Short Horror Film Review: Kalley's Last Review
Plot: A beauty vlogger runs into trouble when she tries a new face product.
How many of you read the reviews of a product before buying it? Unless you have heard of it or seen it in advertisements, there's always a risk with trying out new products in case they don't work out the way you want it to. And so we end up relying on reviews.
Someone out there has tried that product and made things easier for others by writing a review of the product.
Of course for that to happen there has to be someone who dares to try the product first.
Isn't it great that we have reviewers and bloggers who test the product for us and then write about it to share with the world?
KALLEY'S LAST REVIEW is a creepy tale of a vlogger who reviews beauty products. The movie is shot like you are watching a real vlog. The acting is convincing and the story can be disturbing to watch.
There's no easy way to say this but do not eat while watching this short.
KALLEY'S LAST REVIEW
The short begins with a title card "AT-HOME BEAUTY WITH KALLEY". We then meet Kalley who introduces herself and reminds everyone that her name has the letters K and Y, in case you didn't read the same thing on the title card.
She then goes on to reveal that this video is her first sponsored review. She is super excited of this at-home chemical peel kit by SOUS Skincare Essentials. And here's the best part. SOUS Skincare Essentials is a startup and they had requested Kalley to do a review for them.
Kalley is excited by this opportunity and studies the jar which has a photo of a woman looking a little too stretched. She then describes her complexion to her followers and how she needs to get some work done on her forehead and cheeks. She hopes the chemical peel will work wonders on her.
Chemical peels usually remove the top layers of the skin and promotes growth of the inner layers of the skin. Usually, the chemical peel removes all blemishes and lines. However, it does all seem a bit risky. How risky? We are about to find out from this short.
It's application day and Kalley begins by applying the product all over her face. She doesn’t bother with trying the product on one side of her hand or elbow to check for allergies. She straights away liberally applies it to her face. The smell alone makes her wrinkle her nose but she applies it nonetheless.
After application, she waits for some time and notices the redness on her face. She then uses a neutralizer which has clumped up. Desperate, she opens the bottle and tries to dig in with her fingers and remove the neutralizer.
The next time we see Kalley, her face is getting really red and she is going out to shop for coconut oil which she explains, the sales rep told her would work as a neutralizer. That means Kalley ran out of neutralizer. That means she had to use all of it because her face is really starting to burn.
She logs in again to report how going out in the sun turned out to be a bad idea. Her skin is really beginning to irritate her now but she pushes through to reach home.
The next video shows her in bed. It's nighttime and her skin is showing blisters. Kalley explains how it is all the bad stuff that was in her skin that is surfacing.
We then see her trying to drink from a cup but she winces. Her skin is all crusty now. The skin over her lip is peeling. She is still hopeful that new skin is starting to grow under the gross upper layer.
Her next update is painful to watch. Kalley is in bed with bandages all over her face. She explains how SOUS Skincare Essentials no longer wants to be her sponsor anymore. She is upset that they no longer want to take her calls or reply to her emails.
But Kalley says she is going to power through for her followers. She is determined to see this through no matter what. She wants to do this for her loyal followers and make SOUS Skincare Essentials regret not letting her be the face of their product.
Some time later, we see Kalley doing the unveiling of her new face. She peels away the top layer revealing only muscles underneath.
The product appears to have burn through all the layers of the skin.
We then see a card that tells us that Kalley's channel had only 8 subscribers. The next one shows that Kalley had no email correspondence from SOUS Skincare. There was no evidence of the company even existing.
Apparently all that was found was orders for DIY packaging materials and trichloroacetic acid, an ingredient used in chemical peel products.
The short movie ends.
KALLEY'S LAST REVIEW Ending Explained
Now either SOUS Skincare Essentials did exist and managed to cover up their tracks cleverly. Or Kalley was delusional.
That means she got desperate when her channel wasn't getting more subscribers and so started her own product. It's no surprise that someone who has only 8 subscribers would even get people to sponsor the channel.
Kalley pretended to be the spokeperson of the product she had launched but since she made it herself, she misused the ingredients leading to her peeling off her entire skin from her face.
Her delusions pushed her on, hoping she would finally be happy with her looks and finally achieve success.
This would explain why Kalley didn't seek medical help and instead kept posting about her health updates.
Even in the end, she remarks on the growth of new skin rather than ask for help.
KALLEY'S LAST REVIEW is a truly terrifying movie. There are no monsters. No ghosts. The true enemy is the unhinged mind.
