teaches her the meaning of life.

There’s a cat called Frodo and thankfully Frodo survives.

The movie has grossed $243.6 million worldwide and has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 87%.

2) Late Night With the Devil

The movie is perhaps the highest rated horror movie of this year. Late Night With The Devil released in March and still holds a rating of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The rating is obviously well-deserved for a movie that is simply brilliant in its execution but primarily because of the lead David Dastmalchian’s performance.

The story was about a late night show host desperate to boost his ratings. He decides to bring in a possessed girl on the show but things quickly go out of hand.

If you are a horror fan you may have already watched this gem.

3) In a Violent Nature

Standing at 81% on Rotten Tomatoes, In A Violent Nature is an offbeat film that offers a unique way of storytelling through the killer’s eyes. The movie has been lauded by critics for fresh take on slasher movies and for providing tension throughout.

The movie is about a group of friends accidentally resurrecting a man who then goes on a killing spree. The kills, as the name suggests, is as violent as one can imagine.

4) The First Omen

Released in April, The First Omen was one of the most awaited movie of the year mainly because the movie was going to serve as a prequel to the cult Omen franchise.

The First Omen starred Nell Tiger Free, Ralph Ineson, and Bill Nighy in main roles. The movie was about a young woman sent to Rome to begin life at church who then uncovers a dangerous conspiracy taking place.

The movie won favorable reviews from critics but had an average performance at the box office.

The movie has a rating of 82% at the box office.

5) Abigail

This may be the most entertaining movie you watch this year. It has a nice star cast: Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, and Kathryn Newton, plus it is about vampires!

The movie is about a group of kidnappers who unwittingly work on a job that puts their life at risk. Yes, they accidentally kidnap an innocent girl who turns out to be a vampire.

The movie is funny, scary and thrilling. Standing at an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this is one movie you do not want to miss.

6) Immaculate

Starring Sydney Sweeney, this movie is seen as a twin film of The First Omen. Both movies have an unsuspecting woman made a pawn in a conspiracy to give birth to evil.

The movie was about a young novice who joins a convent only to find herself suddenly pregnant.

Immaculate was praised by the critics who also lauded Sydney Sweeney’s performance.

Immaculate holds a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

7) Sting

If you hate spiders you may want to avoid this one. But if you are also a horror fan then you do not want to miss this movie. Granted the movie focuses more on family dynamics than the spider, it is still one of those movies that are entertaining.

If you though spiders can only bite, think again. The spider in Sting is mutated and can tear off skin and bash human heads.

Sting is laced with dark humor so don’t be surprised when during an intense scene, you find yourself chuckling instead.

The movie stars Alyla Browne, Penelope Mitchell, and Ryan Corr. Critics have called this movie an entertaining creature feature and praised the performance of all actors.

Currently, Sting holds a rating of 69% on Rotten Tomatoes.

8) Munjya

Produced by Dinesh Vijan of the hit Stree horror comedy universe, Munjya was a surprise entry this year. The movie may have not won over the critics but it performed tremendously at the box office by raking in more than 131 crores.

The movie starred Sharvari, Mona Singh, and Abhay Verma in lead roles. Munjya is about a young boy who is in love with an older girl Munni. After he accidentally dies during a black magic ritual, he becomes a ghost called Munjya. Desperate to marry Munni, the creature possesses Bittu.

The movie also includes a scene mid credits to tie it with another horror comedy movie from the same banner, Bhediya.

Munjya has a rating of 56% on Rotten Tomatoes.

9) Lisa Frankenstein

What’s Valentine’s Day without a romantic movie? For horror fans, what’s Valentine’s Day without a good horror romance?

This year, we were treated to a rom-com-horror movie starring Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse. The movie was about a teenager who develops a relationship with a reanimated corpse from the Victorian era. She realizes that to complete the transformation, she will need to acquire body parts for the corpse. And so begins a killing spree which ends with the creature finally becoming somewhat of a human.

The movie barely made its budget at the box office and failed to impress the critics but the audience believed that the movie’s quirkiness was a huge draw coupled with exceptional performances from the vast.

While the movie may have a rating of 52% on Rotten Tomatoes, the audience has given the movie a score of 81%.

10) Shaitaan

Based on the gujrati film Vash, Shaitaan was about a daughter who falls under the black magic spell cast by a stranger. The family struggles to rescue their daughter before the stranger harms their family.

The movie may not have been appreciated by the critics but did excellent business at the box office, garnering 211.06 crores.

Starring Ajay Devgn, R. Madhavan, and Jyothika, Shaitaan is one of the highest grossing Indian films of 2024.
