Quick Book Review of Object X
Sam and Wendy are the kind of couple who even after years of marriage, are still crazy about each other. They have a six-year-old son Tommy who is sweet and the apple of his parents’ eyes.
But everything changes when an unusual object appears in their backyard.
The author introduces the couple as well as the plot point immediately in the first chapter. The story is told through Wendy who is awakened by her husband who is shocked to find a black, rectangular object floating just above the ground in their backyard.
Wendy suggests they call the police, but something in Sam has changed, it’s almost like he is hypnotized.
A flashback shows Wendy make breakfast for her family and musing how lucky she is to have a husband who is crazy about her and a son who adores her. She feels like the luckiest woman alive.
Without divulging all the events in the climax, the same scene plays out again, except this time it takes a rather poignant turn.
As Sam grows obsessed with the black object, so does his attempts to find out how to get the object to respond to him. What starts off as curiosity, quickly turns into desperation that leads Sam to commit a despicable act that will horrify you.
This mysterious object holds secrets and the couple must do whatever it can to figure out what it wants and how to survive the dangers that accompany it.
The author does manage to write a captivating sci-fi story that holds your interest from the first sentence. But most importantly, the characterizations hold the key to move the story forward.
It is interesting to see Sam’s moral degeneration and his transformation from a loyal and loving husband and father, to a man fixated on an object that takes over his life.
And then there’s Wendy who is ready to go to great lengths to protect her family, even if it means that she has to sacrifice herself or combat scary monsters.
Readers will enjoy this thrilling book that has elements of mystery infused with just the right dose of sci-fi horror.
