Soul Mates (2023)-- Ending Explained with Spoilers

Plot: Allison and Jason wake up next to each other in a strange place and find that they must go through a series of challenges in order to escape.

A lot of viewers will find Soul Mates reminiscent of the Saw franchise.

I'm here to tell you that apart from the borrowed theme and handcuffs, SOUL MATES is nothing like Saw.

While Saw gripped you and held your attention from the very first scene, Soul Mates will not do the same. In fact, after a couple of minutes, you may find yourself getting bored and uninterested in the characters.

The characters are simply not likeable enough for you to care about them.

And the twist? You will see it coming from the very first scene.

Soul Mates is a tepid version of Saw. It has no thrills, and the character motives are so farfetched that it doesn't seem believable.

The situations presented are simply not dire enough for the characters to behave as they do. Whether it is acting skills or simply the way the characters are written, there is visible disinterest in their expressions. They never appear tensed or fearful of their surroundings or their predicament.

Soul Mates lacks soul and is at best described as a watered-down version of Saw or Escape Room.

Anyway, here is what happened in the movie

SOUL MATES Movie Plot

Allison wakes up from a bed and is massaging her head when she finds a handcuff around her wrist. The other end of the handcuff is attached to a guy, and Allison gets ready to strike him with a bedside lamp.

She wakes up the sleeping guy and barely lets him collect his bearings before she accuses him of kidnapping her. The guy is just as shocked and tries to convince her he is just as much as kidnapped as she is.

Clearly he doesn't seem like the guy to trust but we have to go alo g with it anyway so that we can be surprised by the reveal in the end.

The major giveaway was the fact that these characters just don't seem panicked enough about their situation.

They soon realize that the only way out is through a puzzle and so after solving it they move out to find the Matchmaker greeting them and afterwards brief them about how their privacy was properly invaded through the years.

Both Jason and Allison are shocked to discover that while they have never signed up for this matchmaking service their personal videos and cameras were hacked into.

Next up is another puzzle for them to solve...except it is kind of like being in Saw.

Both are forced to sit and ask each other questions and if they get anything wrong, there is a man all tied up who ends up going into the shredder.

Of course they barely know each other and despite cheating with hand signs, Allison makes one silly mistake. Jason was literally even showing her the right number of fingers but she completely fumbles.

The poor tied up guy gets sucked into the shredder and his bits fly about everywhere.

The two still get to move to the next round.

In the next round it is karaoke time.

What's at stake here? Their family members.

If they sing horribly and don't make enough points, their family member will be killed.

Allison sings like a trained singer and is given an easy song. She manages to save her granny.

Jason is terrible and manages to flop. His brother is shot. Jason is devastated but as you can see, he moves on pretty quickly. After all, Allison is there to comfort him.

So now that they have had an awkward first date, karaoke, and learned something about each other, it's time for dinner.

Both are given nice clothes to wear. They must take a shower before and since there is one they take turns.

Both end up peeking at each other and bonding over stuff.

It's dinner time and they are made to sit at a table. A server approaches them and she has a shock collar on her. The two try to help her but she gets a shock every time they try to.

Their task in this round is to not enjoy the suspiciously looking meal but to gobble it down in seconds or else the server will be electrocuted.

The two manage to dump each course but the main course has some really disgusting meat that Allison barely manages to gobble.

She fails and the server gets shocked a bit.

By the time the dessert comes in, Jason has been keeping an eye on the door that opens for the server. Even though Allison discourages him, Jason makes a run  for the door and since the two are still handcuffed to each other, Allison has no choice but to join him.

Of course he fails to escape and of course the server gets properly electrocuted until she dies.

Their torment is not over. In the next round, the two head to the movies. Except it is a movie about Jason's ex fiancee who is murdered on camera.

Allison's sympathy for Jason grows.

So when in the next round they are told to get intimate with each other, Allison is easily convinced to do it with a guy she just met. Jason tries to show some reluctance until eventually he enjoys himself.

The room suddenly fills with gas and they both fall unconscious. Turns out they both won the round and can now be with each other because they are the perfect match!

SOUL MATES Ending Explained

Eight months later, Allison and Jason are about to get married. Allison has even changed her hairstyle.

As she is roaming about the house, she comes across a box with handcuffs and a message from the Matchmaker thanking Jason for using his services.

Allison tries to hide the fact that she found out bug Jason guesses she saw the box. He gives his excuses and then reveals that literally all the people who supposedly died in the maze, were actors.

Allison feels betrayed because she believed their relationship was built on the deaths of innocents.

The two end up getting in a fight after Allison figures out that Jason had her stalker before he chose her from other matches.

They are really going at each other when Allison manages to get the upper hand by strangling Jason with the handcuffs.

Since Jason had mentioned that the Matchmaker has been helping him clean messes, Allison makes a call too, probably to have her mess cleaned up to.

Or maybe to get help finding her perfect mate no matter what crazy tactics are used.

The movie ends.

Soul Mates had an okay theme but it borrows heavily from Saw and Escape Room, and every scene is a painful reminder of it.

It also doesn't help that the actors barely give it their all and despite the movie being fast paced, the proceedings seem slow because of their delivery.
