Cobweb (2023)-- Ending Explained with spoilers

Plot: An eight year old boy investigates strange knocking sounds coming from inside his bedroom walls and discovers a dark family secret.

Two good actors. A dull movie that doesn't do justice to their talents.

Cobweb can best be described as a movie that is unfair towards Lizzy Caplan and Antony Starr. Both actors can clearly act and have great screen presence. But their roles are collectively condensed to around ten minutes.

The focus is on Peter and how easy he is manipulated by an unseen presence in his house. You can't help but feel a tad irritated with the boy rather than feel sympathy for him.

Cobweb has an interesting tale to tell, however it begins to unravel in the second half. The movie also lacks genuine scares and doesn't use its actors well in the story.

COBWEB Movie Plot

The movie begins with Peter being bullied at school. He's shy and barely speaks to anyone. At home his mother teaches him piano and his father appears to be strict.

At night, Peter is sleeping when he hears a noise coming from behind his bedroom walls. He gets spooked enough to wake up his parents who inspect his room.

His mother, Carol, assures him there is nothing scary going on. His father tells him about the possibility of rats. The very next day, Peter's father, Mark gets his son to help him set out poisoned rat food.

Because this scene is given some prominence, the rat poison is sure to come into play later. Especially since it smells so cinnamon-y.

At school, Peter finds a new teacher has come to substitute. Miss Devine takes to Peter because he is so quiet and doesn’t believe in going out for recess.

Back home, Peter talks to Mark about wanting to go for Trick r Treating this year. Mark says nope since a kid had gone missing a year ago on Halloween.

We dont get to see a proper flashback to lets assume that there is more to the Halloween story than Peter is being told.

It's nighttime and Peter hears knocking again. He hears noises and is so spooked he screams. His parents come to check up on him and dismiss his experience as a nightmare.

Peter doesn't think so and at school the next day, he draws a boy in bed, in the dark, saying Help Me. Actually it is supposed to be coming from the walls but Ms Devine believes that it is Peter who is in need of help.

And so off she goes to check up on her parents without informing the school first. Carol acts super casual but it is obvious that she is unnerved. She sends Ms Devine on her way and scolds Peter for drawing something that could get his parents into trouble.

Peter begins talking to the voice in the walls and learns that her name is Sarah and that she is her sister. She feels sorry for Peter for having to live with their evil parents.

At school, the kids are busy carvinh pumpkins and Ms Devine makes it obvious that Peter is her favorite student. This pisses off Peter's bully, Brian, who smashes the pumpkin.

A complaint is made and Brian is told by his parents to give Peter a new pumpkin. But Peter has Sarah to give him advice now and she wants Peter to punish his bullies.

And so while Brian is walking down the corridor with a friend, Peter pushes him down the stairs. Brian breaks a leg while Peter dumbly watches.

Of cours Peter is expelled and his parents get super mad at him. They lock him in the basement and even chain him. Peter finds a pit covered with a grate.

Ms Devine comes in again but is turned away, after she is assured Peter will be homeschooled.

Peter is finally let out of the basement and Sarah manages to turn him completely against Mark and Carol by revealing that she was the girl that disappeared on Halloween night and that her parents didnt like her. A girl had come while Mark and Carol were trying to hurt her. The girl was killed by their parents as well.

Peter, who was always looking for someone to be on his side, easily believes a person he hasn't even met.

He begins to have nightmares about his parents being the mosnters. Carol hugs him when he waks up from his nightmare but he doesn't care for her comfort anymore.

Peter tries to call Ms Devine for help after being told by Sarah that their parents intend to imprison him too. But before the call can connect, Carol comes up behind him.

Ms Devine calls back and Carol tells her that Peter was missing his teacher but he's too shy to come on the phone now.

Ms Devine does not completely fall for that lie.

Peter decides that what Sarah must be saying is true and that he must protect himself from the same fate.

COBWEB Ending Explained

Carol, Mark, and Peter are having soup. While the parents are busy slurping away the soup, Peter is simply stirring it.

After some time, Mark asks Carol whether she has changed the recipe. Carol says no but they both keep taking in several spoonfuls to figure out what is different with the soup.

Mark finally zeroes in on the flavor. It tastes too...cinnamon-y.

He immediately grabs Peter and demands to know what he did. The kid doesn't say anything. Mark orders Carol to call for emergency. But before they can, Mark's insides start to implode and he vomits black blood.

Peter finally starts to run after seeing Mark die in front of him. Carol's reaction is slower and she grabs a knife when she realizes who has been brainwashing Peter. She begs him to not let her out.

Right before when she had seen a hole in Peter's bedroom wall, she could have told him the truth about Sarah, but nope.

Even now, Carol crawls towards Peter with a knife, not to hurt him but to try to get to Sarah. Peter, being Peter, doesn't help his dying mother.

Carol falls off the stairs.

Peter gets Sarah out who reveals she had a masterplan to get rid of the parents and she is actually evil.

In case there hasn't been a big enough body count, Brian and his brothers also come over to get revenge on Peter.

While Sarah reveals she has resented Peter for having a comfortable life while she was left to live behind the walls, she also wants to kill people mindlessly.

Sarah gets rid of the bullies immediately so she can focus on Peter.

It is Ms Devine's turn to show up and no, she doesn't get killed for being nosey.

Sarah knocks her out but she gets up at the right moment to help Peter lock Sarah in the pit once more.

Time passes and Peter is now adopted by possibly Ms Devine. Him poisoning his parents have led to no consequences.

Peter wakes up in the middle of the night by a voice.

It is Sarah and she has returned.

The movie ends.

Cobweb could have been a truly frightening movie but it ends up being a frustrating family drama where the loose ends are never tied up.
