Elevator Game-- Movie Ending Explained with spoilers
Plot: A group of people who run an online web series find themselves haunted after playing the elevator game.
The elevator game has been played for a long time now but it didn't gain prominence until a woman was found dead in a hotel water tank after she allegedly played the elevator game.
The game involves going up and down an elevator uninterrupted. Eventually you reach a floor where you are supposed to keep your eyes closed because a woman will appear and call out to you. Under no circumstances must you acknowledge her.
If things go wrong, you will end up in the other world and at that point it is important not to lose sight of the elevator.
Once the ritual is complete, you should end up at the ground floor and be able to go home.
The ELEVATOR GAME delivers well on horror scenes but doesn't really make use of the one thing that made the legend scary.
It was all about being trapped in an elevator. There is an obvious missed opportunity where the filmmakers don't make use of the claustrophobic scenes that could have added to the intense moments in the movie.
What happens instead is that we see the hauntings happening out of the elevator. The elevator scenes are added as an afterthought rather than making it the star of the show.
Nevertheless, Elevator Game is still a decent movie about a legend that seems to be scarier than this.
ELEVATOR GAME Plot
The movie opens with a woman called Becki getting into an elevator and filming herself. She has a sheet of paper with the rules of the game and proceeds with playing with it.
Things go weird when she arrives at the floor where she is supposed to keep her eyes closed. She tries really hard but before the doors close, curiosity gets the better of her and she opens her eyes.
Since she broke a rule, instead of the elevator ending up at the ground floor, she is taken upstairs where she comes face to face with the woman no one is supposed to talk to. She screams.
The elevator finally descends and when the doors open, Becki is nowhere in sight.
We then meet a group of people: Matty, Kevin, Izzy, Kris, and Chloe, who are trying to come up with ideas for their online web series. They want some really good ideas to attract sponsors and get more viewers.
Ryan is brought in and he pretends to be an enthusiastic intern who comes up with the idea to make up a video about the elevator game. But Ryan is told that no one would want to watch twenty minutes of people going up and down the elevator. Besides they had already thought of the idea and passed on it some time ago.
When the group can't come up with another idea, Ryan's idea is revisited although Kris doesn't seem very happy. In fact he gives Ryan the stink eye.
Ryan gets chatty with the group and speaks to Chloe who is the resrarcher in the group. She absolutely loves her job.
The group uses an old hotel elevator to play the game and make sure to be sneaky about it as only one security guard is roaming about.
Chloe, Kris and Matty get into the elevator and install a camera in the corner.
Izzy and Kevin monitor the game using a tablet while Ryan also watches.
The trio inside the elevator film the scene but Kris seems moody. They follow all the rules and when it is time to close their eyes, Kris promises not to peek but is still skeptical about the urban legend.
The elevator begins to act weirdly but luckily a businessman has to use the elevator and the trio are saved from whatever was supposed to happen but doesn't because the movie has only begun.
Kris creates a fuss after all of them are tossed out by the security guard.
Ryan reveals that Becki was his sister and that she was a fan of the series and began seeing Kris. But Kris dumped her and in order to impress him, she had filmed herself playing the elevator game.
Ryan blames Becki's disappearance on Kris who is then insulted by his friends for being such a casanova.
They all head home but Kris is the one who experiences a haunting. He is choked and has his neck twisted all the way.
The woman of the elevator has somehow escaped the elevator anf killing people in their homes. No one is safe now.
Ryan heads back to the elevator to search for his sister only to get trapped into Red World where everything is, well, red.
There, he sees a girl who was also trapped in this world. She turns monstrous and Ryan freaks out.
On the other side, Chloe is researching the story and listening to music. Behind her a ghost tries to haunt her but then decides not to waste its time.
Izzy and Kevin remember that they left the camera in the corner and decide to retrieve it.
They enter the elevator and try to reshoot some of the footage they had lost. They too mess up the round where the woman has to make an appearance. The woman comes up behind them and rips them both apart. The footage captures their demise.
Meanwhile, Ryan just about manages to get into the elevator on time. He doesn't find Izzy and Kevin's bodies which means they just vanished.
Matty is at the bus stop when he experiences a haunting too. He returns to the office.
Chloe and Ryan end up at the office too to discuss what happened to Izzy and Kevin.
Chloe tells them what she learned when she did her research. She tells the others about a girl who was left at the bottom of the elevator shaft as a sorority prank. However, the other girls forgot about her and when the elevator was operated after the weekend, the girl was crushed to death.
Matty is the next one killed right in the office.
Ryan and Chloe realize the door to the red world was left open because a businessman interrupted their game. They need to play the game once more in order to close the door.
ELEVATOR GAME Ending Explained
The two play the game once more and successfully enter the Red World. Ryan thinks he sees Becki and chases after her but Chloe tells him that he needs to accept that his sister has died and return to playing the game so that they can close the door to the spirit world.
Ryan agrees reluctantly but somehow the woman still ends up attacking Chloe and him. Apparently the duo didn't notice that before they closed the door to the red world, the woman was not present. Which means they left the ghost hanging out in the elevator.
Ryan is still in the elevator when the door opens to the Red World. He's going to be another trapped soul there.
The elevator opens again and is empty, waiting for more people to play the game.
In the next scene, a social media influencer, gets into the elevator and mentions the group who had gone missing.
Before she can press the buttons sequentially, a ghostly finger pushes a button, suggesting the ghost woman no longer wants people to play the game.
She has made her own rules to the game apparently.
The movie ends.
ELEVATOR GAME has an enticing premise but it manages to muddle up a creepy legend by not sticking to the rules of the game.
