Horror Movie News: Y2K threat reimagined in Kyle Mooney directed movie. Creepy trailer for Beezel drops.

Millennials will remember the year 1999 and especially New Years Eve. It was a time of uncertainty because none of us were sure if the computers we had begun to rely on was going to work as the year changed to 2000.

Fortunately, the year 2000 began with minimal computer errors and life went on as usual. But what if it hadn’t?

A24’s latest offering, Y2K explores this what-if situation by giving it a dark humor twist.

Directed by Kyle Mooney, the movie stars Jaeden Martell, Rachel Zegler, and Alicia Silverstone.

In the movie trailer, we see Eli going off to school while his parents are excited about who he’s going to ask for the new year’s eve party. Eli has a major crush on Laura who he sees at a grocery store with her friends. He tries talking to her and she tells him about the new year’s party she’s going to. There’s also a chance that Laura and her friends steal from the store and run away.

In the evening, Eli is at the party when he sees Laura kissing another boy at midnight. He doesn’t have much time to process it because after midnight, all the machines go crazy.

The party guests are killed in inventive ways where one is killed by a flying VHS tape. As the machines go out of control, the survivors, including Eli and Laura must find a way to combat these machines that have glitched because of Y2K.

It’s going to be a crazy fight against the machines but millennials will enjoy the nostalgia along with the soundtrack.

Tubthumping by Chumbawamba plays in the background of the trailer as well as sung by one of the characters in the movie.

Y2K has already had its world premiere in March at South by Southwest. It currently holds a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with critics praising the nostalgic feel of the movie but criticizing its premise that seems to be like an SNL sketch stretched too long.

Y2K will release in theatres on December 6th.

In other news, the creepy trailer for BEEZEL has dropped. Written by Victoria Fratz and Aaron Fradkin who also directs, the movie is about a blind witch with an insatiable thirst for souls.

In the trailer, we see a man called Harold, recording a confession. He knows exactly who killed his wife. Apparently, it was an unsolved mystery or perhaps Harold himself was accused of killing his wife.

Harold is now using documentarian Apollo’s help to set the record straight about what really happened to his wife.

Poor Apollo doesn’t stand a chance as Harold reveals the real reason he is there, to offer him as a sacrifice.

Apollo is all tied up as Harold gets possessed by a witch. He then tells Apollo that he can already taste him. While the twist may be surprising and eerie, the contact lenses are a bit cartoonish.

We then see a woman who may be a doctor or nurse, looking for her patient in the basement. She instead finds herself being chased by the blind witch.

According to the plot, the story is about the blind witch targeting unsuspecting victims for the past sixty years and so there is a chance we will get to see interwoven stories about how the blind witch haunted people over different time periods.

The movie stars LeJon Woods, Bob Gallagher, and Caroline Quigley.

BEEZEL releases on September 24th.
