Horror Book Review: Ghost Camera by Darcy Coates

This week’s Horror Book Pick is Ghost Camera written by Darcy Coates. The bestselling author has revived an old story she had written some time back and released it in July 2024. Along with the titular story, there are eight more short stories included as a bonus in this collection.

The book is a bestseller in the Horror Short Stories category as well as the Ghost Suspense category.

Readers have found this book to be thrilling, creepy, pacy and an enjoyable take on the concept of a haunted camera.

There were some who didn’t enjoy the characters and found the main characters to be unlikable and mean spirited.

Quick Book Review of GHOST CAMERA by Darcy Coates

Jenine is attending her friend’s wedding when she decides to get a better angle for a photo from the top of a lighthouse. While taking a picture, she bumps into an old Polaroid camera placed behind her. She takes a photo with it and heads back downstairs where an old man tells her that she shouldn’t have gone up because a young boy had fallen down.

When Jenine is back home, she removes the photo she took at the wedding with the Polaroid camera and is shocked to see someone else besides the guests at the party.

Jenine confides about this to her friend Bree and together the two friends take more photos only to find ghosts in each and every one of them. The friends wonder if the camera is capable of taking photos of ghosts or if the ghosts only appear when the camera is being used.

The story starts off well at the very core of a pivotal turn in the story. Jenine comes off as a relatable character and her friend Bree is just the kind of friend she would need who not only believes her about the camera but also tries to help her get to the bottom of the mystery behind it.

The story flows well and is engaging. Since it is a horror story, the author is careful about not deviating from the theme. There is an atmosphere of creepiness throughout, broken only by the characters’ witty remarks.

To Read or Not to Read?

Ghost Camera may not have an original plot but it appears to be a fun read for horror fans. It may not be the scariest story you will read, but it is a perfect addition to your horror collection.

I would definitely want to continue reading just to find out how the young boy features in the mystery behind the Polaroid camera.
