Happy Halloween! Here's my list of my favorite horror movies of this year
Happy Halloween to all my readers!
This years has been great for all horror fans because we got an array of horror movies to whet our appetite for all things scary and strange.
There have been low budget movies with exceptional stories and high budget movies with mediocre plots. Some movies did well and some that were highly anticipated turned out to be duds.
Nevertheless it is worth noting that in recent years, the horror genre has seen immense growth. Horror movies are no longer only released near the spooky season, also known as September and October.
We now see new releases from the beginning of the year with stories focused on relationships and the threat they face. The year usually ends with Christmas-themed horror movies where sometimes it is Santa Claus doing all the slaying.
In fact, this year’s highly anticipated horror movie, Nosferatu, releases on Christmas Day. What an interesting way to end the year, isn’t it?
Anyway, here’s my list of horror movies that I thoroughly enjoyed watching this year. They may not have the best critics rating but they were enjoyable nevertheless.
1) Longlegs
Neon’s extensive marketing is what got me all hyped up. It was a unique strategy to show cases and not even reveal the title until a month. And then, they kept the titular character hidden.
So of course, I had to see Longlegs in the theatre.
The movie immersed you into a sea of eeriness from the very first scene itself and kept you there until the very last scene.
Both Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage did complete justice to their characters.
I may have already watched this movie twice.
2) Oddity
A lot of characters are calling it the best horror movie of this year and they may be right. I saw the trailer and was intrigued by it but I didn’t quite think the movie would be that good.
I was wrong. The very first scene draws you in and you welcome the pull. It is another one of those atmospheric tension movies that keep you on the edge, expecting something terrible to happen to the characters you have come to sympathize with.
The acting is brilliant and the climax is clever. The movie doesn’t rely too much on jumpscares but rather on exceptional storytelling. This is a must-watch for sure.
3) Late Night With The Devil
I may have seen David Dastmalchian in several movies before but I noticed him in Late Night With the Devil. The actor is what made the movie and without his screen presence and acting capabilities, the movie would not have been as impactful.
But Late Night With The Devil (even though it is considered a 2023 movie but was released in theatres in 2024), is one of the best movies you can enjoy this year. I sure did.
4) Apartment 7A
This movie may not have been received well by critics who thought it was nowhere near the original Rosemary’s Baby, but this was actually an interesting watch.
I haven’t watched the original movie but I have read the novel which is why Apartment 7A was an enjoyable horror movie for me. I got to know the backstory of Terry, one of the characters that brings about an interesting twist to Rosemary’s story, despite her having a minimal role in the original.
5) Abigail
This would have been higher on my list but then again this year had too many good horror movies.
The story had a clever twist about a group of people unknowingly kidnapping a vampire. Wits are tested and Dan Stevens, and Melissa Barrera put in an earnest effort. Alisha Weir is the show-stealer though. As the titular character she makes the movie fun yet creepy.
So, that is my short list of horror movies that I thoroughly enjoyed watching this year. Maybe they were yours as well. If not, let me know your favorite horror movie this year.
